The wheel H is an endless self-laying track for the drive-\vheel E to run on, and at the same time supports the rear end of the carriage-bed, while the frame F, with the drivewheel E and friction-rollers 1, serves as a hub to said main wheel or tread H in its revolu tion round the axle B. The motion of each wheel H is independent, though on level or unobstructed ground they will move regularly together.
The steering device consists of a turning post or stem, 0, passing through a bolster mounted on the forward axle, O, and having on the lower end of said turning-post a double pulley, 0, contained in a pivoted block, round which pulley pass two wire cables, 0, the ends of which are secured to the semicircular hubs of the guide or forward wheels. These guidewheels P consist of a solid rim, 1), connected with an inner rim, 1), by arms or spokes 19 This is all of these wheels which revolve. Their attachment to the axle C is as follows: The inner rim, 1), is provided with a semicircular hub, R, round which the wheel P revolves. From this semicircular hub rises a stem, 1%,which passes through a vertical opening in the end of the axle (l, allowing the axle to rise and fall on the stem in the upper open half-space of the inner rim,p. At the top of the stem R is a pin, 1', extending up to and into a chuck or rider, 8, which clasps the sides of the inner rim, 1), and holds the wheel steady at the top. Thus the axle G has a vertical motion on the stem It, and as it rests on the pivoted block V, which carries the double pulley 0, it has also an oscillating motion on this block V, regulated and controlled by the guides S and the bolsterTand braces 25. The
axle O has on each side, near the wheels, guide ways S, arranged to receive between them guides S, attached to the carriage-bed,which, with its vertical motion on the stem R, allow the axle to rise and fall when crossing inequalities of the ground. A slotted bolster, T, rests on the center of the axle, and is supported at l its ends by braces t, attached to the carriage bed in front and rear of the axle, and these braces also serve to connect the axle O with the carriage-bed. An elongated slot, to, in the bolster permits the passage of the tu rning'post O, which also passes through the axle and into the pulley, and has at top a wheel or equivalent means for turning. Each wire cable 0 is connected at one end to the inside of the front of one of the semicircular hubs of a wheel, P, then passes round one of the sheaves of the double pulley O, at the foot of the stem 0, and back to the rear of the hub, where it is secured.
It is obvious that turning the stem 0 to right or left will change the direction of both guide-wheels 1? simultaneously.
It is designed to employ lifting-springs on the main wheels of my engine-such as are made the subjectmatter of another application for patent by me now pending.
