Description

24, 1963 F. w. HAMILTON AIR FILTER T0 CARBURETOR ATTACHING MEANS Filed Nov. 4, 1960 IN VEN TOR.
17770 FIVE/5'.
United States Patent Ofiice Patented Dec. 2%, 19%3 3,115,462 AER FTLTER T CAREURETUR ATTAQHHNG MEANS Francis W. Hamilton, Southfield, Mich, assignor to Chrysler Eorporation, Paris, Mich, a corporation of Delaware Filed Nov. 4, 1960, Eer. No. 67,155 2 Clm'ms. (El. 55--5@5) This invention relates to improvements in devices for connecting air filters to the carburetor inlets of internal combustion engines.
Heretofore various means have been employed to make this attachment such as wire bales extending through the sides of the carburetor inlet or riveted thereto and connected to the air filter, and also by relatively small pins extending through portions of the carburetor inlet and securing thereto various filter attaching means. These devices have not proven entirely satisfactory in that the carburetor inlet is generally a zinc die casting which is relatively soft metal and which does not have suficient strength to prevent tearing loose of these bales and pins when the vehicle is driven over rough terrain and the air filter is subjected to excessive vibrations and forces tending to lift it from the carburetor inlet.
The present invention obviates these difficulties by providing sur'licient bearing area on the carburetor inlet for a single tubular or solid anchor bar extending across the carburetor inlet and fixed in apertures in the sides thereof, the diameter of the bar being sufiicient to provide adequate bearing surface in said apertures in the carburetor inlet to prevent tearing of the die casting.
Another advantage of applicants invention is that the anchor bar is relieved of excessive local stress tending to pull its ends inwardly of the inlet side walls. This is accomplished by the provision of a U-shaped element within the carburetor inlet wrapped around the bar along practically its entire length and having secured thereto an upstanding stud or nut to which the air filter is threadedly secured.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following description and drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 represents a cross-sectional view of a typical air filter and carburetor inlet utilizing applicants attaching device;
FIGURE 2 represents a cross-sectional view of FIG- URE 1 taken along the line 2-2 thereof in the direction of the arrows;
FIGURE 3 represents a view looking into the inlet of the carburetor from above with the attaching device removed;
FIGURE 4 presents an isometric view of the U-shaped element of the attaching device; and
FIGURE 5 represents a cross-sectional view of the variation of the crossbar of FIGURES 1 through 3.
Referring to the drawings, an air filter housing generally designated 19 is provided with a tubular outlet portion 12 which fits over the inlet 14 of a typical downdraft carburetor. The outlet 12 bottoms out against a shoulder 16 of said carburetor inlet. Inlet 114 is provided at opposite sides with a pair of outwardly flared apertures 18 which receive the ends 20 in an anchor bar 22 to lock the same in place after said ends have also been flared to fit the flared apertures 13. A U-shaped element 24 receives crossbar 22 and is nested in U-shaped slots 26 in embossments 27 on the inlet Wall adjacent the apertures 18. This U-shaped element is welded or otherwise secured to a stud 28 which may extend all the way through the filter element to receive a cap nut or may threadedly receive an elongated type of nut as shown in FIGURE 1 depending upon engineering design. The U-shaped member may alternatively be provided with a nut and be secured to the filter 1% by a bolt in the same manner as elongated nut 30. The anchor bar 22 and U-shaped element may conveniently be of metal or of rigid plastic material depending upon how much force it is to withstand.
in FIGURE 5, the anchor bar 32 is provided with a shoulder 34 at one end so that the bar may be readily positioned in the inlet. The bar may be secured in position by any means such as staking shown at 36. This structure further simplifies the installation by eliminating the flaring operations.
I claim:
1. Means for attaching an air filter to the air inlet housing of a carburetor, a pair of substantially diametrically opposed embossments of said inlet housing, each embossment having an axial slot therein opening upstream and radially inwardly with respect to said inlet housing and also having a radial aperture extending from within the slot through the sidewall of said housing, each embossment providing a base for its slot at the downstream end thereof, a member adapted to span said inlet housing having a channel therein registering with said apertures and having a bottom wall supported at its opposite ends on said embossments at the base of each slot, the channel sides of said member at said opposite ends being confined Within said slots respectively, an anchor bar having end portions engaged in said apertures and a lower surface portion engaging said bottom wall of said channel, cooperating means on said inlet housing and said anchor bar for locking said bar therein, and means extending into said channel and secured to said member for removably attaching said fi ter to said carburetor, the last named means having an extremity spaced from and opposed to said bottom wall of said channel for engaging said anchor bar at a location opposite from said lower surface portion thereof.
2. Means for attaching an air filter to the air inlet housing of a carburetor, a pair of substantially diametrically opposed embossments of said inlet housing, each embossment having an axial slot therein opening upstream and radially inwardly with respect to said housing and also having a radial aperture extending from within the slot through the sidewall of said housing, a substantially U-shaped element having a passage registering with said apertures and having side portions confined at its opposite ends within said slots, and anchor bar means adapted to span the inlet of said carburetor and extending through said passage of said U-shaped element, said U-shaped element having a yoke portion engaging the downstream side of said anchor means, cooperating means on said inlet housing and the ends of said bar means to lock them together, and means rigidly secured to said U-shaped element and extending upstream therefrom for removably attaching said filter to said carburetor, the last mentioned means having an abutment surface spaced from and 0pposed to said yoke portion of said U-shaped element for engagement with the opposite side of said anchor bar means.
