DEVICE FOR SPACING FURNITURE FROM WALLS Filed July 11, 1962 INVENT OR ORLJN W. STOLJTl-I L ATTORNEY United States Patent V 3,137,0hil DEVICE FOR SPACING FURNETURE FROM WALLS Oriin W. touth, 54 Kilhourne Ave, Stoney Creek, Untarie, Qanada Filed July 11, 1962, Ser. No. 209,103 1 Claim. (Cl. 45-437) The present invention relates to a device for spacing furniture from walls and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
' Generally there is provided a device which may be quickly and easily attached to the leg portions of chairs and other furniture to prevent the same from coming into contact with the adjacent walls to mar the latter. The device consists simply of a flat disc apertured in its center and having an integrally formed downwardly and outwardly extending rod covered at its outer free end with a rubber tip. Means is provided for mounting the device between a furniture leg and the furniture body.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and efficient in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel device for spacing furniture from walls.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth having a minimum numcomprising a circular disc having a centrally disposed aperture 11 therein and having integrally formed therewith a downwardly and outwardly extending arm 12 upon the outer end or" which is provided a tip 13'of rubber or the like material. a
A chair leg 14 has a stud 15 centrally affixed in the upper portion thereofand having a threaded upper portion 16 extending upwardly from the upper end of the leg 14.
The piece of furniture generally indicated at 17 is conventionally provided with a cover plate 18, usually of Wood. In the plate 18 is a hole 19.
Fatented June 16, 1%64 7 An internally threaded thimble 20 is inserted in the hole 19 from above, the flange of the thimble being provided with holes 21 to receive nails 22 by which the thimble is fixed to the plate 18. The threaded portion of the thimble lying within the hole 19 receives the threaded section 16 of the stud 15, and thus the leg 14 is secured to the piece of furniture.
In operation, it will be apparent that the device may be quickly and easily attached to the furniture 17 by first removing the leg 14. This is done by disengaging the threaded portion 16 from the thimble 29 whereupon the disc 10 may be placed over the portion 16 of the stud 15 and the portion 16 again threaded into the collar 24 meantime moving the arm 12 to a position where it will engage, for example, a baseboard 25 adjacent a floor 26 thus preventing any portion of the piece of furniture 17 from coming into contact with, for example, a wall 27 whereby to mar the latter.
Preferably, on the upper face of the disc 10 are one or more barbs or spurs 361 which may be pressed from the material. These bite into the plate 18 when the leg is screwed home, and act to keep the disc from accidentally turning and the arm from slipping from its effective position'should the leg loosen a little from its normal tightly screwed-up condition.
, While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope/of the appended claim.
What is claimed is: v
In combination with a furniture piece having a cover plate provided witha hole in the lower face thereof, an internally. threaded thimble afiixed to said cover plate and extending at least partially through said hole, and a leg member having an exteriorly threaded stud centrally positioned therein and receivable in said thimble, the provision of a device for spacing said furniture piece from walls and the like comprising an apertured member receivable on said stud between said leg and saidbase plate, an arm extending outwardly from said aperturedmember, barbs on the upper face of the apertured member, and a tip of resilient material mounted on the free end of said arm.
