(Cl. 46-195) This invention relates to a toy gun and more particularly to a toy paper bursting gun of the type in which a resounding noise is produced in response to bursting a rupturable paper, preferably in feedable tape form, by directing compressed air thereagainst.
Paper breaking guns are well known in the art; however, this invention provides many improved features which overcome disadvantages of prior means and methods presently used.
' An important feature of this invention provides a mechanical advantage to the user of the gun in operating the gun to compress air. In the past, levers and triggers have been provided which are relatively short and have a very small mechanical advantage making it very difficult for the child prominent in the age level generally using this type of gun to operate the gun. The air pressure is commonly created by moving a plunger relative to a cylinder to compress air which is directed against paper tape held again an orifice. To facilitate compressing of air, many devices have been formed, such as toy guns having means for successively moving the piston to compress air in the cylinder in response to repeated movement of a lever or trigger means. Although these methods have generally given a mechanical advantage to the child, they necessarily require a greater period of time to build up the pressure.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a new and improved toy paper bursting gun which affords increased mechanical advantage to the user of the gun to more readily, quickly and efifortlessly create the necessary air pressure required to burst a rupturable paper for producing an explosive sound.
Furthermore, in the past, many of the guns feature movable orifices which are, movable relative to the body to juxtapose the rupturable paper tape to the orifice and to sandwich the paper tape between the orifice and opening of the cylinder of the gun which gives a very unrealistic appearance to the gun.
' It is therefore another object of this invention to pro vide a relatively stationary orifice and a movable cylinder, the cylinder being movable to sandwich a paper tape between the orifice and an opening of the cylinder while the orifice is fixed relative to the body to give the toy gun amore realistic appearance.
A further object of this invention is to provide a new and improved toy gun of the character described in which the orifice is pivotally mounted relative to the body to facilitate feeding of the paper tape when loading the gun and releasably locked in its firing position for rereleasably holding the orifice during the operation of bursting the paper tape.
This invention provides a new and improved toy paper bursting gun which includes a body' having a pivotable and releasably lockable orifice, an elongated lever pivotable in the-body and having an increased mechanical adpaper sandwiched between the orifice and the compression chamber opening in response to movement of the compression chamber. Another object of this invention is to provide a new and improved toy paper bursting gun which is economical to manufacture and is capable of mass production.
A general object of this invention is to provide a new and improved toy paper bursting gun of the character described which overcomes disadvantages of prior means and methods heretofore intended to accomplish generally similar purposes.
These and other objects of this invention will be more apparent from the ensuing detailed description, drawings and appended claim.

Referring in detail to the drawings, there is shown, by way of illustration, but not of limitation, a toy paper bursting gun designed and constructed in accordance with this invention and generally designated by the numeral 10. The gun 10 comprises a body 11 preferably formed of a moldable material such as plastics, metal or the like, in halves l3 and 14 cemented or otherwise secured at adjacent parting planes 16 and 17, respectively. The body 11 includes a forwardly extending simulated barrel 17 having a transverse space 18 between the barrel and a breach portion 19 of the body, for a purpose to be hereinafter described, an upwardly extending simulated cartridge magazine 21 which is also hollow in construction.

A rupturable feedable tape, designated by the numeral 23 preferably in strip form and supplied as in a roll 24, is mountable on the body 11 for movement relative thereto. A cavity 26 is formed integrally with the body 11, more specifically with one-half of the body like the body portion 13, the cavity being open to the exterior of the body half 13 and having a cover plate 27 pivotally secured to the body half 13 as at 28 with a detent as indicated at 29 for releasably holding the plate 27 in a position to cover the cavity 26. A pin 31 extends into the cavity 26 for mounting the roll 24 upon which it is rotatable with one end of the tape 23 extending over a top wall 32 of the body and downwardly through the gap 18 existing between the barrel 17 and the breach portion 19. The free end 33 of the tape 23 extends downwardly and adjacent to an orifice 34 provided in a movable orifice block 36 pivotallysecured to. the body as at 37 (see FIGURE 5). A longitudinal groove 38 is preferably formed in a shelf portion '39 of the handle 22 to guide the free end of the paper tape. A slot 41, substantially narrower than the width of the tape 23 is provided in the shelf 39 through which an end 42 of a paper advancement means generally designated by the numeral 43 may enter'to engage the underside of the paper tape free end i 33 in a manner to be hereinafter described.
