UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS KIRK, 0F READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
BRICK-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,997, dated January 31, 1860.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnwis KIRK, of the city of Reading, county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brick Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description there` of, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal elevated section and Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional detailed views thereof.
A, forms the base thereof to which the side frames B, B, are secured by means of bolts l, 1.
C, is a vibrating press lever which is operated by means of the cams E and has its center of motion by means of the bolt 2 which passes through the end thereof and side frames B, B, and is furnished with a lubricating pan D, for lubricating the cams E, and F.
Gr Gr, are connecting rods attached to the ends of the cross head I-I, and the vibrating press lever C, by means of bolts 3. The press is elevated by means of spring I which is secured to the base A, by means of screws or bolts.4
J, is a cam shaft to which the cams E, and F, are forged solid and has bearings in j ournal boxes, 4:, on side frames B B.

N is a band wheel or pulley secured to shaft M to which the power is applied for operating the machine.
O is a vibrating lever which is operated by the center cam F, and has its center of motion by means of a bolt G, passing through the end and the side frames B, B.
P is the brick forming plunger which is attached to the vibrating lever O, by means of the link Q and pins 7, 7.
R, is a cam shaft furnished with a cam S, revolving within the cam frame T by which means a reciprocating motion is imparted to the double mold U.
V, V, V, V, are miter gearings secured to cam shaft J, shaft IV and cam shaft R, by which means motion is given to the cam shaft R, which has bearings in journal boxes on side frames B B.
X, X, are brackets or bearings secured to the side frame B, in which shaft IV revolves.
Y, Y, are guides secured within side frames B, B in which the cam frame T, slides.
Z is a brace firmly secured within side frames B, B, through which the adjustable clay gage screw a passes.
cl, d, are brackets on the frames B, B, upon which the lower end of the discharge plunger c, rests while the press is operating.
t is an adjustable screw in the lower end of plunger c, by which the plunger is raised by lever O, to its proper height.
e, represents the plunger boxes which are firmly secured together by bolts 8, 8, and is secured within the side frames B, B.
f, is a frame secured to the plunger box by means of bolts 8, and may be extended to any desirable length in which the rollers g, g, revolve.
z, is an endless apron passing around the rollers by which means the bricks are conveyed from the machine. Motion is imparted to the apron by means of the belt 9, passing around the fpulley on the end of roller g, and cam sha t R.
m and n are adjustable gibs and keys by which the reciprocating mold U, may readily be adjusted. The reciprocating mold U, is constructed in parts which are firmly secured together by means of eye bolts s, s, which also forms the joint and connection with the cam frame T, by means of the bolt 0.
z' is a small square box furnished with a piston j, and works within the mold U and has a projecting flange around the top which when pressed down as represented in Fig. 3, rests upon the top edge of the mold U, and the under surfaces thereof are level with the under surface of the reciprocating mold U. The square box z' has depressions at the ends on top which allows it to be pressed up farther than the piston j when both box and piston are pressed against the guards or hooks p, p, by which means the first formation leaves a flange around the top of the brick as represented at y, y.

m and a, form adouble hopper by which means two kinds of clay may be used separately at the same time.
U is a flexible gum or leather hose secured to hopper a and filling box w, through which the clay passes from the hopper and a, into the filling box W. The clay is introduced into the hoppers and z, and passes down through the flexible hose into the filling box W, and at each forward stroke of the reciprocating mold the clay passes into the back plunger box e, whereon the mold is brought on the back center by the revolving cam S, on shaft R, and the plungers P and c are forced up by means of link bolt t, vibrating lever O, and cam F, by the operation of which the brick is pressed up into the mold U, and is formed with the flange around the top as represented at y, by means Y of the flanged box i and piston j within mold U, and the guards or hooks P, whence the mold isy brought forward by cam S, while the plungers P and c remain up, see Fig. 2, when the center cam F releases lever O and cams E, forces down the cross head H by pressed down flush with the under surface of the reciprocating mold U, whereon the brick is perfectly pressed into the front plunger box-e by` means of the plunger 0 resting uponthe" brackets d, d, see Fig. 3,
' the cams E, at the same time release the vibrating press lever C, by which the crossinto the mold -as represented at y, Fig. 4,
whence the mold comes forward andslides the pressed brick olf of the end of the delivering plunger c onto the traveling apron 71. by which means the brick may be conveyed to any desirable distance, the adjustable screw in brace Z can be readily adjusted while the machine is in operation to suit different quantities and qualities of clay.
Y What I claim as my invention and desire z to secure by Letters Patent isl. The double hoppers and a in combination with'the flexible hose o, when constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
2. I also claim the flanged box z' and piston j in combination with the reciprocating mold U, and crosshead H when constructed, arranged and operatedY as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
