To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD Gr. OLDEIELD, of Bordentown, in the county of Burlington and State of New J er'sey, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Machines for Making Brick, Tiles, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the nature of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure l, is a plan of my improved press, and Fig. 2, is a vertical section at the line m.

The nature of the said invention consists in a series of propeller blades acting to force the clay through a contracting duct whereby the mass is consolidated and passed out through a die of the shape to be given the tile, brick, or other article, and while passing out of said die the clay is 1lubricated byl the application of water or any coloring liquid. By this means I am enabled to use clay of the usual consistence as dug from the ground without mixing the same with water although I am not limited in this particular but can use clay of more or less plasticity.

is the main shaft, geared by the wheels c, and CZ, to the counter shaft e, that is provided with the stirrers f inside the hopper vg, by meansl of which the clay supplied to the said hopper g is mixed and caused to pass to the machine.

The cylinder 71 is vprovided with slots receiving the istons or propellers z', z', that are connected by the links 7c, 7c, to the fixed stud Z, which is eccentric to the shaft so that as the drum 7L, is revolved by the shaft Z), and

These propellers are projected and retracted by the stud Z, as represented and in their movement they take the clay in the hopper g and force the same through the duct m, which consolidates the clay as carried through said duct in consequence of the tapering form and the clay thoroughly con- 31,126, dated January 15, 1861.

To prevent rupture to the duct m, in consequence of any stone or unusual pressure I make use of the safety plate n, kept'down by the strut o, lever p and weight Q, and to insure the accurate and uniform movement of the clay in passing through the die s, I make use of the air vessel t, in which the pressure makes the clay rise and the confined air causes the delivery of clay from the die`r tofbe as uniform as possible.

u, u, are rollers acting above and below the clay in the die e, to slightly compress the same and cause it to move freely, and these rollers are driven by gearing and a belt w. o, is a watertight casing surrounding the rollers w and die s, and when water is introduced into this casing it lubricates the surface of the clay rendering it much smoother. And if desired metallic oXids or other coloring matter may be applied to the surface of the clay by these rollers u, u.

The-operation of this press as a whole will be apparent from the foregoing, and it will be seen that I am enabled to work my clay much stiffer than heretofore usual, hence there will be less shrinkage, and the articles produced will be much more uniform and perfect.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The propellers` i, z', traveling in the tapering duct m, in the manner specified to compress and consolidate the clay as set forth.
