UNITED STATES PAT NT IFFICE.
EBEN BURGESS, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
BED-LOUNGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,327, dated February 17, 1885.
Application filed February 16, 1884. (No model.)
. To'aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EBEN BURGESS, of Chelsea, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented Improvements in Bed-Lounges, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
My improvements in bed-lounges relate especially to the pillow-boards and to means for lifting them automatically when the lounge is opened to form a bed. I
Figure 1 is a rear side view ofa bed or foldinglounge embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows the same unfolded; and Fig. 3 is a section in the lines :0, the lounge being, however, opened.
The base A and top part, B, of the lounge,
* hinged together at ca, are and may be of usual construction and of suitable material, and may be upholstered in usual manner to constitute a bed when opened, as in Fig. 2. The base A and top part, B, are each provided, the one at its upper and the other at its under side, near the head end of the lounge, with pillow or head elevating boards I) c,eacl1 hinged properly to its own part, as at d e. The board b has pivoted upon one side of ita foot or lifter, b, while the board 0 has pivoted upon one side of it a similar foot orlifter, 0. (See Fig. 3.) The feet or lifters b c are united by means of a connecting device, f, herein shown as a string, cord, or wire, which is extended through the side ofthe frame-Work,that when the top portion, 13, is turned over, as in Figs. 2 and 3, the said connecting device shall simultaneously be made slack, thus permitting the foot-movers 71 m (shown as spiral springs) to draw the said feet or lifters from their dotted into their full line positions, Fig. 3, the free ends of the said feet during such movement striking against the braces, orplates n 0 and lifting the pillow or head elevating board, as in Fig. 3. When the part B is turned up and over uponthebase A, the connection f is bent so that it acts to draw the feet from their full into their dotted line position in opposition to the pull of the springs m and h, ahd the pillow or head elevating boards,no longer braced up,are permitted to assume a horizontal position.
I do not desire to limit my invention to the exact devices shown, but desire that my invention include any well-known mechanical equivalents for the feet. and connection and spring, whereby the said feet or pillow-board lifters are automatically lifted by or during the mere act of opening the lounge to convert it into a bed.
I claim- 1. In a bed or folding lounge, the base A and top B, hinged together, the said base and top having each a hinged pillow-board, and each of said pillow-boards having the lifters or supports b c hinged or pivoted thereto, combined with the connections f for operating said lifters or supports, substantially as described.
2. In a bed or folding lounge, the base and top B, hinged together, thesaid base and top having each a hinged pillow-board, and each of said pillow-boards having the lifters or supports b c hinged or pivoted thereto, and springs m and h, to operate said lifters or supports, combined with the connections f, also to operate said lifters, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EBEN BURGESS.
