CHARLES S. VESTBROOK, OF SPRAGUEVILLE, NEV YORK.
CHUCK FOR ROCKDRILLS.
SPECIIECATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,396, dated January 27, 1885.
Application filed July 3, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. Wnsr- BRooi, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Spragueville, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Chucks forRock-Drills; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying' drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved drill-chuck, showing` a portion of the piston-rod and of the drill-shank. Fig. 2 is longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section; and Fig. 4 is a View of the several parts separated.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
My invention has relation to chucks for securing drill-bits in the end of the piston-rod of a rock-drill, or for similar purposes, and more particularly to that class of such chucks in which the drill-bit is automatically centered in the hollow end of the piston-rod, when it is fastened in the same by means of the chuck; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the piston-rod, which may belong to any approved construction of rock-drill, and which has an axial bore or recess, B, in its outer end, which bore is transversed near the end by two longitudinal and diainetricallyopposite slots, O C, passing through the sides of the bore, into which slots two blocks, D and E, fit and slide, which blocks are formed with concave cylindrical inner faces, F, concentric with the bore in the piston-rod, and which blocks are thicker than the sides of the bore in the piston-rod, so that their sides will project beyond the surfaces of the bore and of the pistonrod. One, D, of the blocks has a transverse notch or recess,G, in its outer side, at or near the middle of the same.
H is a sleeve itting freely around the outer end of the piston-rod, and having a web or longitudinal enlargement, I, `at one side, and
extending down to the slot.
(No model.)
having a longitudinal groove, J, in its bore or perforation at the inner side of this web, and the said web has a transverse slot or rectangular perforation, K, crossing the groove in the inner side cf the sleeve, which said slot or perforation is slightly tapering, and in which slot a tapering key, L fits, which key may, if desired, be secured by a set-screw, M, passing th rough a threaded perforation, N, in the web, It will now be seen that when the drill-shank is inserted into the bore in the end of the piston-rod the concave cylindrical surfaces of the blocks will bear against the sides of the shank, and by thereupon forcing the key into the slot, the said key fitting with its inner side in the transverse notch in the outer face of one of the blocks, the key will force the said block to bear against the shank, and the sleeve iitting loosely upon the end of the pistcn-rod, the said sleeve will also be drawn in a direction opposite to the direction in which the block is driven, and bear against the outer side of the other block, forcing it inward, the action of the key in this manner drawing the blocks equally toward the center of thew bore in the piston-rod, and thus centering the drillshank while securing it. The key ruiming transversely to the direction of the blow ofthe pistonrod ,it will not be liable to become loosened while the drill is operated, and the setscrew will keep the key securely in place,
where the screw is used, and if by accident the key should become loosened during work the wide end of the same will be openly eX- posed while the piston-rod is revolved and reciprocated, so that the operator may secure the wedge or key by a tap of a hammer in a more convenient manner than in drill-chucks in which the drill-shank is secured by means of wedges or keys inserted in the direction of the blow. i
If desired, the key or wedge may be dispensed with, and the screw passing through the perforation in the web be brought to bear against the outer side of one of the blocks, when it will operate in exactly the same manner as the wedge, and the chuck may be subjected to similar minor changes without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention@ claim IOO and desire to secure by Letters Patent of 4the United States- 1. The combination of a piston-rod having a bore or perforation in its outer end formed with radial longitudinal slots in the sides of the bore, blocks fitting in the said slots, havy ing concave cylindrical inner sid es and thicker than the walls ofthe bore, projecting upon both sides of the same, a sleeve fitting loosely around the end of the piston-rod around the outer sides of the blocks, and means, substantially as described, for forcing one block inward and for causing the sleeve to force the diametrically-opposite block inward, as and for thev purpose shown and set forth.
2. rlhe combination of a piston-rod having a bore or recess in its outer end, formed with radial longitudinal slots in the sides of the bore, blocks having concave cylindrical inner faces fitting in thesaid slots and proj ectingupon both sides of the same, a sleeve fitting loosely around the end of the pistou-rod and around the outer sides of the' blocks, having a longitudinal web orenlargement at one side, and having a transverse slot or perforation through the said web, communicating at its middle with the bore or perforation of the sleeve, and a key or wedge tting in the said perforation and bearing with its inner side against one of the blocks, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3. `Ihe combination of a piston-rod having a bore or recess in its outer end, :formed with diametrically opposite longitudinal slots in the sides of the bore, blocks fitting in the said slots, having their inner faces concave and cylindrical, and projecting with their inner and outer sides at both sides of the walls of the bore, one of the said blockshaving atransverse notch or groove in its outer face, a sleeve fitting loosely around the end of the piston-rod and around the outer sides ofthe blocks, having a longitudinal web or enlargement at one side, having a longitudinal groove in the side of its boreupon the inner side of the web, and having a transverseslot or perforation intersecting the said longitudinal groove, and a wedge or key fitting in the slot, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
4. The combination of a piston-rod having a bore or recess in its outer end, formed with lupon the inner side ofthe web', having a transverse slot or perforation intersecting the said longitudinal groove, and having a threaded perforation opening` into the said slot, a wedge or key fitting in the slot or perforation, and a set screw fitting in the threaded perforation, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I liave'hereunto' affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES S. VVESIBROOK.
