Description

N, PETERS, PHOTO-L THOGRAPHER WADHINGTGN D C UNITED `STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I. J. SAUNDERS, 0F SPABTA, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GUANO-SPREADERS.
Specitication forming part' of Letters Patent No. 3l,409, dated February 12, 1861,
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRVIN J. SAUNDERS, of Sparta, in thecountyot' Hancock and State of Georgia, have invented a new and usef'ul Improvement in Guano-Spreaders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a t'ull, clear,
and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is avertical longitudinal section of the machine through the plane indicated by the red line c in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view otl the same.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in b oth figures.
This invention consists in the combination ot two hoppers, a discharge governor or slide, and a cam-wheel and its driving-pulley, with an ordinary wheelbarrow-frame, the same con stituting a very simple and etcient apparatus for spreading guano and other pulverized fertilizers by hand,
Io enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, having reference to the drawings.
I use the ordinary wheelbarrow, which consists ot' the wheel w, its shaft s', the handles h, cross-barsf and g, and the standard n, with their circular braces or supports y.
The primary hopper A is suspended in the rectangular space between the handle IL and the cross-bars f and g, and is nailed to the former. Its sides converge toward the bottom andthe secondary or vibrating hopper B incloses its mouth and is pivoted to it eccentrically to itself, so that its gravity shall cause its front side to rest against the cam-wheel c. Said hopper B is provided with a sort of flat tube, a', which projects obliquely from the rear side and extends across its full width, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, so that the slide s, with which the said tube a is provided, shall entirely close the mouth or discharge of the hoppers when necessary by sliding it clear in, and the quantity spread may be increased or diminished, as desired, by withdrawing the slide s' or shoving it in, and the adjustment in either case -is preserved by the key e', (seen in Fig. 1,) which passes through the tube and one of the several oritces in the slide s. The shaft of the camwheel c and the pulley a is hung in the standard afextendng from side to side in front ot' the hoppers,'as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. by the band b fiom the pulley d, which is rigidly fixed to the axle s of the driving-wheel 1U. This spreading apparatus may be applied to any ordinary wheelbarrow by suspending thehopper between the handles h and nailing it to them, boring a hole in both standards n to receive the journals of the shaft ofthe pulley a and the cam c, and affixing a pulley, d, to the shaft s' ot' the wheel.
The hopper A is filled with guano, the slide s withdrawn so as to spread the desired quantity, where it is secured by the key e', and as the operator propels the machine the band b revolves the cam-wheel c, which produces a constant vibration ot' the hopper B and a continuous discharge ot' the fertilizer.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of two hoppers, A and B, slide s, camwheel c, an'd its driving-pulley a, with an ordinary wheelbarrow-frame, all the parts being constructed, arranged, and oper! ating in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth. y
IRVIN J. SAUNDERS.
