BOTTLE STOPPER.

WITNESSES: WENTOR: 5j AJMW BY M I ATTORNEYS.
V UNITED STATES PATENT Orrtcn.
CHARLES L. MOREHOUSE, OF BROOKLYN, NEWV YORK.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,703, dated March 31, 1885. Application filed August 1, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. MORE- HOUSE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bottle-Stopper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved bottle-stopper which is simple in construction, effective, and can be opened and closed very readily.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side view of my improved bottle-stopper. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4: is a sectional plan view on the linexx, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the neck of a bottle with my stopper applied and in a posilion it occupies preparatory to closing the bottle-mouth.
A metal plate, A, is provided with two downwardly projecting arms, B, the lower ends of which are pivoted eccentricall y to links G, that are in turn pivoted eccentrically to a spring collar or band, D, clamped on the neck of a bottle, E, directly below the head F.
The links 0 are provided, with laterallyprojecting flanges or wings G at the back edges, the flanges being inclined slightly to the line uniting the pivots by which thelinks are pivoted to the band D and the arms B.
On the center of the under side of the plate A a conical projection, H, is formed, which is forced into an aperture in the top of a rubber plug, J, adapted to fit on the head of the bottle, and preferably having its edges beveled. A handle-knob, K, to facilitate manipulating the stopper, is formed on the plate A, but can be dispensed with, if desired. The
plate A may be made integral with the parts K and H, or said parts may be secured thereto by screws or other suitable means.
The
ring or band D is punched outward to form a socket, L, for receiving the inner head of the pivot M, and the links 0 are punched out at O to receive the raised parts of the band or ring D. The arms B are pivoted to the links 0 in a like manner by pivots M.
When the bottle is closed the rubber plug J is pressed firmly on the head of the bottle, and the side edges of the arms B rest against the inner edges of the flanges G.
To open the bottle, the thumbs are pressed against the flanges G, and the lower ends of the arms B are swung outward and upward, the links 0 turning on the pivots by which they are pivoted to the band or ring D. Thereby the plate A and the plug J on the same are raised.
To close the bottle, the hand is placed on the plate A, and by means of two fingers the lower ends of the arms 13 are swung downward toward and against the flanges In case the plug J is worn off or is defective in any other way it can easily be replaced by another. l
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent- 1. In a bottle-stopper, the combination, with the plate A, having arms B, of the band or ring D and the links 0, pivoted eccentrically to the band or ring D and to the arms B, and provided with the flanges or wings G, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the ring D and links 0, each having parts pressed out to form sockets, of the plate A, provided with arms B, having parts pressed out to form sockets, and of the pivots M M, passing through the socketed parts of the ring, links, and arms, substantially as set forth.
3. In a bottle-stopper, the combination, with the ring or band D, of the links 0, the plate A, having arms B, and of the head or button K on the plate, substantially as herein shown and described.
CHARLES L. MOREHOUSE.
