SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,558, dated March 10, 188,5.

My invention consists in the peculiar device for fastening handles upon ire-shovels, stove lid lifters, and similar articles, and will be readily understood from the following description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device as connecting a wooden handle to a stove-lid lifter,and Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the handle and clamp between the lugs. Y
In detaiLZ is the lifter, the shank of which is formed with a central strip or web, Z, Fig. 2, with projections formed on each side and at each end, the front ones marked 2 3, and the rear ones l 4 on each side, and the whole is made of malleable iron. The handle h has a central slot in the forward end long enough and wide enough to admit the web portion of the clamp, the upper and lower portions of the (No model.)
handle passing between the lugs l 2 3 4 on each side, as shown in the drawings, and when the handle has been pushed'on'far enough the lugs are pressed or driven down around the edges of the handle on each side, holding it firmly in place. Thus in Fig. 2 the lugs on the left-hand side are shown as driven down, the lugs on the right-hand side not yet driven down.
The lifter or a shovel or any similar implement is formed integral with the clamp, the whole forming a cheap and secure means of fastening wooden handles to various devices.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The clamp formed of malleable metal having the web Z and one or more lugs on each side, substantially as described.
2,. The clamp formed of malleable metal having-web Z and one or more lugs on each side, in combination with a wooden handle, substantially as and for the purpose described. In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand this 27th day of October, 1884.
