Filed Sept. 9, 1958, Ser. No. 759,994 2 Claims. ((11. 25-131) Our invention relates to concrete forms, and more particularly to a new and improved manner of securing the Whalers to said forms.
More specifically our invention relates to a concrete form in which the tie members are utilized for mounting Whaler mounting members on the form member in such a manner as to be quickly and easily placed in position and held firmly in position on the form.
It is a further purpose of our invention to provide a suitable bnacket member for mounting the Whalers in position, that is mounted on an extending portion of a tie member in such a manner as to rigidly supported thereon and readily, quickly put in position and removed from the tie member. when this is desired.
More specifically our invention comprises a tie member that is provided with a plurality of openings therein, certain of said openings being utilized for securing the tie member to the form members and an opening in a part of said tie member projecting beyond said form members being used for detachably mounting a bracket thereon for mounting the Whalers on the form.
ilt is a further purpose of our invention to provide a bracket for securing Whalers to concrete forms comprising a pair of legs extending at right angles to each other, one of said legs having a longitudinal slot therein adapted to receive the above referred to tie member slidably, which leg of said bracket is provided with means for detachably connecting the bracket with the tie member and the other leg of which is located adjacent the opposite end of said first mentioned leg from said means for detachably securing the bracket to the tie member, which leg serves as means for confining the Whaler between itself and portions of the form extending parallel thereto in spaced relation to said leg.
It is a further purpose of our invention to provide a bracket of the above mentioned character, which has a laterally projecting tubular housing portion that aligns with the slotted leg of the bracket and which has a pin mounted therein that is adapted to extend through the opening in the tie member and the transverse opening in r the above referred to slotted leg of the bracket and has suitable means for urging said pin in a direction to intersect said slot, said pin being provided with means thereon that is adapted to be operated to move the pin out of intersecting relation to said slot against the action of said resilient means.
Other objects and advantages of our invention will appear as the description of the drawings proceeds. We desire to have it understood, however, that we do not intend to limit ourselves to the particular details shown or described, except as defined by the claims.