A cylinder 45 is mounted in the body for axial movement relative to the longitudinal axis of the body 11, the cylinder 45 providing a compression chamber 46 in which a piston 47 secured to a piston rod 48 is movable. The cylinder 45 is fixed within a movable frame 49, the frame being movable relative to the body 11 by virtue of laterally extending tabs 51, 52 and 53 being slidably mounted between retainers formed integrally with or secured to the body such as to the body portion 13. The retainers include a downwardly extending web 56 and a laterally extending tab 57 secured to the body portion 13 and forming a space 58 between ends thereof in which the tab 51 is slidable. The tabs forming guides for guiding linear movement of the frame 49 relative to the body 11. A lower tab 53 is slidable in a notch 59 formed in a lower portion of the body portion 13 and is slidable against a flat wall portion 61 thereof. A rearward upper tab 52 is slidable in a space formed between downwardly extending tab 62 and an inwardly laterally extending tab similar to the tab 57 to guide the tab 52 in its linear sliding movement. The cylinder 45 includes a reduced opening 63 at the forward end thereof in which a grommet-like insert 64, of rubber, neoprene or the like, is disposed to provide an opening 66 having alongitudinal axis substantially coincident with the axis of the orifice 34. A transverse Wall 67 is formed at an intermediate portion of the frame 49 and has an opening 68 extending therethrough through which the piston rod 43 extends and in which it is slidable. A compres' sion spring 69 surrounds the forward end of the piston rod 48 and has one end 71 abutting against the web 67 and another end 72 abutting the enlarged piston 47 to bias the piston 47 in a direction towards the opening 66 for abutment with the grommet 64 to cover the opening 66 when the piston 47 is free to move.
It is to be noted that the outer diameter of the piston 47 is substantially smaller than the inner diameter of the cylinder 45 so as to provide an annular space therearound to facilitate movement of the piston 47 within the cylinder 45. This makes movement of the cylinder 45 relative to the piston 47 appreciably more effortless inasmuch as there is no friction between the wall and the piston periphery.
The trailing end 73 of the piston rod 48 is conveniently supported in a lateral tab 74 integral with the frame 49 and having a slot therethrough in which the end 73 is slidable.
As best seen in FIGURES 2 and 7, a releasable holding means, generally designated by the numeral 76 is pivotally mounted as on a rock shaft 77 in the body 11 for releasably holding the piston rod 48 and piston 47 against movement relative to the body 10. The releasable holding means 76, as best seen in FIGURES 2 and 7, includes a member 78 having a downwardly extending hooked end 79 engageable in a notch 81 formed in the upper edge of the piston rod 48. The notch 81 is formed with a rearwardly declining edge 82 and a substantially vertical edge 83. The hooked end 79 is abuttable with the edge 83 to hold the piston rod against movement when the cylinder is moved in a manner to be hereinafter described. The hooked end 79 is normally biased into engagement with the notch 81 by a torque spring 84 surrounding the pin 77 and having one end 86 engaging the frame 49 and its opposite end 87 engaging an upturned tab 88- of the member 78. A transverse pin 89 extends outwardly of the hooked end 79 of the member 78 to act as a cam follower for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
An elongated lever, generally designated by the numeral 90 is pivotally mounted in the body 11 for pivotal movement to selectively, and in one stroke, move the cylinder 45 and its compression chamber 46 to a position to juxtapose its opening 66 to the orifice 34 and sandwich the free end 33 of the tape 32 therebetween, and, at the end of its travel, release the releasable holding means 76 so as to release the piston rod 48 to release the piston 47 to be biased by the spring 69, which has meanwhile been compressed, to move towards the opening 66 and, by
virtue of its rapid movement under the influence of the spring 69, compress air in the compression chamber 46. The compressed air is relieved through the opening 66 and is forced against the paper tape end 33, thereby bursting the paper in the region sandwiched between the orifice 34 and the opening 66 to produce a resounding explosive sound.
The lever is pivotally secured in the upper region of the body 21, more specifically Within the upper simulated cartridge portion 2 1, as at 91. The lever extends through the body and has a free end 92 depending therefrom serving as a second handle for manually operating the lever. A cam surface 93 is provided at an intermediate portion of the lever 90 and is positioned so as to engage the pin or cam follower 89 of the releasable holding means 76 and cam it upwardly at the end of the travel of the pivotal movement of the lever 90 to disengage the hook end 79 from the notch 81 of the piston rod 48, thereby releasing the piston rod as previously described to be biased by the spring to compress air within the compression chamber 46.
Motion translating means connect the lever 90 to the cylinder 45, more specifically to the frame 49 to translate the pivotal movement of the lever into a linear movement of the cylinder. The motion translating means include a link 94 pivotally secured to the lever 90 as at one end 96 thereof and at an opposite end 97 thereof to an arm 98 secured to a quadrant gear 99 pivotally secured to the body as at 101. The quadrant gear 99 has its gear teeth 102 meshed with the gear teeth 103 of a gear rack 104 secured to the frame at 49. Therefore, as will now be more clearly understood by the foregoing description, as the lever 90 is manually pivoted to bring the cam 93 into engagement with the pin 89, the pivotal movement of the lever 90 is translated into a linear movement of the frame 49 and thereby the cylinder 45, through the link 94 and the arm 98 to pivot the quadrant gear 99 meshed with the gear rack 104, the pivotal movement of the quadrant gear 99 being translated into a linear movement of the gear rack 104 and thereby to the frame 49. In this manner, when the cylinder 45 is bottomed against the orifice 34 to sandwich the paper tape between the orifice 34 and the opening 66, the piston rod 48 is released to allow the spring 69 to bias the piston 47 to compress air within the chamber 46 and expel the air through the opening 66 to burst the tape and produce an explosive sound.
