S. COX.
HORSE POWER.
4 No. 311,233. Patented Jan. 27, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL COX, OF BOONEVILLE, MISSISSIPPI.
HORSE-POWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,233, dated January 27, 1885.
Application filed November 22, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL Cox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Booneville, in the county of Prentiss and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Horse-Powers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to horse-powers; and
it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. In the drawings, Figure 1 is a View in perspective of a horse-power embodying my improvements. Fig. 2is a view in perspective, the drivewheel being removed.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A, B, and O designate three fric- QQHDIOH-IOUS, journaled in bearings in posts D D,
on the friction-rolls A, B, and G. The shaft E of one of the friction-rolls is provided with a band-wheel, H, from which the power is transmitted by a belt to the machinery to be driven.
0 horse is hitched to drive the power.
I designates the lever to which the vJ designates the drivers seatorstand, which may be a turn-stool, as shown.
The weight of the drive-wheel regulates the power, therefore the heavier the drive-wheel is made the greater the power obtained to within a reasonable limit.
A horse-power constructed as hereinbefore described is simple, effective in operation, and is not likely to get out of order, owing to the fewness of its parts.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination, with the friction-rolls AB O,journaled in the posts D D, of the drive-wheel F, and the band-Wheel H, substantiall y as specified.
2. The combination, with the friction-rolls A B C, journaled in the posts D D, and hav ing each a larger and a smaller diameter, of the drive-Wheel F,having a peripheral flange, and the band-wheel H,on the shaft of one of the friction'rolls, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL COX.
