Be it known that I, CHARLES M. HINKLE, of Davis City, in the county of Decatur and, State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Fabric-Turfing Implement, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My improvements relate to hand implements used in the manufacture of rugs and similar articles or fabrics from yarn, rags, and other materials; and the invention consists in certain features of construction having the object to regulate the depth of the looping of the material that forms the nap of the fabric, and also to provide for the more convenient operation or use of the implement, all as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a sectional side view of the implement complete. .Fig. 2 is a plan view of the block that carries the needle.- Fig. 3 is a similar View of the loop-holder block. Fig. leis a side view of the needle-block in reverse of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 isa cross-section on the line a: m, Fig. 1.

The implement consists of the block A,that carries the needle a, and the block B, that carries the loop-holder b. These blocks are a of suitable length and width, and are tap ered to a blunt point at the end receiving the needle and loop-holder, and the block A is formed with a rib or tenon, c, lengthwise upon its face, that enters a groove formed in the block B. The two blocks are connected together by means of a screw, d, that passes through a slot, e, in the block B, and enters the block A, and the sides of the slot 6 are formed with shoulders f, that are inclined longitudinally at the base, as at f, and also transversely at the sides, as it said shoulders primarily serving as a bearing for the head of the screw d, while the endwise or longitudinal inclination of said shoulders serves to limit the endwise movement of the blocks one on the other. To adjust the length of the stitch, it is only necessary to turn the screw d in or out, disposing the needle and loop-holder blocks nearer together or farther apart. The longitudinal inclination of the shoulders f also automatically carries the needle-block to the proper position for the next stitch.

, The needle a is of fiat form with a pointed end that is provided with an eye, and at its inner end it is made with slots 9 for the screws h, by which it is attached to the block A, the slots in the needle allowing it to be projected more or less. The loop-holder bis similarly attached by means of screws or pins 2', passing through the slots k in the loop-holder, so that it may be properly adjusted with reference to the needle.

In one side of the needle-block A is a groove, Z, for the passage of the filling material from the base of theimplement to the eye min its pointed end, the object of this groove being to retain the filling, and prevent its becoming tangled or twisted; and the groove is covered by a suitable plate, a, hinged or otherwise attached, so that it may be raised and lowered for insertion and removal of the filling.

In using the implement, the needle a is set so that it projects from the end of its block, more or less, according to the length of the loop desired by the operator, and the loopholder 1) will be set projecting as far from the end of the blockB as the inner end of the needle projects from the needle-block.

Both the needle and the loop-holder may be made of any suitable material, but the loopholder should have a certain amount of elasticity.

The screw d, by which the two blocks are held together, serves also to bring and hold the point of the loop-holder against the needle when the loop-holder block is drawn back.

The groove Z for the filling may be used worked without the groove Z, if preferred.

Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.
