Be it known that I, HORACE P. CHAPMAN, of Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Im- 5 provement in Flour-Packers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to an improvement in that class of flourpackers which are provided with a movable p1atform on which the barrel, sack, or other receptacle to be filled is placed, and which have suitable mechanism whereby the flour is forced into the barrel or other receptacle which is placed upon the platform, the latter desce11ding gradually in the same measure as the receptacle thereon becomes filled. chines are provided also with mechanism whereby the descent of the platform is arrested when the desired quantity of material has been placed in the receptacle, and in order to make the machine sensitive, so that neither more nor less than the proper quantity of ma terial is packed into the receptacle it is important that all parts should move with as 2 5 little friction as possible. The movable platform upon which the receptacle is placed overhangs the vertical ways in which it moves on one side, and has, therefore, a tendency to bind in these ways, which materially interferes with the free movements of the platform, and consequently with the automatic action of the machine.
The object of my invention is to remedy this difficulty; and it consists in providing the platform with rollers which bear against the ways in which it moves, and whereby the frietion of the parts is greatly reduced, also of the particular arrangement of the rollers with reference to the platform and its ways, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a flour-packer provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 1s a side elevation, on an enlarged scale, of the movable platform and its ways. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, on an enlarged scale, in liner :0, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a front view of the platform.

stationary feed-tube through which the flour is conducted from the hopper A to the barrel, bag, or other receptacle placed on the movable platform 0. d is the vertical shaft, to the lower end of which is attached the screw, 5 whereby the material is packed. All of these parts are constructed and operated in any suit- E represents a front post, and E a rear post, both constituting one of the side frames of the machine, and secured with their upper ends to a cap, F, and with their lower ends to a base-piece, G.
H H represent upright side pieces secured to the platform 0 and fitted between the posts E E to slide between the same. The uprights H are connected near their upper ends by a cross-piece, I, which is connected by one or more chains, i, with a horizontal shaft, j.

K K represent rollers or pulleys secured to the upright side pieces, H, respectively, near their upper and-lower ends, so as to bear against the posts E E at the points where the side pieces, H, would be pressed against the same by the overhanging weight of the platform and the load placed thereon, if these rollers were not provided.
As shown in the drawings, the upper rollers, K, are arranged on the front sides of the side pieces, H, so as to bear against the rear sides of the front posts, E, and the lower rollers, K, are arranged on the rear sides of the 8 5 side pieces, H, to bear against the front sides of the rear posts, E. The inner faces of the posts E E are preferably provided with metallic rails Z, on which the rollers K K run, and whereby the frictional resistance of the 0 platform is still further reduced and the rollers are prevented from cutting into the posts.
As shown in the drawings, the rollers K K are arranged in recesses m, formed, respectively, in the front and rear sides of the 95 side pieces, H, of the platform, whereby the rollers are protected against contact with other moving parts or objects, and the structure is rendered very compact. The combination, with-the upright posts of a flour-packer, of a movable platform havin u ri ht side ieces slidin between said O p b p b posts, and provided with rollers arranged in recesses formed, respectively, in the front and rear sides of the side pieces of the platform, and adapted to travel vertically 011 the posts of the machine, substantially as set forth.
