JAMES F; GILLILAND, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
MEMORANDUM-HOLDER FOR TELEPHONE-BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,977, dated February 10, 1885.
A pplication filed January 21, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES F. GILLILAND, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Memorandum-IIolders for Telephone-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is to provide a convenient and inexpensive device for attachment to telephone apparatus, whereby memoranduni-sheets may be held thereon.
That portion of the apparatus most convenient for writing purposes is the top of the batterybox, and my device has been constructed with especial retercncethcreto; and it consists, mainly, in a clip adapted to pass across the top of the shelf composing the top of said battery-box and under its edges, where it is se- .cured by appropriate fastenings, small clampscrews, as shown, being deemed preferable. To this clip may be secured a pencil and a paper-file hook, as shown, and as will be present-ly more particularly described.
Referring to the accompanying drawing which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a perspective view of a set of telephone apparatus with my improved memoranduni-holder secured to the top of the battery-box, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the top of said box, the holder and the memorandum-sheets held thereby.
In said drawings, the portions marked A represent the top of the battery-box, B the memorandum-sheets, and C the clip or memorandum-holder.
The box-top A is constructed, as usual, of a form adapted to receive memorandum sheets, and its edges preferably project somewhat over the sides of the box.
The memorandumsheets B may be plain sheels of paper; but I prefer to print a calendar on the upper edge, and arrange the clip so that said calendar will show above it, as
indicated in Fig. 1. The sheets are also usually formed into blocks or tablets for convenience in handling.
The clip O is preferably a straight bar of metal of appropriate size, having its ends 0 bent around, so as to pass beneath the edges of the box-top A, and said ends provided with clamp-screws c, which pass up through said ends and are adapted to cOlllG in contact with the under side of said box-top. The pencil O and tile-hook G are attached to one end of the clip, as shown, and are for the ordinary uses of such devices.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination, with a shelf, of a clip extending across said shelf, and having its ends bent down and under the edges of said shelf, with screws in said bentunder portions whichscrew up against the under side of said shelf, whereby memorandumsheets may be clamped in position, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a shelf composing part of a set of telephone apparatus, of a clip for securing memorandulnblanks in place on said shelf. said clip being extended across said shelf and fastened to its edges.
3. The combination of a shelf forming part of a set of telephone apparatus, and a clip the ends of which hook under the edges of said shelf, and are provided with screws adapted to secure said clip to said shelf, whereby memorandunrblanks may be readily clamped in position, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto setmy hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 15th day of January, A. I). 1884:.
. JAMES F. GILLILAND. [L. s.]
In presence of E. W. BRADFORD, CHAS. L. TI-IURBER.
