Be it known that I, J Essa CONWAY, a citi` zen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the Stare of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed- Bags, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved feedbag for feeding horses while harnessed to a vehicle.

The object of my invention is to provide a bag or receptacle with such means for its support in frnt of the animal as will leave the latters head perfectly free for movement.

The construction of the improved feed-bag whereby the desired result is accomplished will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate what is deemed the best means of carrying the invention into effect.

Figure l is a side view showing the feedbag supported in front of an animal. Fig. 2 is a top view of the feed-bag open, with its cover turned to the position it takes when assisting to support the bag. Figs. 5 and 6 are views of parts of the swivel which connects the cover and bag.

The letter A designates the feed bag or receptacle, which may be made of any suitable material. About the top rim of this bag or receptacle is secured a metal rod the two ends b of which are near together and project laterally. Vhen the receptacle consists of textile material or leather, the rod,in the form of a hoop,may be secured thereto by turning the top edge of the material over the hoop and stitching it. The cover C must have a shape to conform to the receptacle. In the present instance it is circular. About the rim of the cover another rod is secured, substantiallylike that on the receptacle. The two ends d of this rod also project laterally. Aswivel-connection whereby the cover is attached to the receptacle consists of two disks, c and e', piv- The disks each have a dat face, f, which are incontact, and a central hole, g, for a rivet, g', which pivots them together. Each disk also has on its flat face two grooves,

The grooves of the lower disk, e, are occupied by the projecting ends b of the rod on the receptacle, and those of the upper disk, e', by the ends d of 55 the rod on the cover. The rods may be secured in the grooves by any suitable means. The two disks having the ends of the rods in them are then riveted together. By this swivelconnection the cover turns on its pivot g in a 6o horizontal plane,as shown. The two rods near together are exposed between Vthe disks and the receptacle and cover, and vsaid exposed parts constitute a sort of shank. The upper disk, e', has another groove, 7c, extending in 65 a direction crosswisc of the diverging grooves, and a wire loop,Z, has its ends in this groove, and is free to turn. This wire loop is bent to form the angles n, (see Fig. 4,) and serves as a fastener to keep the cover in the position'it 7o must have (see Eig. 2) when assisting as a bracerto support the bag. Then the cover is in this position, the loop l is directly above the exposed ends or shanks b of the rod on the receptacle, and the loop may then be pressed 7 5 down, so 'as to embrace the said shanks by bringing the angles u on opposite sides ofthe p Shanks. Thus placed the loop acts as a fastener to make the brace rigid and prevents the cover from turning. Two straps, p, are se- So cured to the cover on the side opposite the swivel, and serve to attach the cover to the horse-collar,asshowninFig.l. W'henthecover is thus attached to the collar, and the swivel is made rigid by the loop-fastener, the cover 8 5 will serve as a brace to project the feed bag or receptacle A in front ofthe animals breast, as in Fig. l. or another cord, s, may be attached to the cord q, and said cord s engaged on the checkrein hook t. Either place of engaging the hanger-cord will serve the purpose o1' suspendg5 ing the bag or receptacle, and leave the animals head perfectly' free to move, and consequently free to eat comfortably. The cover is provided with straps a, and the bag with buckles e, whereby to secure the cover when 10o the bag is full.

It, deep enough to receive l I have referred to the feed-bag as a bag or receptacle.77 By this I mean that a bag in the strict meaning of the terni is not essential. A box with rigid sides may be employed and, likewise, a rigid cover.

Instead of the two straps p on the cover a hook or clamp may be used to attach the cover to the collar.

Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. The combination, with the feed-bag and cover, each having a rod with two ends pro jecting laterally, of two disks centrally pivoted together, each having a fiat face, f, one in contact with the other, and both flat faces provided with two grooves, 7i, which are occupied by the said laterally-projecting rod ends, as set forth. A feed-bag having secured to its top rim a rod whose two ends, b, are brought near together, project laterally, and are attached to a disk, e, a cover having a rod with two laterally-projecting ends, d, attached to a second disk, e, a pivot, g', connecting the said two disks, whereby the cover may turn in a horizontal plane, and a loop-fastening device attached to the upper or cover disk, e', and having two angles, n, which mayv embrace the projecting rod ends b of the bag, the parts being combined as set forth.

A feed-bag provided with a hanger-cord for engagement back. of the haines, and having secured to its top rim a rod whose two ends, b, are brought near together, project laterally, and are attached to a disk, e, a cover provided with straps for attachment to the harness-collar, and having a rod with two laterally-projecting ends, d, attached to asecond disk, e, a pivot, g, connecting the said two disks, whereby the cover may turn in a horizontal plane, and aloop-fastening device attached to the upper or cover disk, e', and hav` ing two angles, n, which may embrace the projecting rod ends b of the bag, the parts being combined as set forth.
