SH EET-METAL ROOFING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,658, dated February 24, 1885.
(X model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, L. Lnwrs SAGENDORPH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gincinnati, Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sheet- Metal Roofing, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in holding-cleats for sections of sheet-metal rooting, its object being to secure 1o a cheap, efficient, and durable method and means of holding together the adjacent edges of sheetmetal roofing.
To this end my invention consists of a strip of metal embodying one or more movable tongues detached at the sides and at one end from the surrounding metal, the other end being incorporated with and forming part of the strip, the cleat being of a length sufficient to overlap the adjacent turned-up edges of roofing-sections, and to permit on one side of being fastened to the sheathing by nails, screws, or otherwise, the other side being so constructed that there is no closed or V-shaped angle for the lodgment of water, and the con- 2 5 sequent corroding and destruction of its parts, as has heretofore been the case in devices of this character.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichFigure l is a plan view or horizontal projection of the strip containing a tongue; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the holding-cleat in position; Fig. 3, a sectional end elevation of a roofing strip with thecleat applied; Fig. 4, another sectional 5 view showing two adjacent strips placed together, one having an overlapping edge, and the holdingcleat in position; and Fig. 5, a sectional elevation of two roofingstrips, with the addition of a covering-cap and the hold- 40 ing-cleat.
In the drawings, A designates the strip of metal constituting the holding-cleat, and a the tongue out from the strip, leaving the base uncut, so that the tongue can be bent 5 away from the strip to allow the insertion of the overlapping edge of the adjacent roofingsheet.
The holding-cleat is intended to be applied to roofing-sheets having upturned edges, as shown at 13, Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5, the manner of its use being as follows: The strip A, being first bent at a right angle on the line at m,
Fig. 1, is applied against the outside of the upturned edge 0 of the roofing-sheet B and nailed to the roof-sheathing, as shown in Fig. 5 3, the tongue at being at the same time bent outward away from the vertical portion of the covering-sheet. It the adjacent coveringsheet has a turn-over edge, it is applied as shown in Fig. 4, overlapping the edge 0 inside of the tongue, the latter being then bent over the several parts, clamping the whole firmly together. If the adjacent covering sheet has an upturned edge of equal height with the first,it is only necessary to cover the 6 exposed edges by a covering-cap and bend the tongue of the holding-cleat over all, as before, and as shown in Fig. 5.
The holding-cleats are used at such intervals as will securely retain the sheets against the force of winds; and it will-be apparent that by this mode of securing the same the ordinary expansion and contraction of the sheets is freely permitted without causing leaks or impairing, the strength of the joint. 5 It is also to be observed that by the construction of the cleat and the manner of its applition to the covering'sheets any moisture that might find its way between the sides of the tongue and the strip from which .it is cut will readily pass downward against the side of the upturned edge of the covering-sheet and escape Without lodgment, and consequently cause no rusting or injury to the parts. Another advantage is the economy of material'sg, over previous devices, by reason of the construction and method of applying the cleat.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A holding-cleat consisting of a strip of 0 metal embodying one or more tongues detached at the sides and at one end from the surrounding metal, and adapted to be bent over the upturned edges of adjacent metal roof-sheets, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
L. LEWIs SAG ENDORPH.
