NITED STATES DANIEL MILLS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE UNITED STATES AUTOMATIC BUTTONHOLE SEWING MACHINE COMPANY,
OF NEW JERSEY.
BUTTON-HOLE SEWING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 313,358, dated March 3, 1885.
Application filed August 6, 1883. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL MILLs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Button-Hole-Sewing Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention consists of certain improvements in the construction of the button -hole sewing mechanism described and claimed in the following Letters Patent: Reissue No. 9,962, dated December 6, 1881, and No. 249,411, dated November 8, 1881, both granted to FJSimmons, and N 0. 266,044, dated October 17, 1882, granted to myself; and also in the specification forming part of an application for a patent filed by me March 5, 1883, Serial No. 87,153. My present improvements are shown in the form of an attachment which can be applied to an ordinary sewing-machine when it is desired'to do button-hole work, and may be as readily removed when it is desired to use the machine for other work.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improvements as applied to the bed of a sewing-machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the attachment ready to be applied to the bed of the machine. Fig. 3is an end view of the attachment, looking in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on the lines 1 2, Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan on the lines3 4, Figs. 1, 3, and 4.. Fig. 6 is an inverted plan view of the operatinglever detached; and Fig. 7 is an inverted plan View detached of the vibrator and its parts.
My present button-hole attachment em bodies many of the principal features of the improvements set forth in the patents and application above cited.
The base H of the attachment is in this case secured directly to any ordinary throat-plate, h, which fits in the dovetailed groove to on the bed A of the sewing-machine, Figs. 1 and 2, so that the entire attachment can be readily slipped into place or removed, as indicated in Fig. 2, a plain throat-plate being substituted when the button-hole attachment is removed and the machine is to be used for other work. a
The operative parts of the button-hole attachment receive their motion from the needle-bar B of the machine, a pin, b, on this needle-bar being adapted to an open slot in the end of a vertical bell-crank lever, D,Figs. 1 and 4, pivoted to an upright portion, d, of the base of the attachment. The vertical arm of this bell-crank D acts on the end of a horizontal lever, F, Fig. 2, pivoted at the opposite end at f, Figs. 3 and 5, to a raised lug, f, on the base H. This lever F carries on its upper side an anti-friction roller or pin, Z, Fig. 2, adapted to act on the arm Z of the friction feed-disk N, Fig. 4.. The details of the friction-feed being on the under side of the disk, have not been shown, as I propose to use the devices illustrated, described, and claimed in an application for a patent for friction-clutch filed by me June 11, 1883, Serial No. 97,716. Suffice it to say that the recip- 7o rorating motion of the needle-bar imparts an intermittent rotary feed-moton to the disk N through the medium of the levers D and F, the extent of this feed-motion being regulated by the screw-stop r passing through the fixed '7 5 pivot-block R and limiting the return-movement of the arm Z against the pull of the spring 1', Fig. 2, as in my above-mentioned inventions.
On the upper face of the disk N is formed a cam-groove, a, to which is adapted an antifriction roller, m, on a bent arm, M, pivoted at m to a lug on the base H, this arm M being connected to and acting on a lever, M, through the medium of a pin, m adjustable in slots in the arm and lever. This lever M is pivoted at m to the lugf on the base, and through the medium of the forked connecting-rod or piti'nan L, Figs. 2, 3, and 5, is connected to and controls the longitudinal motion of the slide G, which is mounted on the vibrator G, and carries the cloth-clamp K.
By means of the devices described the intermittent feed-motion first in one direction and then in the other necessary to stitch the button-hole will be imparted to the clothclamp in a manner similar to those described in the patents hereinabove referred to.
I have not deemed it necessary to describe the construction of the cloth-clamp, as any of the known forms may be used without departing from my invention.
