Pannozzo, Hollywood, Fla. (Stone Road, RR. 3, Bristol, Conn.) Filed Feb. 21, 1963, Ser. No. 260,280 4 Claims. (Cl. 81-63) This invention relates to a wrench of the type commonly known as spanner wrenches and has for its purpose the removal or replacement of the conventional pronged calks commonly employed in golf shoes or other foot wear where slippage is to be avoided.
The invention contemplates a spanner wrench having a pair of replaceable pins for engagement with the usual recesses of the base plate of a golf shoe calk and with the wrench including a ratchet and a ratchet operating handle that is fixed to the wrench and whereby the wrench may be manually actuated to remove or place the calks and with the wrench handle carrying a double end pawl for alternate engagement into the teeth of a ratchet wheel that is non-rotatable upon a head of the wrench and whereby the handle may be actuated back and forth to effectively remove or replace the calk.
Calk wrenches are relatively old in the art but have been ineffective with respect to the operating handles and frequently slips from the calks during rotative movement that results in damage to the hand of the operator.
The invention embodies a cylindrical head portion that is recessed to conform to the curvature of the base plate of a calk and with pins projecting through openings in the head to engage within the recesses of the calk plate and with the head portion being shouldered in a cylindrical manner to engage a cylindrical opening in a lower jaw of a ratchet wrench and with the shoulder being extended upwardly to a non-cylindrical boss that engages a corresponding opening in a ratchet wheel that is disposed between a lower jaw and an upper jaw of the ratchet wrench and with a stem projecting upwardly from the boss to engage an opening in the upper jaw of the wrench and with the wrench having a handle portion that is provided with a double acting pawl that is shiftable manually to engage the ratchet for rotating the calk in either direction and a ball detent for holding the pawl in either seating position and with the ratchet being covered by a semicylindrical shield whereby the hands of the operator will not engage the ratchet during the operation of the device.
Novel features of construction and operation of the device will be more clearly apparent during the course of the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein has been illustrated a preferred form of the device and wherein like characters of reference are employed to denote like parts throughout the several figures.

