To all whom; it may concern;
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. CHAMBER- LAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwich, in the county of New London, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Projectiles, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a pro jectile embodying my invention. -Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is an end view of a detached part of the gun or fire-arm with which the projectile is employed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a projectile having a chamber for compressed air and an inlet and outlet for the same, said outlet being closed by a plug, which, when removed, permits the escape of the air, so that the projectile is impelled, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a projectile, which is formed with a suitable point, a, a chamber, 1), for compressed air, and a tubular base, 0.
In the wallof the chamber I) is an air opening or inlet, d, which is covered by an inwardly opening valve, (2, the latter being properly secured within the chamber, it being noticed that the tubular base a constitutes the outlet for the air of the chamber 2).
B represents a screw-plug, which is fitted to the base 0, the wall whereof is threaded for the engagement of said plug.

In the outer face of the plug 13 is an opening, e, to receive the angular or squared portion D at the forward end of the stem C, or alug formed on or secured to the front face of the head 0.
Inthe outer face of the base 0 is an opening, f, to receive a pin, E, on the front face of the guide 0' of the head C, it being noticed that said guide abuts against the wall at the mit the same, it being noticed that the base 0 is closed by the plug B, and when the projectile is charged with the compressed air the valve d closes and the projectile is introduced into the gun or fire-arm, so that the lug D and pin E enter the openings cf, respectively.
When the fire-arm is to be discharged, the handle C is rotated, whereby the plug B is also rotated. The pin E prevents rotation of the projectile, and as the plugB is unscrewed from the base 0, and it bears against the guide C, the projectile is slightly advanced. \Vhen the plug is fully unscrewed from the base c. the opening of the latter is uncovered and the compressed air is liberated, the reaction whereof in the lire-arm at the baseof the bore forcibly impels the projectile from the arm, the result being accomplished without the smell, smoke, heat, and fouling tendency of powder-charged projectiles, another advantage of the invention being that by its use the I danger incident to the transportation an handling of explosives is avoided.
It is evident that the head C may have play in the fire-arm, so as to move rearward as it rotates and unscrews the plug B to avoid mov- 8o ing the projectile.
' Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A projectile having a chamber for compressed air, an inlet for the same, a valve closing said inlet, an air-outlet, and a rotary plug removably connected with said outlet, whereby when the plug is operated the airoutlet is opened or uncovered, substantially as andifor the purpose set forth.
2. An air-charged projectile, in combination with afire-armhaving a rotary head which is fitted to the base of the bore thereof and provided with a suitable handle, said head he 5 ing connectible with a rotary plug at the discharge end of the projectile, so as to operate the same and thus open the air-outlet of the proj eotile, set forth.
3. An air-charged projectile having a tubular base, and a removable plug fitted to said 5 base, said base and plug having each an opensubstantially as and for the purpose respectively, of the base and plug of the pro:
jectile, for preventing rotation of the project- :0 ile and removing the plug thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