\Vhat is termed a primary slide in the patents and applications above cited is in this case aplatc, G, mounted on a pivot, g, Figs. 3 and 5, on the base H, and having a vibrating motion on this center, instead of a reciprocating motion on guides. The devices for imparting this transverse vibrating motion to the plate G will be best understood on reference to Fig. 5. To the side of the plate is attached an arm, G", or it may be formed in one piece therewith, and to this arm are pi voted two levers, E E, connected together by a spring, 6, which normally keeps the arms up against projecting portions of the arm G in the position occupied by the arm E in Fig. 5. These arms are acted on alternately by a cam, P, which I prefer to make of the triangular form shown, and which is mounted on the pivot-block R, secured to the base H, between the two arms E E. On this cam is formed a ratchet, p, which, if the cam is triangular, will have six teeth, as shown, and into these teeth takes a springpawl, 9, secured to the under side of the vibrating lever F, Figs. 2 and 6, so that at each backward and forward movement of the latter the cam P will be turned asixth of a revolution, and one or other of the three points of the cam will strike one of the arms E and so move the vibrator G over in that direction, and on the next turn of the cam. P the other arm E or E will be struck by another point of the cam to move the vibrator G in the reverse direction.
The devices for limiting the movement of the vibrator to form the sides of the buttonhole are similar to those employed in my former inventions. In this case the usual rotary stop-cam, T, Figs. 4 and 5, is mounted on a sleeve, N, on the feed disk or cam N, the vibrator being cut out in the form of a yoke, Fig. 7, and provided with projections s s, to act in'conj unction with the said stop cain and yielding arms or levers E E in the manner fully described in the patents and application referred to. The can] T can have a limited motion on the sleeve N, being normally held in the position shown in Fig. 8 against a stop, a, on the disk N by a spring, a; but should the edge t of the cam T strike either of the projections s s the spring a will allow the cam to yield in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 8, suificiently until the camcan pass the projection, as described in an application filed by me. The projection s is adjustable, for the purpose described in my former application, the projection in this case being carried by an arm, 8 Figs. 5 and '7, pivoted to the vibrator G, and adjustable by a set-screw, a, passing through a lug on the vibrator. The motion of this vibrator G is also limited in the other direction by means of the two screws and g, passing through lugs on the base H, and coming into contact with the sides of the vibrator, Fig. 5.
Instead of employing rigid pivoted arms E E, with a spiral spring, e, it will be understood that arms which are inherently elastic or yielding may be employed without departing from my invention.
I do not wish to claim in this case the combination of the needle-bar and bell-crank lever D, with the horizontal pivoted lever F, carrying the pawl and the ratchet and cam operated thereby, or the frictiondisk N, lever Z, and pin Z, as these features form the subject of a separate application for a patent filed by me April 5, 1884, Serial No. 126,756; but
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the vibrator and slide of a button-hole-sewing mechanism and clothclamp carried thereby with a cam, N, levers M M, and rod L, connecting the lever M with the slide, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the vibrator and slide of a button-hole-sewing mechanism and clothclamp with spring-arms E E, carried by the vibrator, and a cam adapted to act on said arms alternately, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the base of a buttonholesewing mechanism, a slide carrying a clotlrclamp, and a plate or vibrator, G, pivoted to the base, with a rotary stop-cam. springarms E E, carried by the plate G, and a cam adapted to act alternately on said arms.
4. The combination ofthebase-plate and rotating stop'cam ofa button-hole-sewing mechanism with vibrator and slide and cloth-clamp carried thereby, the said vibrator having a projection, s, and an adjustable pivoted lever, s", substantially as specified.
5. The combination of the vibrator and slide of a button-hole-sewing mechanism and clothclamp carried thereby with spring-arms E E, carried by said vibrator, a triangular cam, P, to act on said arms, and devices, substantially as set forth, for imparting an intermittent rotary motion to the cam.
6. The combination of the vibrator and slide of a button-holesewing mechanism and clothclamp carried thereby with arms E E, pivoted to the vibrator, a connecting-spring, e, and a cam to act on said arms alternately, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination of the vibrator and slide of a button-hole-scwing mechanism and clothclamp carried thereby, the said vibrator having projections s s, with a rotary disk and sleeve, N, carrying a cam, T, having a limited motion thereon under the pull of a spring, a, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DANL. MILLS.
