GOLDMAN POSITIONING SWIVEL FOR REVOLVER HOLSTERS 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed March 8, 1963 32 I'NVENTOR Unite States arent C) 3,117,768 PSSTONING SWlVEL FOR REVGLVER HOLSTERS Isidore Goldman, 1814i Loring Place S., Bronx S3, N.Y. Filed Mar. 8, 1963, Ser. No. 263,879 10 Claims. (Cl. 224-2) This invention relates to a holster of the swingable type, and more particularly concerns a swivel mounting structure for limiting swinging of the holster through a predetermined angle.
lt has been conventional heretofore to provide a holster with a swivel mounting so that the holster pivots to permit a person carrying the same to sit, stand, run and move about in comfort without interference. lt has been found in practice that if the holster being worn by a person, pivots or swings through a very large angle, the revolver carried thereby may drop out of the holster or may be accidentally discharged, with most unfortunate consequences to the wearer or bystanders.
It is therefore a principal object of the invention to provide a swivel mounting assembly for a holster which imits the holster to pivotal movement tluough a limited predetermined angle.
A further object is to provide a swivel mounting assembly as described wherein two mutually rotatable opposing parts are provided with projections located to engage abutments on the opposite parts respectively.
Another object is to provide a holster with a swivel mounting assembly in which the holster is freely swingable through a predetermined angle from a free hanging vertical position and which is li'nited to pivoting to predetermined forward and rearward positions.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forti.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
FIG. 1 is a side elevational view ot a holster embodying the invention.
FlGS. 2 and 3 are sectional views taken on lines 2 2 and 3 3 of FIG. l.
FIG. 4 is an oblique side View of the holster shown in different positions by solid and dotted lines.
FIG. 5 is an exploded perspective view of parts of the swivel mounting assembly and holster.
FIG. 6 is an exploded perspective view similar to a portion of FIG. 5, showing another swivel mounting assembly construction.
FIG. 7 is a perspective View of a swivel mounting member according to a modification of the invention.
FG. 8 is a sectional View similar to a portion of FIG. 3, showing swivel mounting members constructed as in FIG. 7.
FG. 9 is a sectional view similar to FiG. 8 showing another swivel mounting assembly construction.
Referring iirst to llGS. 1-5, there is shown a holster 10 having a tapered hollow body with open flaring top for receiving and supporting a revolver or pistol. he holster body has a side wall il with an upper side wall extension l2 to which is pivotally attached abutting walls of a strap loop 34. This loop can be engaged upon a horizontal strap or belt S normally encircling the waist of a person carrying the holster. The holster body is pivotally secured to the strap loop i4 by a swivel mounting assembly Ztl shown to best advantage in FEGS. 2-5.
The assembly includes an end closure 22 having a circular head 2d with rounded, smooth periphery. A central shank 23 extends axially to the plane of the head Mice 2d through registering holes 2d and 28 in the holster side wall extension l2 and walls l5 of loop ld. A lirst thin disk 30 is interposed between the head 24 and side extension 12. This disk has circumferentially spaced teeth or projections 32 which are pressed into the outer surface of the holster side wall extension l2. A pair of slots or recesses 34' may be formed in the opposite surface of wall extension ft2 for receiving two lugs 36 of swivel member 3S.
Swivel member 38 is generally circular in form and the lugs 36 are disposed tangentially to the periphery 37 of the member and extend axially to the plane of member 38. The lugs are in diametrically opposite positions and the recesses 3d are correspondingly positioned in holster wall extension l2. An arcuate cutout 35 is provided in the periphery of the member 3S to define two radial abutments 39 disposed about 150 ot arc apart. A projection is located midway between the abutments 39, being spaced on each side about from each of the abutmcnts. The projection 40 is located radially Aetween central hole 42 and periphery 37 of the swivel member.
Another swivel member 3321 is provided for the assembly Ztl. This member is identical in structure to men ber 33 with two lugs 36a, cutout 35a, abutments 39a, hole 42a, and projection 463 all arranged as described in connection with member The two members 33, 38a face each other baclr to back so that projection d of member 3d is located between abutments 39a of niember 33a and projection 40a of member is located between abutments 39 of member 38. The shank 23 extends through aligned holes 42, 42a as well as through hole 3l in disk Sli.
lsugs S are disposed in diametrically opposed positions and engage in recesses 34@ formed in side wall l5 of loop i4. Shank 23 extends through hole 2d in walls 15 and through a hole 31s in another disk 30e. Disk Sile has circumferentially spaced teeth or projections 32EL which engage in the adjacent surface of a wall l5. A large flat circular washer 45 fits on shanhr 23 and abuis the flat side of disk 3W opposite teeth 32a.
A locking disk or washer 46 is applied against washer 45. The end 23 of shank 23 extends through hole 47 in washer 455 and hole 49 in washer t. End 23 may be peened, spun, or spread to form a head 23a shown in FIGS. 2 and 3. A flap Sli may be secured by stitching 5l to the loop le to serve as a protection means on the outer side of the loop.
FIG. 1 shows the holster :lil hanging freely in a vertical position from the strap loop 14 which is engaged on iorizontal belt or strap S. FG. 4 shows the angular range l through which the holster body can be pivoted or swung. The holster body pivots or swings between. a rearward position PR and a forward position PF, through vertical position PV, the latter two positions being shown in dotted lines. The total angle of pivotal movement is about which is the limit of angular movement or" each projection 4@ and lila with respect to abutments 39a, 39, respectively. When projection 46 engages a forward abutment 3% of member 33e-,projection engages a rearward abutment 39 of member 33, and vice versa. The swivel mounting assembly is thus positively stopped by engagement of two projections on two angularly spaced abutments on the opposing members.
FlG. 6 shows a modification of the swivel mount'fig assembly in which swivel members 38 and 38 have radially disposed lugs 3e disposed in diametral alignment and struck outward axially oi the members. These lugs engage in corresponding aligned recesses or slots. 3d', 34:" formed in the holster wall extension 12' and wall i5 of strap loop i4'.
FIG. 7 and FlG. S show swivel members 53h and 32h provided with diametrically opposed studs Sd which extend outwardly of the planes of the members and integrally therewith. Outer ends of the studs are formed with heads 55, 55' to engage the holster wall extension Za and strap loop wall a. The stu-:ls pass through holes 56, 57 in the wall extension l2a and wall 15a, respectively.
FIG. 9 shows swivel members 33, 38C provided with holes 58, 58 in which are engaged heads of rivets 60, 62. The rivets have outer heads 64, 64' engaged in holster wall extension 12b and strap loop wall 15b, respectively. Other parts of the assemblies of FIGS. 6 9 corresponding to those of assembly 2li of FIGS. 1-5 are identically numbered.
There has thus been provided a swingable holster with a swivel mounting which permits yfree rotation of the holster between predetermined forward and rearward angular positions. The holster pivots to per-mit the user or wearer to sit, stand, run or otherwise move about without interference while the revolver or pistol remains securely held in the holster and is prevented from falling out and from accidental discharge.
The swivel assembly is readily and easily put together as is apparent from an inspection of FIG. 5. ylf desired, the free end of shank 23 can be threaded and hole 49 in lwasher 46 can be internally threaded to serve as a nut` However, in general it is Ipreferred that the washer 45 be permanently attached to shank 23 by fonming head 23a on the end of shank 23.
