SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,730, dated March 31, 1885.

' Signed to cheapen the manufacture of the same by doing away with the operation heretofore practiced of swaging and upsetting various portions of the same, and at the same4 time to produce not only an equally good article, but
i also to enable hand-made plates to be produced rapidly and of an equal quality with machine-made plates, thereby putting in the power of black-smiths and other similar wagonn'lanufacturers economically to make and apply bolsterplates to wagons of their manufacture.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use nly invention, I will now describe it by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures l, 2, and 3 are views ofthe various parts of my improved plates. Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively longitudinal and transverse sections ofthe same when puttogether. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional View showing the lower plate itted` on the bolster.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each.
The upper and lower plates, c b, are preferably formed by rolling, with beads or auges a b' along their edges on one side, so as-to adapt theln to be fitted to the'bolsters. Holes c2 b2 are then `punched through the plates'at the middle for the passage of the kingbolt.
In the hole bl of the lower plate I insert a short tube or sleeve. c, the lower end of which is provided with a flange, c', or is flared out, or otherwise made with an enlargement or bead upon the outside, the purpose of which is to-secure it firmly in place between the lower bolster and the plate b when the latter is fastened onto the' bolster. Il' desired, the top of the bolster may be recessed to receive the flanged end of the tube c. The tube c is of sufficient length to extend through the upper plate, a, and it is designed not only to afford support to the kingbolt, but also to take the strain of the upper plate, a, oft' of the king-bolt. The plates a b are provided with holes a3 b3 for the attachment-screws, in the usual way. The tube c may, if desired` be detaehable from the plate b and sold separately as an article of merchandise, so that any person can purchase it and apply it to ordinary flat iron bolster-plates, thereby gaining all the advantages of machine-made swaged'plates.
By my invention I effect a large saving in manufacture and avoid all danger of straining the metal, to which bolsterplates having upset and swaged portions are exposed.
vVVh-at I claim as lily invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
-l. The combination of the bolster-plates a b, the bolster d, and. flanged tube c, the flange of which is secured between plate b and bolster d, substantially as and for the purposes specilied.
2. The combination of the bolster-plates a b, havingflanges a' b, the bolster d, and the flanged tube c, extending through the plates, and the flange of which is supported by the bolster, substantially as and for the purposes specitied.
