United States Patent C 3,123,479 GRANULATED F091) PACKAGE William Drutt, Elkins Park, Pa., assigner to Sol'E.
Zubrow, doing business as S. E. Zubrow Co., Philadelphia, Pa.
Filed Feb. 9, 1961, Ser. No. 88,145 2 Claims. (Cl. 99-171) This invention relates to a package, and more particularly to a bag wrapped in la manner which obviates the necessity for sealing the open end of the bag.
The present invention is particularly useful as a bread- -ing bag. In use, the package of the present invention is sold with bread crumbs disposed within the bag. Articles of food which are intended to be breaded such as` veal cutlets, pork chops, etc., are placed into the bag. Thereafter, the bag is vigorously manipulated so that the articles of food are provided with a coating of bread crumbs.
The package of the present invention is designed so as to eliminate the necessity for sealing the open end of a bag. This results in material savings in the manufacturing and merchandising of the present invention. The nature of the present invention permits the same to be used a plurality of times until the supply of bread crumbs within the bag is exhausted.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a novel package.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a novel breading bag.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a novel package which obviates the necessity for sealing an open end f a bag containing edible material in the nature of powder or crumbs.
It is yet another object of the present -invention to provide a novel breading bag containing bread crumbs into which articles of food may be placed, with the bag being capable of being vigorously manipulated so as to provide a coating of bread crumbs on the article of food.
Gther objects lwill appear hereinafter.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention there is shown in the drawings a form which is presently preferred; it being understood, however, that this invention is not limited to the precise arrangements and instrumentalities shown.
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the package of the present invention.
FIGURE 2 is a transverse sectional view taken along lines 2-2 of FIGURE l. i
`FIGURE 3 is a perspective view showing the first stage of the p-rocess of opening the package of the present invention.
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view showing the second stage of the process of opening the package of lthe present invention.
FIGURE 5 is a perspective View of the bag of the present invention.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like numerals indicate like elements, there is shown in FIG- URE l a package designated generally as 10.
The package comprises an imperforate impervious polyethylene bag 12 having a yclosed end 14 and an open end `16. Polyethylene is a Well-known polymeric material. The bag 12 is provided with a fold line 1S and a fold line 20.
The bag 12 is folded along the fold `lines 18 and 2t) into three substantially identical overlapping sections 22, 24 and 26.
The first section 22 extends from the closed end 14 to the fold line 18. The second section 24 extends from the fold line 18 to the fold line 2i). rI'he third section 26 extends from the fold line 211i to the open end 16. A

A cover sheet 3ft is adhesively secured to a portion of the first section 22 and the second section 24. As shown more clearly in FIGURE 1, the cover sheet 30 has a length corresponding to the length of the sections 22.-26. As shown more clearly in FIGURE 2., the cover sheet 30 extends over an edge of the insert member 28.
A tear string 32 is provided between the fold line 20 and the adjacent edge of the insert member 28. As shown more clearly in lFIGURES 1 and 3, one end of the tear string 32 extends beyond the end of the package 10. The other end of the tear string 32 may be fixedly secured to the insert member 2S. Preferably, said other end of the tear string 32 is adhesively secured to the outer surface of the second section 24 by the cover sheet 30 adjacent to the fold line 2f).
The package 10 of the present invention is utilized in the following manner:
The package 1t?l is merchandised in the manner shown in FIGURE 1. It should be noted that the open end 16 is not sealed. The user opens the package 10 of the present invention by tearing the cover sheet 3G. The tear string 32 facilitates the tearing of the cover sheet 30. When the tear string 32 has been manipulated to the position shown in FIGURE 3, the cover sheet 30 has been separated into a first portion 3&1 and a second lportion 36. The relative disposition of the first and second portions 3d and 36 are shown more clearly in FIGURE 5.
After the cover sheet 3i@ has been separated into a `first portion 34 and a second portion 36, the insert member 2S is removed. At this point, the package 1li assumes the position shown in FIGURE 4. Thereafter, the third section 26 is folded over so that the bag 12 assumes the position shown in FIGURE 5. The bag 12 is provided with bread crumbs 38 within the first section 22.
The article of food is placed Within the bag 12 by Way of the open end 16. Thereafter, the user grasps the open end 16 in his fist so as to prevent the escape of bread crumbs. Thereafter, the user shakes the bag 12 so as to provide a coating of bread crumbs on the article of food. The bread crumbs 38 remain Within the bag 12 at all times. When the supply of bread crumbs 3S is exhausted, the user will require a new package 10i.
The package 10 of the present invention enables articles of food to ibe coated with bread crumbs in a more rapid and expeditious manner. The necessity for plates, pots, pans, etc., as was conventional heretofore in the breading of articles of food, have been eliminated. It will be obvious that the breaded articles are removed from the container 12 after a short period of time, and that the bag 12 may be folded in the manner shown in the drawing with a rubber band being utilized to retain the package 10 in its assembled disposition.
While the package 10 is adapted to contain bread crumbs 38, it ywill be appreciated that other articles in the nature of a powder, crumbs, flakes, etc., may be merchandised in -the package 10 of the present invention. While the package 1f? of the present invention is adapted to contain bread crumbs, it should be noted that the end 16 of the bag 12 is open at all times. The disposition of the insert member 2S between the fold line 1S and the cover sheet 3d prevents the bread crumbs 38 from creeping toward the open end 16 of the bag 12 during shipment.
The present invention may be embodied in other specic forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof and, accordingly, reference should be made to the appended claims, rather than to the foregoing speciiication as indicating the scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A package comprising an imperforate bag having a closed end and an open end, said bag being -folded so as to have rst, second and third overlapping sections, said irst and second sections being substantially the same size, said rst section containing the closed end of said bag, a granulated food product in said iirst section, said third section containing the open end of said bag and being disposed between said irst and second sections, said irst, second and third overlapping sections of said ybag being dened yby a rst fold 1ine between said rst and second sections and a second fold line between said second and -third sections, a rigid insert member disposed between said first and second sections, a cover sheet of readily tearable material secured to a portion of said iirst and second sections, said insert member extending between said iirst fold line and said cover sheet, said cover sheet extending over said closed end and being in abutting contact with an edge of said insert member, `whereby said insert member will apply pressure at said first fold line to retain the toed product in said iirst section.
2. A package in accordance with claim 1 wherein said bag is made from an impervious polymeric material, said food product being bread crumbs, and a tear string juxtaposed to said cover sheet for substantially the entire length thereof.
