NITED STATES Patient rrrnn.
HENRY OOCHRANE AND JOSEPH MICHAEL DAY, OF DUBLIN, IRELAND.
BOTTLE AND STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,059, dated March 3, 1885.
' Application filed Sept-emher12,184. (No model.) Patented in England June 3, 1894, No. 8.519, and June 30, 1884, No. 9,566.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY COOHRANE, of Nassau Place, Dublin, Ireland, mineralwater manufacturer, and JOSEPH MICHAEL DAY, of Merrion Square, Dublin, Ireland, barrister at law, both citizens of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles and Stoppers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to bottles which are closed by a glass ball or disk being pressed by the action of the gas contained within the bottle against a ring of iudia-rubber or other suitable material at the mouth of the bottle, and is especially designed, first, to permit such bottles to be opened by releasing the gas in an easy and effectual manner; second, to obviate the necessity of forcing the stoppers into the bottles, and, third, to reduce to a minimum the risk of bottles bursting while being opened. These objects we attain in the following manner, which will be readily un derstood by reference to the figures in the accompanying drawings, in whicl1- Figure 1 is an elevation, and represents a complete bottle made according to our invention, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of same. Figs. 3 aud et show elevation and section of the cap or top removed from the neck of the bottle.
In themanufacture ot the bottle, Figs. 1 to 4, a screw-thread is formed on the outside of its nozzle or neck, as shown at a a, Fig. 2. Apart from the bottle is made a cap (seen in Figs. 3 and 4) the interior of which is threaded for the purpose of screwing down on the When thus screwed down, the cap forms,in fact, the mouth or lip of the bottle. A11 internal shoulder, b,
is provided in the cap, to receive a washer, c, of indie-rubber or other suitable material, against which the glass ball, disk, or other stopper, cl,impinges. The cap is provided with an aperture, e, in its side, so placed that when the cap is screwed down 011 the neck of the bottle the said aperture will be below its rim,
as seen in Fig. 1; or, in lieu of this aperture, a vertical slot may be formed in the thread on the neck of the bottle, or on the thread on the interior of the cap, or on both.
The action of our invention may be briefly described thus When the bottle is about being filled, the cap is screwed into position,
the glass ball or stopper having been first,
open the bottle, it is held upright and the cap is screwed round until the joint between the rubber and the bottle is opened and the aperturee, or the slot in the screw of the cap or on the nozzle of the bottle, as the case may be, comes above the rim of the bottle, when the gas will immediately escape and the glass ball fall away from the rubber collar or washer, thereby enabling the contents to be poured out with ease.
Having thus described the invention, what we desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is i 1.. A bottle having an external screw-thread upon its neck and a plane upper surface, combined with a cap having an internal thread and a shoulder, a rubber ring clamped in place between said plane surface and shoulder by the act of placing the cap upon the bottle, and a vent applied to reduce pressure as the cap is withdrawn, the whole adapted to serve with a marble, as set forth.
2. The bottle having an external thread, the marble b, and flexible ring 0, combined. with the screw-cap pl, having vent e and internal shoulder, as and for the purposes set forth.
Dated this 20th day of August, 1884.
HENRY OOOI-IRANE. JOSEPH MICHAEL DAY.
