INVENTOR. CAYETANO AGUAS 7% ATTORNEY United States Patent" 3,147,097 ENGINE EXHAUST CLEANER AND MUFFLER Cayetano Aguas, 1425 Hillcrest Ave., Pasadena, Calif. Filed Apr. 9, 1962, Ser. No. 185,908 2 Claims. (Cl. 55-276) This invention relates to an engine exhaust cleaner and mufller, and an object of my invention is to provide a device through which exhaust gases and oil fumes of an internal combustion engine pass forv the purpose of removing certain liquids, solids, and gases from the engine exhaust, so that the accumulated exhaust gases in the atmosphere will 'be less injurious to animal and plant life.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel exhaust cleaner and muifier which is incorporated in the exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine, so that all of the exhaust gases from the engine pass through the cleaner and through various filters and dispersing devices so that various solids, gases, and hydrocarbon liquids will be removed from the exhaust gas before that gas passes into the atmosphere.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel exhaust cleaner and mufiler of the character stated, which can be mounted back of the mufller of the internal combustion engine so that all of the exhaust gases will flow therethrough; said exhaust gases being compelled to pass through a filter medium, as well as a gravel and Wire screen disperser before the gases can pass into the atmosphere.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a novel exhaust cleaner and mufiler which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and effective in operation.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claims.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of my engine exhaust cleaner and mufller.
FIGURE 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 2-2 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 4 is a bottom plan view of my engine exhaust cleaner and muflier.
FIGURE 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 5-5 of FIGURE 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates an elongated housing formed of a suitable impervious metal. One end of this housing is inclosed by a cover 2 which is fixedly secured to the end of the housing by crimping, welding, or other suitable means. An exhaust pipe 3 extends through the cover 2 and thence longitudinally into the housing 1. A plurality of outlet holes 4 are formed in the side of the pipe 3 and these holes permit exhaust gases, fumes, and the like, to pass out of the pipe and into the housing 1, as will be subsequently described. The inner end of the pipe 3 is sealed or closed, as shown at 5, so that all of the gases must pass out of the side of the pipe 3 and throughout its length within the housing 1. A pair of pipes 6 and 7 extend into the pipe 3 on the outside of the housing 1, and one of these pipes may extend from the crankcase of the engine to conduct oil fumes to the cleaner, and the other pipe may be used to flow water through the housing 1 for the purpose of removing accumulated solids within the housing from time to time. An exhaust hole 8 is provided adjacent one end of the housing 1, and exhaust gases flow through this hole after traversing the various cleaning units, as will be subsequently described. A cap 9 closes the end of the housing 1 opposite the The sleeve 10 is formed of wire mesh or woven metal and is sufiiciently rigid to be self-supporting. At, one end of the housing 1 a packing 11 is provided of considerable thickness, and likewise a second packing 12 is provided at the other end of the housing. The sleeve 10 butts against bothpackings 11 and- 12, and when the cleaner is assembled the packings 11 and 12 will be compressed against the ends of the sleeve 10, thus sealing both ends of the sleeve. A lining 13, formed of Fiberglas, is fitted within the sleeve 10 and extends the entire length of this sleeve. This lining is loosely woven so that the exhaust gases can readily pass therethrough, but will be filtered by the action of the Fiberglas to remove solids and certain liquids from the exhaust gases.
Asecond sleeve 14, also formed of wire mesh or woven metal, is spaced inwardly from the sleeve 10, and is also spaced from the pipe 3 to provide a clear space 15 around the pipe 3 into which exhaust gases can freely pass unimpeded and unrestricted. On the outside of the sleeve 14 I provide a lining 16, which is also formed of Fiberglas and extends the entire length of this sleeve. The Fiberglas lining 16 is also loosely woven so as to permit exhaust gases to pass therethrough, but to also act as a filter to entrap entrained solids and liquids in the exhaust gas. The space 17 between the sleeves 10 and 14 is filled with washed gravel and coconut charcoal, as indicated at 18, to thus provide a filter strip running the entire length of the housing 1, and which will effectively entrap solids and liquids which might be entrained in the exhaust gas.
The exhaust gases, when moving out of the holes 4 in the pipe 3, can pass into the open space 15 and thence will be filtered through the lining 16, the gravel bed 18, and finally the Fiberglas lining 13 before passing out to the atmosphere through the hole 8. My exhaust cleaner will thus not only remove all noxious solids and liquids from the exhaust gas, but will also act as a mufiler since the sleeves 10 and 14, as well as the linings 13 and 16, and the gravel bed 18, will act as bafile or mufiling elements.
