SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.313,0-9, dated March 3, 1885.

Be it known that we, LEWIS BOLUs and PHILIP ELLSPERMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at -Wooster, in'the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Ventilating llIeasureFunnel, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in funnels. Its objects are, first, to combine in one funnel the separate advantages of asheetmetal funnel and a glass funnel, respectively; second,to provide a funnel with a ventilating air-space between double walls, to admit the escape of air whileliquids are running through the funnel-pipe into an airtight vessel; third, to provide a ventilating-rim for the top of the combined funnel, to unite the double walls thereof without obstructing the ventilating air-space between them; fourth, to provide an automatic cutoff valve or stopper, to close the mouth of the funnel-pipe, and thereby adapt the funnel to hold and measure any desired quantity of liquid and discharge the same in measured quantities at will. e attain these objects by the devices and mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing. Referring to the drawing, M B and G A are two separable funnels similar to funnels heretofore used, one situated entirely within the other, as shown, and separated from each other on every side by means of elevations a upon the inner surface of the outer funnel, forming the airspace 0 between the double walls. The inner funnel, G- A, is made of glass or other suitable glazed metal, thus affording allthe separate advantages of a glass funnel. The outer funnel, M B, is made of tin or other suitable sheet metal, and is provided with a handle, H, thus afibrding all the separate advantages of a sheet-metal funnel. These two funnels may be readily separated and used independently of each other, when desired, or may be combined, as set forth, to form a funnel with the ventilating air-space 0.
D is an annular rim for the top of the ventilating-funnel. It is provided along its top surface with perforations e, to permit the escape of the air passing upwardly through the intervening air-space 0, as shown by the arrows. It is further provided with downwardly-projecting flanges f f, which cover and unite. the upper edges of the separable funnels. From the margin of the rim D a metal strip, g, projects over the handle H. This strip is provided with upwardly-pro jecting lugs d, which intersect corresponding lugs, d, projecting downwardly from the lever L, forming an axis for the same. The inner end of the thnmblever L engages the upper end of the shaft 8, which extends downwardly to the month of the funnel'pipe A, where it connects with the cut-off valve or stopper 0. This stopper closes the mouth of the funnelpipe A by force of the spring t, operating against the thumb-lever L, and may be withdrawn at will by pressing upon the outer end of the thumb-lever L.
Heretofore funnel-valves intended for a like purpose have been constructed to be drawn up at will into the lower end of the nozzle by pressing upon a connected lever, and to open automatically. Our valve is located at the upper end or mouth oi the funnel-pipe,which it closes automatically by the weight of the liquids and force of the lever-spring pressing the stopper into the mouth of the funnel-pipe, (which is in the shape of an inverted cone,) thereby keeping it constantly closed, instead of open, as heretofore, the lever being used to open the valve instead of closing it. The basin of the inner funnel, G, is marked with graded measure-marks m, according to the quantities desired to be measured. The annular rim D may be readily removed, carrying with it the thumb-lever L, shafts, and stopper 0, and thus the inner and outer funnels may be separated and used singly when desired.