Referring in detail to the drawings, in FIG. 1 is shown a concrete wall ltl, which has been poured between the form members 11, which are connected by means of a tie member 12. Preferably the tie member 12 is made as shown in FIG. 5, with an opening 13 in one end thereof and a pair of openings 14 and 15 in the other end thereof. The form members 11 are ordinarily provided with flanges 16 spaced form the marginal edges thereof, in the case of metal forms, and pins 17 extend through the openings 13 and 14 in the tie member 12 and through aligning openings in the flanges 16 of the form members 11, which are notched at their marginal edges to accommodate the tie members 12. Said pins are ordinarily provided with heads 18 on one end thereof and with a tapered end 19, as Well as a slot 26, in which a wedge 21 is inserted to firmly secure the form members 11 and the tie member 12 to each other. Said tie members '12 are located at predetermined distances apart along the form, as is customary. While the tie members 12 are shown as being provided for securing metal form members together, these can also be used in a similar manner to that illustrated for securing wooden form members in position in a well known manner.
The portion 55 of the tie member 12 that extends beyond the outer marginal portion of the form defined by edge portions of the flanges 16, is provided with an opening 15, and preferably the tie members are provided with rows of perforations 22, 23 and 24 whereby weakened portions are provided so that the end portions of the tie members '12 can be broken olt so as to not project from the wall after the wall has thoroughly set.
Mounted on each of the tie members 12 is an angular bracket member 25, which has a horizontal leg 26 and a vertical leg 27 extending perpendicularly to the leg 26. The leg 27 is provided with a reinforcing rib 28 and with a longitudinally extending rounded rib portion 29, as Well as an inclined face 30 extending from the upper flat end face 31 of said vertically extending leg portion 27. The horizontally extending leg portion 26 is provided with a slot 32 therein extending longitudinally thereof and extending through both the ends 53 and 54 of said leg portion 26. Said slot 32 is of uniform cross section throughout its length and is relatively narrow in a horizontal direction and wide in a vertical directon, conforming substantially to the cross sectional shape of the fiat tie member 12, so that when said tie member 12 s in position in the slot 32 the bracket will be mounted rigidly on the tie member. The bracket is longitudinally slidable on the tie member lengthwise of the leg 26 into its Whaler supportng position. Said horizontal leg 26 has a that top face 33.
Extending laterally from the leg portion 26 is a tubular housing 34, which has a cylindrical bore 35 therein, extending from the end wall 36 thereof to the main body portion of the leg 26, and said leg 26 has a transverse opening 37 therein, that aligns with the bore 35 and is an extension thereof, said bore 37 extending through the side face 38 of the horizontally extending leg 26 that is opposite the side face 39 thereof from which the tubular housing 34 projects. The end wall 36 has an opening 40 therein that is located centrally with respect to the bore 35. Mounted on the leg 26 is the transverse opening 37 and adapted to be withdrawn into the tubular housing 34-, is a pin 41 which has a tapered extremity '42 terminating in a rounded nose 43, said pin fitting slidably in the cross passage 37 and being adapted to fit in the opening 15 in the tie member 12 to hold the bracket 25 in fixed lengthwise of the wall.
position on the projecting portion of the tie member. An operating handle 44 for the pin 41 is provided, which comprises a right angular end portion of the shank 45, which extends-into an opening 46in the pin 41-with a drive fit.
Since the shank 45 is of considerably smaller diameter than the pin 41, it will be evident that a shoulder-47, is
provided at the inner end of the pin 41, against which a compression coil spring 48 engages, the other end of the coil spring engaging against the inner face of the end wall 36. The spring 48is or such a characterthat it is compressed when the pin is moved to the left of the posi tion shown in'FlG. 3, which is that in which the pin would 'be in position in the opening 15 in the projecting part of the tie ,member 12. With the bracket in position as shown in FIG. 1, the Whaler members '49 are put inposition between the rib portion 29 on the upstanding leg27 of the bracket 25. and the vertical edges of the flanges 16 of the form members, being preferably of such a size that these will be driven into position so as to'tightly clamp the formvmembers in alignment with each other The lower Whaler member 49 will. rest on the flat face 33 on, topof the horizontal leg 26 of the bracket andthe upper Whaler member 49 will rest on the lower whaler member 49 as shown in FIG. 1.
When it is desired to assemble the bracket members with the tie member all that is necessary is topull outwardly on the operating handle 44 sufficiently to pull the pin '41 back against the compression of the spring 48 so that no portion of the pin .41 will intersect the slot 32. The bracket is then slid onto tie member 12 until the hole15'in the tie member aligns with the opening 37, whereupon the operating handle 44 is released and the spring 44 projects the pin- 41 through the opening 15. The bracket 25 is then locked in fixed position rigidly on the tie member 12. If the alignment of the opening 15 with the opening 37 is not perfect, the tapering end por- .tion.42.and the rounded nose 43 on the pin 41 will aid in .the alignment of theseopenings' so that the pin 41 will properly pass through the opening 15.
When it is desired to dismantle the form, the handle 44 is operated towithdraw the pin 41 fromthe opening 15.and the bracket26 is slid oil the tie member 12. The
1 pins 17 can then be removed and the tie member broken 1 off, asis customary in the case of such tie members in concrete construction. Obviously the bracket '25 can be used over and over again as Well as the Whalers 29, and as well as the form members 11.
What-we claim is:
1. -In a concrete form comprising spaced form members, a tie member rectangular in cross section connecting said form members and having an end portion extending rigidly outwardly beyond one of said form members, said projecting portion of said tie member having an opening .tion shown in FIG. '3 to thus urge the pin intothe positherein and a Whaler mounting member comprising a bracket having a pair of legs extending perpendicularly to each other, one of said legs extending horizontally and having a passage rectangular in cross section extending longitudinally therethrough and longitudinally slidably receiving said tie member therein, the other leg extending upwardlyfrom one end of said horizontal leg in spaced relation to one of said form members, said horizontal leg having a transverse opening therein near the other end thereof intersecting said passage, a spring projected pin. mounted in said transverse opening and engaging in said opening in said tie member to hold said bracket in fixed position on said tie member, and means on said pin for withdrawing said pin from said opening.
2. In a concrete form comprising spaced form members, a tie member having a pair of openings in one end thereof, said openings being spaced longitudinally of said tie member to provide an inner and an outer opening therein, means extending through said inner opening for securing said tie member to one of said form members with the portion of said tie member'having said outer opening therein projecting rigidly outwardly beyond said form member, said tie member being polygonal in cross section and a Whaler mounting member comprising a bracket havinga pair of legs extending perpendicularly to each other, one of said legs extending horizontally and having a passage polygonal in cross section extending longitudinally therethrough and longitudinally slidably receiving said tie member therein,.the other of said legs extending upwardly from one end of said horizontal. leg in spaced relation to one of said form members, said other leg hav ing a vertical inner face and an inclined upper end face extending to .said vertical inner face, said horizontal leg having a transverse opening therein near the other end thereof intersectingv said passage, and transversely movable means engaging in said transverse and outer openings to hold said bracket in ,fixed position on said tie member.

Claims (1)

1. IN A CONCRETE FORM COMPRISING SPACED FROM MEMBERS, A TIE MEMBER RECTANGULAR IN CROSS SECTION CONNECTING SAID FORM MEMBERS AND HAVING AN END PORTION EXTENDING RIGIDLY OUTWARDLY BEYOND ONE OF SAID FORM MEMBERS, SAID PROJECTING PORTION OF SAID TIE MEMBER HAVING AN OPENING THEREIN AND A WHALER MOUNTING MEMBER COMPRISING A BRACKET HAVING A PAIR OF LEGS EXTENDING PERPENDICULARLY TO EACH OTHER, ONE OF SAID LEGS EXTENDING HORIZONTALLY AND HAVING A PASSAGE RECTANGULAR IN CROSS SECTION EXTENDING LONGITUDINALLY THERETHROUGH AND LONGITUDINALLY SLIDABLY RECEIVING SAID TIE MEMBER THEREIN, THE OTHER LEG EXTENDING UPWARDLY FROM ONE END OF SAID HORIZONTAL LEG IN SPACED RELATION TO ONE OF SAID FORM MEMBERS, SAID HORIZONTAL LEG HAVING A TRANSVERSE OPENING THEREIN NEAR THE OTHER END THEREOF INTERSECTING SAID PASSAGE, A SPRING PROJECTED PIN MOUNTED IN SAID TRANSVERSE OPENING AND ENGAGING IN SAID OPENING IN SAID TIE MEMBER TO HOLD SAID BRACKET IN FIXED POSITION ON SAID TIE MEMBER, AND MEANS ON SAID PIN FOR WITHDRAWING SAID PIN FROM SAID OPENING.