Referring specifically to the drawings, there has been provided a cylindrical head 5, formed of any desirable material such as aluminum. The bottom face of the head 5 is provided with a concave recess 6, curved according to the recognized curvature of the base plate of a golf shoe calk. The recess 6 communicates with a second recess 7 concentric thereto and the recess 7 communicates with ice a reduced cylindrical recess 8, the recesses 7 and 8 are adapted to engage over the prong of the calk when the head is fitted thereon. The head 5 is apertured at two opposite points vertically as indicated at 9 for receiving spanner pins 10. The pins 10 are provided with heads 11 that seat within enlarged recesses 12 formed in the top 13 of the head 5 and with the heads 11 being substantially flush with the top 13. The head 5 axially thereof and upon its top 13 is provided with a cylindrical hub 14. The hub 14 carries a preferably square boss 15 and the boss 15 terminates in an upwardly extending cylindrical stem 16 that is grooved circumferentially at its upper end to receive a Q-ring 17. The head 5, including the shoulder 14, the boss 15 and the stem 16 are preferably cast integral.
Means are provided to rotate the head 5 when the pins 9 are engaged within the apertures of the calk, comprising a ratchet wrench, illustrated as a whole by the numeral 18. The wrench 18 includes an elongated handle 19 that terminates at one end in a pair of jaws 20 and 21 that are in spaced apart relation, as clearly shown. Fitted between the jaws 20 and 21 is a ratchet wheel 22. The ratchet wheel 22 is provided with a central square opening 23, for fitment over the boss 15. The lower jaw 20 is provided with a cylindrical opening 24 for rotative engagement with the shoulder 14 and the jaw 20 overlies the top 13 and the heads 11 of the pins 9 whereby the pins are held against accidental displacement. The jaw 21 is provided with a cylindrical opening 25, for fitment over the stem 16 and in fully engaged position, the stem projects slightly above the jaw 21 for receiving the C-ring 17 and whereby the wrench is effectively maintained in operative engagement with the head 5.
The means for rotating the ratchet wheel 22, comprises a double end pawl 26, having teeth 27 at its opposite ends for alternate operative engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 22. The pawl 26 is pivotally supported between the jaws 2t) and 21 by a pivot pin 28. The apex 29 of the pawl overrides a ball detent 30, that is recessed into the handle 1? axially thereof. The ball 30 is biased outwardly by a spring 31. The handle 19 is further extended into an enlarged cylindrical hand grip 32 that is knurled upon its surface. The handle grip 32 is recessed at its outer end as shown at 33 and the opening of the recess is threaded to receive a threaded plug 34, carrying a pointed pin 35. The pin 35 functions as a tool for cleaning dirt or other matter that may be packed into the recesses of the calk. The plug 34 is also knurled to facilitate rotation thereof. It should be pointed out, that the pins 10 project slightly below the head 5 and so that the head when fitted upon the plate of the calk, permits the pins to fully seat within recesses of the calk plate. A metallic semi-circular shield 36 has detachable fitting engagement around the end portions of the jaws 20 and 21 and substantially overlies the major portion of the teeth of the ratchet wheel 22 so that the operator may hold the device in pressure engagement with the calk while operating the handle 12; in either direction so as to avoid scraping or injury of the fingers or hand. The shield 36 is spring tensioned and biased to a snug engagement with the area of the jaws 20 and 21.
In the use of the device, the assembled wrench as illustrated, is fitted over a conventional shoe calk with the plate of the calk and the prong of the calk having a snug fit into the concave recess 6 and the recesses 7 and 8 and in such position, the pins 10 will be fully engaged into the recesses of the calk. The operator then manually moves the pawl 26 to engage either end 27 with the ratchet wheel 22, such engagement depending upon the desired movement of the calk as to whether it is being inserted or removed then, the operator may press the wrench tightly against the calk, possibly holding the shoe against the body and with the other hand, operates the handle 18 for the desired rotation of the head 5.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that there has been provided a very novel form of calk wrench having relatively few and simple parts and that may be economically manufactured. The device is most effective to place and remove golf shoe calks or the like without slippage or damage to the operator. The double acting pawl permits the device to be rotated in either direction by the simple procedure of shifting the pawl 26. The device is strong, durable and most effective for the purposes indicated.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction shown, but that changes are contemplated as readily fall within the spirit of the invention as shall be determined by the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A wrench for rotating calks in golf shoes and whereby to remove and replace the calks that comprises a body portion including a cylindrical head that is apertured to removably support spanner pins that engage in recesses formed in the calks, the head having an upstanding axially arranged extension that receives a ratchet Wrench for the rotation of the head in either direction, the head upon its bottom being recessed to have a mating engagement with the calk, the ratchet wrench being detachably connected to the extension and with a jaw of the ratchet wrench seating upon heads of the pins to prevent shifting of the pins, the pins projecting below the bottom of the head.
2. A calk wrench for removing or placing calks in golf shoes that comprises a body portion that includes a cylindrical head having a fiat top, the bottom of the head being formed concave and further being axially recessed and whereby to engage and conform to the curvature of a base plate of a calk and its upstanding prong, the head also being apertured at two opposite points to removably receive pins that engage in recesses formed in the base plate of the calk, the flat top of the head having a raised cylindrical shoulder and with the shoulder being extended up wardly to form a square boss and a reduced cylindrical stem, a handle for rotating the head that comprises a ratchet wrench having a pair of spaced apart jaws, a ratchet wheel disposed between the jaws and with the wheel having a square opening for engagement with the boss, a lower jaw of the ratchet wrench being cylindrically apertured to rotatably engage the shoulder and the upper jaw of the ratchet wrench being cylindrically apertured to rotatably engage the stem, means carried by the stem at its upper end to detachably lock the ratchet wrench with respect to the body, a double end pawl supported between the jaws of the ratchet wrench for alternate engagement with the ratchet wheel whereby the head may be rotated in opposite direction and a detachable shield that has clipping engagement over the ends of the jaws and to cover the sides of the ratchet wheel.
3. The structure according to claim 2, wherein the head, the shoulder, the square extension and the stem are cast as an integral unit, the upper end of the stern projecting above the upper jaw and circumferentially grooved to receive a C-ring and whereby the ratchet wrench is detachably locked upon the body, the fiat top of the head being provided with recesses that are concentric with respect to the apertures and whereby to receive enlarged heads formed on the pins, the heads of the pins lying flush with the fiat top of the head, the said lower jaw of the ratchet wrench overlying the flat top of the head and the heads of the pins to prevent accidental displacement of the pins.
4. The structure according to claim 2, wherein the pawl is generally L-shaped and with the opposite ends of the pawl having teeth that alternately engage the ratchet wheel, the pawl intermediate its length having an apex portion that is engageable with a ball detent carried by the handle and whereby to hold the pawl in either of its operative positions.

Claims (1)

1. A WRENCH FOR ROTATING CALKS IN GOLF SHOES AND WHEREBY TO REMOVE AND REPLACE THE CALKS THAT COMPRISES A BODY PORTION INCLUDING A CYLINDRICAL HEAD THAT IS APERTURED TO REMOVABLY SUPPORT SPANNER PINS THAT ENGAGE IN RECESSES FORMED IN THE CALKS, THE HEAD HAVING AN UPSTANDING AXIALLY ARRANGED EXTENSION THAT RECEIVES A RATCHET WRENCH FOR THE ROTATION OF THE HEAD IN EITHER DIRECTION, THE HEAD UPON ITS BOTTOM BEING RECESSED TO HAVE A MATING ENGAGEMENT WITH THE CALK, THE RATCHET WRENCH BEING DETACHABLY CONNECTED TO THE EXTENSION AND WITH A JAW OF THE RATCHET WRENCH SEATING UPON HEADS OF THE PINS TO PREVENT SHIFTING OF THE PINS, THE PINS PROJECTING BELOW THE BOTTOM OF THE HEAD.
