it is therefore a prhnary object of the present invention to provide a new and useful force applying assert bly capable of being mounted on portable power tools much as dril s of all types having an axial thrust applying handle and a rotational anchoring grip for directing the tool against the Work. The pressure-applying assembly is particularly usable in connection with power operated drills of a heavy duty type enabling a single operator to perform work in a rapid manner.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an attachment assembly for power operated drills by means of which the drill may be directed and held in engagement with the work in such a manner as to reduce the likelihood of drill bit breakage thereby reducing the danger of injury.
An additional object of the present invention is to provide a pressure-applying attachment for power operated drills of a portable heavy duty type whereby greater control over the drill may be exercised so as to reduce wear on the drill bits and increase the speed with which work may be performed.
In accordance with the foregoing objects, the attachment assembly of the present invention involves a fulcrum mounting assembly capable of being attached to power drill handles of difierent types for establishing a pivot axis disposed in fixed angular relation to the rotational anchoring rip on the power drill so that a lever member may be pivotally connected about said pivot axis, one end of which being connected by a work-engaging flexible chain to the work, the other end being engaged by the operator with a mechanical advantage to provide reaction for axial thrust and rotational torque developed between the power-operated drill and the Work.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a top plan view of the attachment assembly of the present invention mounted on a power-operated tool device;
FIGURE 2 is a partial side elevational view of the attachrnent assembly illustrated in FiGURE l and the power-operated tool device on which it is mounted;

Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be observed from FIGURES 6 and 7 that the attachment assembly generally referred to by reference numeral 10 is mounted on the end of a power-operated drill generally referred to by reference numeral 12, the attachment assembly l6 and drill 12 being held and manipulated by the operator 14 for engagement with either a workpiece 16 supported in a vertical plane as illustrated in FIG- URE 6 or a workpiece 18 supported in a vertical plane as illustrated in FEGURE 6 or a workpiece 18 supported in a horizontal plane as illustrated in FlGURE 7. The attachment assembly 163 includes a lever member 24) adapted to be engaged adjacent one end by the hip of the operator 14 as shown in lGURE 6 or under the armpit of the operator 14 as shown in FIGURE 7. The lever member 29 is therefore engaged with the workpiece 16 or 18 by means of a flexible work-engaging element generally referred to by reference numeral 22, the lever member 2% being pivotally supported on a fulcrum assembly 24 fastened to the power operated drill 12. The power-operated drill 12 to which the present invention relates, is of the heavy-duty portable type which includes an electric motor within a stator casing assembly 26 to which the rotational anchoring grip members 23 and 3d are connected and adapted to be grasped in the hands of the operator for directing the drill bit 32 against the workpiece and to provide reaction to the rotational torque developed on the stator casing 26 when the rotating drill bit 32 engages the workpiece. An axial thrust handle 34 is also provided on such portable types of power drills, the fulcmm assembly 24 being mounted on said thrust handle. It will be observed, however, that the fulcrum assembly 24- establishes a pivotal connecting axis for the lever member 2% so that the lever member 20 extends from the power tool 12 in angularly spaced relation to the grip members 23 and 3t Referring now to FIGURE 5 in particular, it will be observed that the fulcrum assembly 24 includes a handle engaging member 36, inclndin an end engaging portion 33 connected to a side mounting portion 4% in which there is formed a slot 42. Projecting upwardly from the end engaging portion 38 of the member 36, are a pair of parallel spaced pivotal mounting cars 44 having aligned apertures 46 through which a pivot axis extends. The cars 44 are disposed in planes which are at an angle to the plane of the side mounting portion 43 whereby the lever member 2t may be pivoted about the axis through the apert res 46 in a plane formed at the aforementioned angular relation to the grip members 23 and 30. A pivot bolt 48 and lock nut St is therefore provided, said bolt 48 extending through the aligned apertures 46 and through the aperture 52 in the lever member 26 for pivotal connection of the lever member to the fulcrum assembly.
Referring now to FIGURES 1 and 2 in particular, it will be observed that the arcuate end portion of the handle 34 of the power tool 12 seats the end engaging portion 38 of the handle mounted member 36 the side portion 4% of which is disposed against the side of the handle 34 to slidably mount in adjusted position, a locking bar member 54. The locking bar member is provided with a pair of end tabs 56 which engage the vertical sides of the handle 34. The locking bar member 54 is also provided with a slot 58 through which a locking bolt 60 extends, said locking bolt 69 being threaded for threadedly receiving thereon the nut element 62, a fulcrum holding bar 64 and a wing nut 66. As shown in FIG- URE 2, the sides of the handle 34 are locked between 3 the locking bar member 54 and the holding bar memoer 64, the end tabs 56 being disposed on the outside and projecting toward the bar 64. The locking bar 54 and holding bar 64 are therefore mounted in adjustably locked positions on the side portion 49 and in engagement with the handle 34 by means of the bolt 6% extending through the slots 58 and 42 and the aperture in the holding bar 64 as more clearly seen in FIGURE 3, the parts being held in locked assembled condition by the wing nut 66. The handle locking assembly is also adaptable for mounting the fulcrum assembly 24 on a different type of handle it? such as illustrated in FIGURE 4 which ineludes an upper grip portion 72 and downwardly converging side portions '74. For this type of a handle, the
locking bar member 54 is reversed so that the end tabs 56' project away from the handle and bar 64 and the downwardly tapering Wedge projections 76 engage on the inside of the downwardly converging side portions 74 of the handle 7%. The'remaining parts 64 and 66 of the locking assembly may then be applied as illustrated in FIGURE 3. It will therefore be apparent that the locking bar 54 may be mounted in an adjustable position on 'the mounting portion 4% so as to either engage parallel or converging side portions of a handle depending on the type of a handle to be accommodated.
The lever member 20 includes a tapered end portion 78 more closely spaced from its pivot axis thanthe other end portion 88 which is adapted to be engaged by the operator. The end portion 78 as more clearly seen in FIGURE 8 is provided with a slot 82 in its lower edge through which a connecting pin $4 extends and by means of which the flexible chain 22 is connected to the lever member. The slot 82 accommodates pivotal displacement of the chain so that it may be extended from the lever member in embracing relation to'the workpiece, the free end of the chain 22 having a hook 36 as shown in FIGURE 5 so as to form a loop about the workpiece resisting displacement of the workpiece away from the end 73 of the lever member.
From the foregoing description, the construction and utility of the attachment assembly of the present invention will be apparent. It will therefore be appreciated of portable power drills may be directed and held against workpieces for drilling thereof with enhanced ,facility.
This is achieved because of the arrangement of'the lever facturing economy in mind and also are suitable for mounting on different typesand models of power tools. The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed. 7
What'is claimed as new is as follows: 7 1. A Work pressure-applying assembly for a" portable power tool device having an axial thrust handle and a rotational anchor grip comprising fulcrum means mounted on said thrust handle for establishing a pivot axis on that by use of the attachment assembly heavy duty types 7 said power device in fixed angularly spaced relation to said rotational anchor grip, lever means mounted by said fulcrum means about said pivot axis in a plane angularly spaced from said rotational anchor grip and having end portions disposed on opposite sides of the pivot axis and work-engaging means operatively connected to one end portion of said lever means in spaced adjacency to the power device, said other end portion of the lever means being more remotely spaced from the pivot axis than said one end portion for providing reaction to axial thrust and rotational torque developed between the power device and work being operated on, said fulcrum means comprising handle end engaging means adapted to abut against a grip portion of said thrust handle, side mounting means connected to said handle end engaging means in a plane parallel to said anchor grip, locking Wedge means mounted on said side mounting means forlocking engagement with the thrust handle and'pivotal con necting means projecting from said handle end engaging means at an angle to the side mounting means for connection to the lever means about said pivot axis.
2. The combination of claim lwherein said locking wedge means includes a bar member slidably positioned on said side mounting means, and wedge projections on said bar member for engagement with said thrust handle in an adjustably locked position of the bar member on the side mounting means. 7

The combination of claim 2 wherein said workengaging means comprises flexible means pivotally connected to said lever'means at said one end portion and hook means connected to said flexible means for embracing said work to resist displacement thereof away from said one end portion of the lever means.

A work-pressure-applying assembly for a portable power tool device having an axial thrust handle and a rotational anchor grip, said assembly. comprising fulcrum means mounted on said thrust handle for establishing a" pivot axis on said power device, lever means mounted" by said fulcrum means about said pivot axis and having end portions disposed on opposite sides of the pivot axis and work-engaging means operatively connected to one end portion of said lever means in spaced adjacency to the power device, the other end portion of the lever means being more remotely spaced from the pivot axis than said one end portion for providing reaction to axial 5.
