Description

FFICE.
ELEAZAR COFFIN, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
DOVETAILING-MACHINE.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 31,301, dated February 5, 1861.
To all whom 'Lt 'may concern:
Be it known that I, ELEAZAR CorrrN, of Indianapolis, in the county ot Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction and Arrangement or' Dovetailing-hilachines, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters marked thereon. l
Figure l, is a perspective and Figs. 2, and 3, are sectional views showing the construe tion and general arrangement of the niachine.
Y, represents the main bed or table upon which the machineryT is attached.
I), is a balance wheel upon the shaft to which the cam K, and crank Q are attached. The crank O, operates the cutters C, C, and E, by means of the pitman or connection rod R, the lever S, connection rod T, sliding bar A, head guide B, and/ slots and pins Z, (which give motion or direction to `the chisels C, C, causing them to expand or separate at the required angle to form the si de cut of the dovetail). The point ot the chisel E, rests against the back of the chisels C, C, near their point so that their edges descend to about the same depth and takes out the chip or piece left between the ehisels C, C', as they expand or separate in descending.
The under cutter O, is operated by the cam K, by means of the sliding bar and pitman L, X, forming the bottom of the `dovetail as the timber is fed up. The sliding frame F, is operated by the screw rod Gr, for
the purpose of throwing the part where the dovetail is to be eut in line with the tools, it is then fed to the tools C, C, E, and O, by
any suitable device as indicated by the pinion rod H, and slide J.
The dovetail is formed in the end of the plank and is designed to be cut within a short space of the lower surface of the same. The plank is adjusted at a suitable elevation under the cutters C, C, and E, so that in their lowest descent they reach the line horizontal with the miter cutter' O, and just in front of the same. The chip or cut taken out at each descent of the tools C, C, and E, is gaged by any suitable feed say an eighth of an inch to each cut commencing at the end of the plank-and moving back at each descent or' the tools, to the required depth which should correspond to the sides of the box or drawer front. The dovetail thus formed will have two angular sides corresponding with the inclination of the cutters C, C, being widest at the bottom while the back part is perpendicular leaving the front open to receive the pins upon the side of the box or drawer, while the lower surface of the plank which remains under the cutter' O, is designed to cover the end of the pins upon the sides of the drawer front as iu a bureau or table drawer front.
That I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The cutters C, C, E, and O, operated in connection with the slots and pins Z, Z, head guide B, sliding bar A, connection rod T, lever S, connection rod It, crank Q and the cam K, pitman X, and sliding bar L, or their equivalents as set forth.
