Application filed March 14, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WAsnIwe'roN LARAWAY, of the city and county of Hartford, in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machinery for Drying Drums or Barrel-Bodies Made of Pa per-Pulp Molded into Proper Form; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a top view and horizontal section of certain parts of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse and verti cal section of it, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation, and Fig. 4 an end View, of the hydraulic press and certain of its appliances, to be described. Fig. 5 is a side view of one of the bars for connecting the hydraulic press with the machine-frame. Fig. 6 is a vertical sec-' tion, and Fig. 7 is a horizontal section. on an enlarged scale, of the internal series of vous soirs and certain of the parts adjacent thereto. Fig. 8 is an outer side View of one of the internal voussoirs,to be described. Fig. 9 is hereinafter described.
\Vith this machine a drum or barrelbody composed of paper-pulp in a wet state, and encompassing the internal series of voussoirs,
may be desiccated. Inthe drawings such body is shown in section at a, and its supporting series of voussoirs at A, the body having been molded on the said voussoirs by a suitable ma chine. The said body and its supporting series of voussoirs are placed in the space between the outer series of chambered voussoirs, B, and the supporter G, such outer series being concentric with the supporter G of the internal series, the voussoirs of each series being disposed with each other, like those of a circular arch or the staves of a barrel. Each voussoir has one or more chambers or channels, a, extending lengthwise through it, and opening into a chambered cap or cover, 0, and a chambered base or bottom, I). The two sets of voussoirs are arranged in a frame, E, in a conical mouth in the top plate, I), of which the cap 0 is fitted. The chamber 9 of the cap 0 is circular and shaped in diametric section, as represented, and the said cap 0 is removable from the frame, which is furnished with a crane, F, for accomplishing such removal by means of a rope, h.
Each internal Voussoir (No model.)
has extending inward from it two flanges, i, (see Figs. 1, 2, 6, and 7,) whose inner edges are straight, and there is within the space encompassed by the series of internal voussoirs what I term their supporter G, which in this case is a strong drum or chambered cylinder or conic frustum slightly tapering from its lower end upward. It is fastened to or in one piece with the base D, and projects upward therefrom, as represented. In the central part of its upper end or head is a tapering mouth. 7;, to receive a corresponding tapering projection, Z, extending down from the cap 0. Through the said projection and the bottom of the said cap is a passage, 0?, by which communication between the drum G and the chamber in the cap 0 is bad, the said chamber, by means of educts L, opening into the channels a of the several voussoirs of the outer series, such channels at their lower ends opening by passages a into the annular chamber of the base D.
In the upper part of the supporter G are passages d, leading from its internal space into the channels a of the several internal voussoirs, such channels at their lower ends communicating by passages c in the base D with the annular chamber thereof. An induct, X, for conveyance of hot airinto the supporter G,opens into the bottom thereof, and there extends from the chamber of the base D an educt, y, for the discharge of such air from such chamber. The cap 0, I usually apply to the inner set of voussoirs by some suitable means by which such cap can be readily con nected to the said voussoirs, so as to enable them,with a barrel-body on them, to be raised upward relatively to and off the supporter G by lifting the cap by means hereinafter described. For this purpose there may extend upward from each voussoir of the set a short lug, f, bent at a right angle. To receive such lug, there may be in the cap 0 a chamber, 9 having an opening, h, wide enough for the lug to pass through, all being as sh own in Fig. 9, which is a vertical section of the latchingchamber and lug. The inner set of voussoirs are hinged together, as shown at t in Figs. 6 and 7, but two of them at the joint are formed so as to admit one of them when all of the set are off the supporter G, to be turned in a manner to enable all of them to be drawn in sufficiently for the removal from them of a barrel body. Each internal voussoir-has in its outer surface a series of grooves,\7c arranged obliquely to its longitudinal median line, in manner as shown in Fig. 8, and covering these grooves is a foraminous plate, Z against the outer surface of which the barrelbody is to bear. By means of such plate and grooves the water expressed from the pulp will be driven into grooves m" at thejoints of the voussoirs, and thence properly out of the machine. The outer set of voussoirshas mechanism for moving each of its'voussoirs relatively, and in a radial direction to the axis of the supporter G. This mechanism consists of a stout metallicring, H, and a series of toggles, I, in number corresponding to that of the set of voussoirs. Each voussoir has a togglejointed to it, and to an adjustable box, K, duly supported by the ring and resting against a wedge, L, disposed between such box and the inner periphery of the ring. Ascrew, m, projects from the box through an car, a, ex tending from the wedge,a nut,0,being screwed on the screw. By means of such nut and screw the wedge can be driven forward as occasion may require, for adjusting the connected voussoir for its proper action on the barrel-body. The ring H rests on a series of anti-friction rollers,N,arr-anged in the frame E. At its outer periphery such ring bears against another series of friction-rollers, M, arranged in said frame, each of such friction-rollers being supported in a suitable carrier, 0, between which and the frame there is awedge, P, for moving the carrier, to'cause its roller to properly bearperipherally on the ring. By partially revolving the ring the several voussoirs of the outer set will be simultaneously moved outward in radial directions, a counter movement of the ring producing inward movements of the voussoirs. For moving the said ring in the manner as explained, I employ one or more hydraulic presses, the cylinder and piston of one of which are represented in the drawings, in which R is the cylinder and S the piston. Two connection-bars, T, jointed to the ring extend from it to and are fastened to a crosshead, U, fixed to the piston-rod. Furthermore, the cylinder R has trunnions r extending from it into bearings in two bars, V, projecting from the frame E, the lower bar being supported beneath the cylinder by a pedestal, W. 0n heated air being driven into the supporter G such air will pass therefrom through the cap 0 and the several voussoirs of the two series, and thence into and out of the base D,whereby the voussoirs will be heated, and the barrel-body between the two sets of voussoirs will be desiccated after it may have been duly compressed. The barrel-body having been formed of paper or wood pulp by a suitable press or machine, and upon the inner of the two sets of voussoirs,is to be put in con nection with the cap 0, and with such is to be lowered into the machine, so as to surround the supporter G, the voussoirs of the outer set having been previously retracted. This having been accomplished,the ring is to be gradually revolved, so as to force the outer set of voussoirs firmly up to the barrel-body, after which hot air is to be let or driven through the supporter G, the cap 0, the voussoirs, and the base D,,the moisture of desiccation escaping as it may be extracted or expelled from the barrel-body.
In the machine as described the principal novel feature is the stationary supporter G and base D and the movable cap, and the series of internal voussoirs applied so as to be movable with the cap with respect to the said supporter, in manner as set forth.
I do not herein claim in the described machine the combination of the rotary ring and its series of toggles with the supporting-frame of such ring and with the two series of chambered voussoirs and their chambered cap and base; nor do I herein claim, in combination therewith, a movable supporter composed of a tube and a series of disks, as shown in an application for a patent recently filed by me.
Instead 'of having each internal voussoir grooved or channeled on its outer surface, as described, I sometimes make the grooves or channels in the side of the foraminous plate Z, or partly in such and partly in thevoussoir. The holes in the plate l may be cylindrical or conical, or of any other proper form.
I claim in such machine 1. The combination of the stationary and chambered supporter G, provided with an induct and educts, as described, with the two series of chambered voussoirs and their chambered cap 0 and base D, the external series of voussoirs having mechanism for operating them, as set forth.
2. In a machine essentially and for the pur-- pose as described, the combination of the inner voussoirs provided with grooves extending lengthwise therein, and also with others opening into such longitudinal grooves and inclined upward therefrom, with foraminous plates arranged against the voussoirs and covering their grooves, all being substantially as set forth.
