SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,425, dated February 17, 1885.
Application tiled October 11, 1884. (X0 model.)
To all 2071,0722, it 72210 7 concern:
citizen of the United States, residing at Zauesville. in the county of Muskiugum and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vheeled Cultivators, of which the following is a description.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a plan view, of one half of a cultivator embodying my improvements.
My invention relates to the patent granted me April 19, 1881, No. 240,377, in which the plow-beams were provided with a resilient fleXible joint, and were provided with a lifting-spring and a draft-connection that tended to draw the plows into the ground.
My present invention consists ina development of that idea and improvement upon that construction, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings, A is a pipe-box encompassing the lower horizontal portions of the crank-axle next to thewheels. At one end of this pipe-box is fastened the draft-connection B, having a series of holes extending from a point above to a point below the axle.
To the pipe-box or other equivalent rocking connection is clamped or formed the portion 0 of the plow-coupling to which the portion D is jointed by a vertical pivot-bolt, a, while the portion D of the coupling is jointed by a horizontal pivot-bolt, b, to the coupling E on the front ends of the plow-beams F. These plow-beams are thus enabled to swing from side to side about the vertical pivot-bolt a, and have an up-and-down motion aboutthe horizontal pivotbolt b.
The middle coupling-piece, D, is formed with upright projecting flanges D D". These flanges are provided with a series of holes for adjustment of the horizontal bolt Z) higher or lower to increase or decrease the rocking force of the intermediate coupling, D. These flanges D D" on coupling D may be used as a substitute for flange B on coupling A to rock the coupling down and the flange B entirely dis pensed with, and the draft-rod of the team be attached directly to the axle or truck; but where additional weight is desired to be added to the PIOWDQZHIHS the flange B may be used, but the function of the intermediate coupling, D, is to.rocl itself by the plows own draft and the plows friction with theground, and the flange B to add to the rocking, if desired. It will be readily understood how the plow rocks itself, down by its own draft when it is remembered that it drat'tpoint I) is on a higher level than the axle, and is ajoint that allows movement in a vertical plane, so that a pull tends to bring the draft-point b and plowbeam down into the same horizontal line with the axle, no matter whether the strain is applied through flange B or not.
The arm D is attached to coupling D and projects rearward'ly under the plow-beams to a point near the bend of the latter, andis connected to a vertical stem, 0, which passes up through a hole in a cross-bar, G, and is held up by a spiral spring, (Z, placed around this stem and between the cross-bar and a not on top of said stem; but where the plowbeam is composed of a single bar the vertical stem 0 may pass up through the beam. cross-bar is provided with a vertical standard, G, having perforations in it, in one of which perforations is fastened by a bolt a link-rod, II, which extends forward to and passes upon both sides of the extended upper end of the pivot-bolta, and then by'a short bar, I, is attached to the lower end of the spring J, fastened to the upper port-ion of the truck or frame.
Instead of attaching the lifting-rod H to the vertical stem G, it may be attached to the plow-beam or any other suitable place in rear of the coupling-bolt.
The principal features of this improvement are two in number. Firstis to provide plow beams or gangs with a coupling which permits the yielding of the front of the plowbeam, which yielding or rocking is designed to accommodate an increased pressure of the plows on the ground. To accomplish this the arm D is provided. Now, when the draft strain is at the lower end of the connection B, or the horizontal boltin the upper holes ofthe flanges D D the tendency of the pipebox is to rock the couplings in rear of it downwardly, and by this'tendency the force is transmitted through the arm I), which exerts a'pull on the plow-beams in a downward direction in rear of the horizontal pivot-bolt l), which pull This is rendered elastic by the spiral spring d, and serves to hold the plows against hard ground, while the canting vofthe coupling D downward also throws the front end of the plow-beams downward and causes the plows to run deeper in the ground; butl would have it understood that rocking the couplings by means of the flange B on the coupling-sleeve A may be dis pensed with, and .the rocking done entirely by means of the coupling D and flanges D D by a change of the horizontal bolt from the lower to the upper holes in flanges D D of the intermediate coupling, D. To dispense with the flange B on coupling-sleeve A the draft-rod may be hooked or attached to the axle or truck directly.
The second general feature of the invention is the application of the lifting force of the spring J to the plow-beams at a point in rear of the vertical bolt a of the coupling, and in such a manner as will allow the liftingspring to draw always in line with the vertical pivotbolt a. This I accomplish by the link-rod H, which passes on both sides of the extended vertical bolt a, so that no matter whether the plow-beams are following in a direct line or thrown to one side the spring pulls always'in direct line with the pivot-bolt a, and does not pull the plows around when the beams are thrown to one side.
The guiding of the link-rod H by the vertical pivot-bolt a, to prevent the spring J from pulling the plow-beanis to one side, is only necessary when thesprin g is located elsewhere than over the said pivot-bolt. lVhen its attachment is immediately over the said pivotbolt, such guiding effect is not needed, as the object of this part of my invention is to lift the plow by attaching to the beam and lift directly by way of the pivotbolt regardless of the location of the springs. Lifting the plow-beam by attaching directly to the beam in rear of its pivot-bolt, and lifting directly in line of its pivot-bolt, not only prevents pulling the plows to one side when out of a direct or straight line, but assists to hold the weight off of the arm D, which otherwise would have to carry the weight of the plow unless assisted by the springs lift. But I do not confine myself to this style of plow beam or gangs, as this mode of lifting may be applied to any of the ordinary plows adapted to be used in connection with wheels or trucks.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A plow-beam combined with an axle and an intermediate coupling, which coupling is hung upon said axle to rock in a vertical'plane, and which coupling and beam are also connected together by a joint permitting movement in a vertical plane, which joint is located above the level of the axle in order to rock the plow-beam down and increase the downward thrust of the plowbeam by the plows own draft or friction, as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the plow-beam and a rocking pipe-box or journaled connection, of the intermediate coupling jointed to the plow-beam above the level of the axle, and having 11 arm extending back under the plow-beam and fastened to the beam by an elastic or spring connection, as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination, with the plowbeams, of a rocking pipe-box or connection, and a coupling having vertical and horizontal pivotbolt a and b, and an arm, D, the stem 0, crossbar G. and spiral or elastic spring, as and for the purposes described.
4. The combination, with a vertically-moving plow-beam and its coupling in front hav ing a single vertical pivot-bolt, of a liftingspring connected to the plow in rear of its vertical pivot-bolt, and a guide or guides for causing the lift of spring to be in line with the pivot-bolt whether the plows are following in direct line or thrown to either side, as and for the purposes described.
5. In combination with the plow and its draft-coupling with single vertical pivot-bolt, the connecting link or red H, guided to or over the pivot-bolt, and connected to the plow at one end in rear of the pivot-bolt and to a lifting-spring at the other, as and for the purposes described.
6. In a cultivator, the combination ofa vertically and laterally moving plow-beani having a coupling with a single vertical pivotbolt and a lifting spring and guide and con necting link or red H, for causing it to exert its lifting force on the plow in rear of its pivotbolt, and in line with the pivot-bolt, regard less of the springs location, as described.
