TOBOGGAN. No. 312,879. Patented Feb. 24, 1885.
l ll'rrED STATES Parent rtree.
JOHN R. MOLAREN, JR., OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
TOBOGGAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,879, dated February 24, 1885.
Application filed December 27, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ROBERT MCLAR- EN, Jr., ofthe city of Montreal, in the District of Montreal and Province of Quebec, Gana-da, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toboggans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. y
My invention consists, mainly, in a toboggan made up of crossbars and a number of narrow battens or strips. the under sides of which are so shaped as to present the least possible amount of frietional surface or area to the snow. Certain details of construction are also included in my invention, all of which are hereinafter set forth, and specifically claimed.
The object of the invention is to impart great strength to the toboggan without materially increasing the weight, and at the same time improve its sliding or traveling qualities.
For full comprehension of my improvements reference must be had tothe accompanying drawings, in which letters similar to those hereinafter used indicate like parts.
Figure l. represents a plan view of my iinproved toboggan; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a crosssection on line x x, Fig. l; and Fig. et a cross-section of a modification.
A A are two outer battens or strips, forming the sides of the toboggan, and extending around the bend. These are preferably heavier and stronger than the inner battens or strips, B B, and may be at or of any other suitable section. These battens or strips are laid closely together, and those mark ed B B curved, beveled, or so shaped on their under sidesi. c., on the running-surrce-as to curtail the frictional surface or area, and thus lessen the resistance offered by the snow or ice, and consequently increase the speed of the toboggan. In 8 I have shown curved or convex slats, and Fig. 4 shows the strips with a double bevel on the under side, either of which, or any other shape tending to lessen the direct rubbing-face ot' the strips, may be used for the purpose.
To hold the battens or strips together I provide suitable cross-bars or cleats, G C,at proper distances apart, and the strips are rmly fastened to same by screws, rivets, or other holdfasts, c c.
The curved front or bend C is maintained by the ordinary gut fastenings G2, or other means may be employed for the purpose.
The ordinary rods or bars D D are laid over the erossbars C C at each side of the toboggan, and are fastened thereto and to the strips A A by gut thongs d, as shown, or may be screwed, riveted, or otherwise lirmly secured in place. A
It will be apparent that by my invention all the, beneicial results above alluded to will be given, and I may add that from the pecu liar construction of my toboggan with narrow strips I am enabled to use up cheaper material than is possible in the present styles, and while great strength is given to the article by my method of putting it together, the construction is such that in case any ot' the slats should break they can be easily removed and new strips substituted without disturbing the fastenings of any other part of the toboggan.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
l. A tobogganl constructed from narrow strips or battens laid side by side and held by cross-bars, the under sides of said strips or battens being shaped so as to lessen their frictional surface or area, substantially as specified.
2. A toboggan made up of side strips or battens, A, shaped strips B. and cross-bars C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, in a toboggan, of the side strips, A, shaped strips B, cross-bars C, side rails, D, and suitable fastening devices, substantially as and for the purpose specilied.
J. R. MGLAREN, JR.
Vitnesses:
It. A. KELLOND, Faas. HY. REYNOLDS.