The paper advancing means 43 is pivotally mounted on a downwardly extending tab 54 of the frame 49 as at 55 and is movable therewith. The paper advancing means 43 includes the forward end 42 which is preferably supplied with a surface 105 of material having a high coefficient of friction such as rubber, neoprene, or the like, and an opposite end 106 extending upwardly and being in abutment with the rearward end 73 of the piston rod 49. The rearward end 106 of the paper advancing means 43 is biased into engagement with the end 73 by an extension spring 107 having one end 108 secured to the end 106 and another end secured or anchored as at 109 to the body 11 to bias the end 106 upwardly. The end 106 includes an inclined face 111 whereas the end 73 of the piston rod includes a complementary inclined face 112. As the frame 49 moves forwardly to position the opening 66 adjacent to the orifice 34 in the manner previously described, the end 73, being held stationary by the releasable holding means 76 biases the end 106 of the paper advancing means 43 downwardly to pivot the end 42 upwardly and bring the surface 105 of the end 42 to extend into the slot 41 and engage the underside of the free end 33 of the paper tape 23. In response to continued forward motion of the frame 49, the surface 105 frictionally slides the tape end 33 to position a new part of the tape 23 in front of the orifice 34 before the opening 66 is juxtaposed thereto. When the piston rod is released as previously described, the end 73 breaks away from the end 106 to allow the end 106 to be biased upwardly by the spring 107 whereupon the end 42 is biased downwardly to disengage the paper so that when the cylinder 45 and frame 49 are returned in response to pivotal movement of the lever 90 in an opposite direction, the surface 105 is disengaged from the free end 33 so as not to move the tape during its return movement.
As best seen in FIGURE 5, the orifice block 36 is engaged in a notch 113 of its free end by a hook member 114 pivotable relative to the body 10, as at 116, and having its opposite end 117 biased by a spring 118, in the form of a leaf spring secured as at 119 to the side wall of the body. The spring 118 biases the end 117 outward- 1y to bias its hooked end 121 into engagement with the notch 113 to retain the block 36 in its position having the axis of the orifice 34 substantially coincident with the axes of the cylinder 45 and the opening 66. The block 36 is pivotable on its vertical axis 37 in response to disengagement of the hook 121 against the bias of the spring 118 whereby the block 36 may be pivoted away from the body in order that a paper tape like 23 may be inserted through the gap 18 so as to be juxtaposable to the orifice 34 when the block 36 is returned to the position shown in FIGURE 5.
In this manner this invention provides new and improved means for cocking a cylinder relative to its piston in the form of the lever 90 which has a much greater mechanical advantage than lever means and trigger means provided in prior means and methods heretofore intended to accomplish generally this same purpose.
In one stroke of the lever 90, which is easily accomplished by moving the free end 92 with one hand towards the handle 22 held by the other hand, the cylinder 45 is moved adjacent to the orifice 34 and the spring 69 is compressed and the paper tape is advanced, at the end of the forward travel of the lever the releasably holding means 76 is cammed to release the piston 47 to compress air in the compression chamber 46 and expel the air through the opening 66 in a sudden burst of pressure to burst the paper tape 23 sandwiched between the opening 66 and the orifice 34. In its opposite pivotal movement, the lever 99 resets the releasable holding means '76 to engage the notch 81 of the piston and the cylinder 46 into its normal position spaced from the orifice 34.
The foregoing disclosure is representative of preferred forms of the invention and is to be interpreted in an illustrative rather than a limiting sense. Various modifications and alternatives may occur to and be adopted 5 by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, which is to be accorded the full scope of the claim appended hereto.
What is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
A toy paper bursting gun comprising: a body having an orifice and a feedable rupturable paper tape justaposable to said orifice; a cylinder movable in said body and having an opening substantially coaxial with said body orifice; a piston movable relative to said cylinder and having a piston rod extending therefrom; spring means normally biasing said piston into said cylinder; releasable holding means spring biased normally to hold said piston rod against movement relative to said body; manually operable lever means pivotally mounted in said body and coactive with said releasable holding means for releasing said releasable holding means; and motion translating means for translating pivotal movement of said lever means in a forward direction into movement of said cylinder so as to position said opening of said cylinder adjacent to said orifice to sandwich said paper tape juxtaposed to said orifice therebetween, in response to a predetermined pivotal movement of said lever means in said one forward direction, said piston being released for spring bias by said spring means to bottom against said opening of said cylinder to compress air therein for bursting a paper tape sandwiched between said opening and said orifice at the end of said predetermined pivotal movement of said lever means, said releasable holding means including means defining a notch in said piston rod and a member pivotally mounted in said body and having a hooked end normally biased to engage said notch so as to hold said piston rod against movement relative to said body while said cylinder is axially moved, said releasable holding means also including a cam follower and said lever means including cam means engageable with said cam follower so as to disengage said releasable holding means from said notch at substantially the end of said pivotal movement of said lever means in said one forward direction.
