AMUSEMENT DEVICE SIMULATING A DAGGER PROJECTING FROM A POOL OF BLOOD Filed Jan. 12, 1961 "F1514- fl} 27 l 30 I25 24 2%} 3/ INV EN TOR.
fieamv /ur United States Patent 3,132,859 All/IUSEIVHENT DEVICE SIMULATING A DAGGER PROJECTING FROM A POOL OF BLOOD Harold N. Braunhut, 1812 Atlantic Ave., Brooklyn 33, NY. Filed Jan. 12, 1961, Ser. No. 82,334 7 Claims. (Cl. 272-8) This invention relates generally to amusement devices and particularly to a novelty dagger.
It is an object of this invention to provide an amusement device which simulates a dagger or knife buried within the body of a person and associated with a quantity of blood flowing therefrom, and which may be used at parties, social gatherings and the like as an object of humor.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a device of the character indicated which has improved means for securing it to the clothing of a person upon which the device may be disposed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character indicated which may be easily assembled in its intended form.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a device of the character indicated which is adapted for supporting a comic sign or writing associated therewith.
Yet a further object of the invention is to provide a lightweight amusement device simulating a dagger projecting from a pool of blood, which dagger may be easily assembled and disassembled, as desired, and which is of economical design'and manufacture. A
Other and further objects of the present invention will become apparent from the following description as read in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a bottom view of one member employed in the said embodiment of the invention;
FIGURE 3 is a cross-sectional view taken about the line 3-3 of FIGURE 1 and showing the various parts of said embodiment of the invention in-exploded position;
FIGURE 4 is a cross-sectional view taken about the line 44 of FIGURE 1 and showing the various parts of said embodiment of the invention in an exploded position; and
FIGURE 5 is a bottom view of that portion of said embodiment of the invention which comprises the simulated knife or dagger blade employed therein.
As shown in the drawing, one embodiment of the invention comprises a simulated dagger projecting from a pool of blood. Thus, as may be seen in FIGURE 1 of the drawing, the said device is provided with a base generally designated by the numeral and simulating a pool of blood flowing in a plurality of streams 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15. This base is preferably composed of a molded plastic material and colored red in simulation of blood. The bottom of the base is depicted in FIGURE 2 and illustrates the means for securing the presently described form of the invention in its intended position, as for example, upon the clothing of a person. Thus, as shown in FIGURE 2, the base 10 is provided with a depressed portion 16. This depressed portion 16 serves as a seat for a pin generally designated by the numeral 17 and including an arcuate element 18 and a tapered element 19, the latter terminating at a suitable point 20 which may be inserted within the clothing of the wearer. The depressed portion 16 is also provided with a plurality of abutments 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25. These abutments are rectangular in form and serve to define the position of the pin 17, the said arcuate element 18 thereof being disposed in contact with the sides of said abutments, one end 26 of said arcuate element also being contactable with the abutment 20 so as to prevent rotational movement thereof with respect to the base 10. Said base 10 is also provided with an elongated aperture 27 formed so as to slidably engage the external surface of a simulated blade 28, preferably composed of a plastic material, the said simulated blade being depicted in FIGURES 3 and 4. This blade is provided with an inclined cross-piece 29 which is seatable in con tact with oppositely disposed abutments 30 and 31 provided in the aforesaid depressed area 16 of the base 10. The said inclined cross-piece 29 is also formed with a pair of notches 32'which cover opposite portions of the armate element 18, thereby confining said pin 17 to the base 1.0. The cross-piece 29 is formed integrally with the blade 28. The latter is preferably colored in simulation of steel and is provided with an indentation 33, such as is commonly employed upon knife blades or daggers, for the purpose of facilitating the entry thereof when thrust into their intended object. The simulated blade 28 is provided with a tang formed with a pair of extensions 34a which define a curved notch 35. The simulated blade 28 is also provided at the opposite edges thereof with longitudinal extensions 36 and 37.
When assembled, the blade 28 is disposed through and in frictional engagement with the aperture 27 and the cross-piece 29 contacts the abutments 3i) and 31 as well as the surface of the depressed area 16. The tang and longitudinal extensions 36 and 37 are received within a handle generally designated by the numeral 38 andpref erably composed of a molded plastic material. The handle is preferably formed in two parts, 38a and 3817, which may be cemented together for final assembly, as desired, thereby forming a hollow member including a cross guard 40 and transverse connecting members 41 and 42. The slot 35, when disposed within the handle 38, is snapped upon the transverse member 41 at the same time the longitudinal extensions frictionally engage the inner periphery of the wall of the handle and the upper edge 28a of the simulated blade 28 abuts against the said cross guard 40, thereby disposing the said simulated blade securely within the handle 38, the extensions 34a also abutting against a pair of shoulders 41a provided on'the transverse member 41. The said upper edge 28a forms a shoulder from which said tang and longitudinal extensions 36 and 37 project, said tang and members 36 and 37 being thinner than said simulated blade 28.
It will be noted that the transverse member 41 and transverse member 42, as well as the remainder of the mating elements of the handle, may be cemented together by a suitable plastic cement. The handle is preferably provided With an opaque dark color such as black, but may be provided with any other color as desired. It will be seen that the transverse members 41 and 42 serve as convenient means for maintaining the handle as well as the knife blade in securely assembled position. The handle 38 may also be provided with a boss or button generally designated 43 and having a bulbous end 44 and a shank 45 formed integrally with said handle 38. The button 43 is adapted for suspending a comic sign (not shown) bearing any desired wording with reference to the particular situation in which the above-described device is used, the suspending members, such as a suitable wire or string being disposed upon the shank 45.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the device is easily assembled, that due to its light weight it may easily be supported by the pin 17 upon the clothing of a person who desires to wear it for comic eflects and that prior to its final assembly, by reason of the flat conformation of its various members, as well as the split arrangements of the handle 38, it is easily stored and transported in boxes or other containers of little bulk. Moreover, the longitudinal extensions 36 and 37, as well as the tang, disposed within the handle 38, insure that the assembled form ofthe invention is maintained in a firm condition.
It will also be seen that the pin 1'? is advantageously secured to the base by the cross-piece 29 soas to insure against accidental loss of said pin 17. Moreover, the device may easily be disassembled if desiredby unsnapping the tang from the transverse member 41, removing the simulated blade 28 from the handle and from the base 10.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated and de scribed hereinafter has been selected for the purpose of clearly setting forth the principles involved. It will be apparent, however, that the present invention is susceptible to being modified in respect to details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which may be resorted to without departure from the. spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
