No. 312,044 Patented Feb. 10, 1885.
WITNESSES: INVRNTOR TVL- WM W f ATTORNEYS,
NITED STATES ATENT OFFICE,
CHARLES VVAGENFOHR, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
MANUFACTURE OF IMITATIONBRONZE PLATES FOR BOOK-COVERS, FURNITURE-PANELS, dc.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,044, dated February 10, 1885.
Application filed November l", 1834. (Specimens i To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES WAGENFoHn, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and use-. ful Improvements in the Manufacture of Imitation Bronze Plates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved method of manufacturing imitation bronze plates from paper, pasteboard, or other suitable material, to be used as covers for books, portfolios, furniturepanels, advertising, and other purposes; and the invention consists of a method of making imitation bronze and other metal plates by embossing a metal-covered foundationplate and bronzing and varnishing the surface of the embossed plate, so as to give it the appearance of old bronze or other metal.
The invention consists, secondly, of an embossed metal-covered foundation-plate having a bronzed and varnished surface.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view of an imitation bronze plate made according to my improved method, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In carrying out my invention a foundationplate, A, of paper, pasteboard, or other suitable material, faced with silk, muslin, or cloth,
. is covered with a thin layer, B, of metal,
formed of metal leaf, metal-covered paper, foil, tinsel, or bronze-powder. The foundation-plate is then embossed by means of an embossing-plate into which the required design has been engraved or otherwise produced. The surface of the embossed metal-covered foundation-plate is next sized and coated with pulverized graphite, bronzepowder, or other metallic powder, over which a coat of varnish is placed to protect the bronze coating. The 'bronze'plates thus produced have the appearance of real bronze or other metals, and can be sent a very artistic appearance.
By using bronze-powders of different colors on the same plate a variegated effect may be imparted to the same, and thereby the artistic appearance of the same considerably enhanced.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The method herein described of making imitation bronze and other metal plates, which consists in embossing a metal'covered foundation-plate and then bronzing and varnishing the surface of the same, substantially as set forth. 7
2. As a new article of manufacture, an imitation bronze plate composed of an embossed metal covered foundation plate having a bronzed and varnished surface, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES WAGENFOHR.
