HERMON H. ORBITS AND MICHAEL WILLET, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,443, datedl March 3J 1885. Application filed August 20, 1884. (No model.)
. To all whom, it may concern.:
Be it known that we, HERMON H. ORBI'rs and MICHAEL WILLE'r, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Faucets; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in faucets, particularly designed for use in hydrants wherein the faucet is placed underground.
In devices of this class as ordinarily constructed, should the faucet get out of order, as often occurs where elastic valves are used, it has been necessary to dig down to the faucet before it could be repaired.
The object of this invention is to construct a faucet the valve of which can be readily removed for purposes of repair without the necessity of (ligging and without removing the valve-case5and to that end this invention consists in the peculiar construction of the faucet, the valve, and its stem operating through a plug tapped into the faucet-body or valvecase, such plug being adapted to be disengaged from the valve-case Without disturbing the latter; and in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and'combination of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is a sectional elevation showing adaptation of our device to a hydrant. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional elevation through the faucet.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents the valve case or shell, designed to be attached to the water-supply and discharge pipes B C, as in the ordinary manner. This valve-shell has formed in it the diaphragm D, provided with an opening, a, through which water finds a passage from the Water-main to the discharge.
Upon the upper portion of the valve-case is, formed an annular daring angc, E, into which is tapped the plug F, surmounted by a stuffing-box, G, through both of `which the valve-stem H passes, as in the ordinary construction of such devices. -The lower end of the valve-stem carries a valve, I, which finds 5o a seat upon the diaphragm, closing the opening a therein.
.I is a coupling adapted to screw upon the body of the plug F, and secured against accidental displacement by the set-screw K. This coupling J engageswith the lower end of a tubing, L, which is designed to extend to or above the surface of the ground within the usual box, M. The ordinary key-rod,N,is employed for operating the valve, and passes 6o down through the tube L and engages with the upper end of the valve-stem. A waste way or passage, b, is formed in the plug F, affording communication lbetween the discharge-pipe C and the flaring flange, and 65 through which the water remaining in the discharge-pipe after the valve s closed finds egress. lt will be readily seen that should the valve get out of order, by unscrewing the plug from the shell by means of the tube L, it can 7o easily be withdrawn, the valve repaired, and again lowered to position, the flaring flange directing the plug so thatit will engage with the shell.
What we claim as our invention is- 1. In a faucet, the removable plug F, carrying the valve-stem H, and surmounted by the stufng-box G, in combination with the tube L, coupling J, and set-screw K, the parts being constructed and arranged substantially as 8o shown, and for the-purposes specified.
2. In combination with the valve-shell A, provided with the diaphragm D and annular daring fiange E, directly attached thereto, the removable plug F, carrying t-hevalve-stem H, 85 and surmounted by the stuffing-box G, and provided with the passage-way b,' communieating with the interior of the shell A, its discharge end terminating within the annular space between the plug F and the annular 9o flange E, substantially as shown.
