To al?, whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. DALToN, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at Waterford, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Shortening and Cutting Screw-Threads upon Axle-Spindles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompaio nying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction ot' tools for shortening and cutting additional screw-threads upon axlespindles, to compensate for the wear of the boxes.
The object of my invention is to furnish a simple and inexpensive tool to be employed upon any-sized spindle; and the invention consists in certain features of construction 2o hereinafterdescribed, and specifically set forth in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a front view of the tool. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section, upon a larger scale, of the central portion of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line .r .r of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the cutters. Fig. is a perspective view of both cutters placed `in juxtaposition, but removed from the stock.

A represents a metal frame or stock con- 3 5 structed with a central opening to receive a pair of cutters, B, of peculiar construction. Projecting from the longitudinal walls of said openings are central ribs or lugs, a, to support and guide the cutters placed thereon;
4o and to permit said cutters to be received within the central opening of the stock a groove, a, is cut within one of the walls of said opening. The cutters B are grooved longitudinally at b on their sides to ride upon the rib a of the stock. The face of the cutters is also grooved longitudinally at Zf" to forni cutting-teeth l 2 on the edge ot' said groove, and t0 produce cutting teeth or edges of any desired length the face of each of the 5o teeth is relieved or beveled away from the point or cutting-edge of the teeth in such a manner as not to interfere with each other. The highest part of the tooth l is along the edge ot' the groove b2, while the highest part of the tooth 2 is along the edge b3, upon which 55 two pairs of teeth will meet when forced close together.
Alongside the cutters B are placed the screwcutting dies L C It. The screw-die L carries one-halt ot' a left-hand thread-cutting nut. 6o The screw-die E carries one-half of a rightliand thread-cutting nut, and the screw-die C carries one-half of a right-hand nut on one side and one-half of a left-hand nut on the other. These screw cutting dies, and also the cutters B, are retained tightly together by means of the screw on the handle B'l ot' the stock. By unscrewing said handle the threadcutting opening between the dies L, C, and E, and also the opening b between the pairs 7o of cutters B, can be made of any desired size to suit the different diameters of the axles. This hole b4 is made conical, to prevent its walls coming in contact with or burring the thread on the screw at any point except at the cutting-edge forming the collar upon the axle-spindle.
In operation the nut is first removed from the end of the axle, Fig. 6, the cutters B are adjusted to the diameter ot' the screw di, and 8O brought close to the shoulder di on said axle. The nut d is then replaced against the back of the cutters. Then by revolving the stock A, and at the saine time tightening up the nut d as fast as the tool cuts off the metal, a proper length is given to the axle. The tool is then removed therefrom, and the screwcutting dies R or L (right or left) are applied and made to eut as much thread on the axle as the cutters had removed of metal from the 9o shoulder d, and the wheel can be .replaced on the axle.
Having now fully described my invention and its operation, I claiml.
