(Cl. 70-446) This invention relates to a door lock assembly and more particularly, to an assembly known as a cylindrical lockset. More particularly, this invention relates to a door lock assembly having novel latch bolt retractor actuating means for the outer knob assembly for both key and knob actuation of the latch bolt retractor.
It is an object of this invention to provide a novel outside knob and spindle assembly for actuation of a latch bolt both by normal knob operation and in the dogged condition of the outside spindle assembly by a key operated mechanism. A further object of this invention is the provision in a cylindrical lockset of a novel latch bolt retractor actuator assembly operated by the outside knob thereof whereby there is a novel cooperative relationship between the key controlled retractor actuating mechanism and the assembly used to operate the latch bolt retractor when the outside spindle is in the undogged condition.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide in a cylindrical lockset or like door lock mechanism a latch bolt retractor actuator including spaced retractor actuating cams or rollback members, one of which cams or rollback members is carried by the outside knob spindle and the other of which members is moveable independently of the said spindle, said rollback members being alternatively effective to withdraw said latch bolt responsive to the direction of rotation of the outside knob, in the undogged condition thereof, said independently moveable rollback member being effective to withdraw said latch bolt when the outside spindle is dogged.
A further object of this invention is to provide a cylindrical lockset having independently rotatable rollback members adapted to act and move together as a unit in the undogged condition of the outside knob assembly, one said rollback member being shiftable to operate the latch bolt retractor independently of the other in the dogged condition of the outer knob.
This invention will be more clearly understood in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

In accordance with the invention, there is provided a lock set 10 including inner and outer latch bolt retractor actuating assemblies 11 and 12 respectively and latch bolt assembly 13. While the latch bolt retractor actuators 11 and 12 in the illustrated embodiment are of the so-called push type wherein the retractive movement of the latch bolt is effected responsive to a movement of knob or lock controlled mechanism toward the door edge, it will R. be readily understood by those skilled in the art that the invention herein may be adapted for use in connection with a draw-type latch bolt retractive mechanism wherein the knob or lock-actuated elements exert a pulling influence on the latch bolt retractor mechanism.
The lock assembly generally includes inner and outer housing portions 20, 21 respectively, secured against the inner and outer faces of the door by means of draw bolts 22, 22 which extend through apertures 24 provided therefor, in the housing and are threaded into complemental posts 25 in the outer housing member 21.
An inner spindle assembly is rotatably mounted in the inner housing portion 20, and comprises a generally tubular spindle member 31, having a parti-cylindrical inner portion 32 formed with rollback portion or members 33 and 34. A lock bar 35 is slidably and rotatably carried within the tubular spindle member 31, the inner end portion 36 thereof extending beyond the inner end 32 of the tubular member. The outer end portion of the lock bar 35 is provided with spaced shoulders 37, 38, and a central outward extending lug 39. A turnbutton cap 41 having a cross plate 41 is secured to the outer end of the lock bar, an aperture 42 being formed in the plate 41 and rotatably receiving the extending lug portion 39, of the lock bar 35. The turnbutton is secured against detachment from the lock bar 35 by side lugs 43', 43 struck up from the extending portion 39 of the lock bar and preventing retraction of the same through aperture 42. The turnbutton assembly 40 includes an inwardly directed generally cup-shaped portion 44 having in a sidewall portion thereof, a bayonet slot 45. In the assembled position of the turnbutton within the spindle 31, the cup-shaped portion 44 is rotatably and slidably received within the outer end of the spindle 31, a struck up follower portion 46 being formed in the wall of spindle 31 and lying within the slot in the cupped portion 44. A latch plate 50 is mounted within the spindle 31, said plate including a normally projecting dog portion 51 which is outwardly biased thru T slot 52 formed in spindle 31 by leaf spring 53 disposed between the spindle 31 and the plate 50. The turnbutton 40 and associated mechanism is normally biased to extend beyond the outer end of spindle 31 by compression spring 54, the ends of which are biased respectively against the plate 50* and against shoulders 55, 56 adjacent the outer end of the lock bar 35. The spindle assembly 31 is maintained against removal in an outward direction from the housing 20 by retainer plate 58 which is supported in slots 59, 60 formed in the spindle 31. A retainer clip 61 may, when plate 58 is thus positioned, be snapped through apertures 62 of the spindle and 63 of the plate 58 to maintain the said plate adjacent to the inner face 64 of the housing 20 to prevent endwise removal of said spindle from said housing. The lock bar 35, and turnbutton assembly carried thereby is secured against removal in an outward direction of the spindle 31 by a locking barb 65 struck from the body of the lock bar 35, a trailing edge portion of which, in the assembled position thereof, lies against the inner face of bracket 67 adjacent to slot 68 formed therein through which the inner portion of the lockbar passes when the same is assembled. As fully set forth in our co-pending application S.N. 828,530, filed July 21, 1959, the bracket 67 may be made of nylon or similar resilient plastic material whereby assembly of lockbar through slot 68 is facilitated, it being necessary under such circumstances merely to thrust the inner end of the lockbar through the said slot 68, the conformation of the barb 65 being such as to permit entry of the lockbar through the slot but to prohibit retraction of the lockbar outwardly of the slot. The inner knob member 70- is provided on its end wall 71, with an aperture 72 through which portions of the turnbutton 40 project, said portions being rotatably and slideably received in said aperture. The knob 70 includes a transverse slot 73 which in the assembled condition of the knob, lies in registry with the slot 52 in the spindle 31, the doggingend 51 of latch plate 50 lying within the slot 73 to secure the knob to the spindle.
The outer latch bolt actuator assembly 12, includes a spindle 80 of generally tubular form and including at its innermost end an arcuate segment 81 having at one side thereof .a single cam or rollback surface 82.
Rotatably received within the inner end of spindle 80 is a key-actuated auxiliary spindle member 83 having a generally cylindrical shank portion 84 and an inwardly extending parti-cylindrical portion 85 having a side edge 86 forming a rollback portion. The opposite side edge 87 of the auxiliary spindle 83 lies against and abuts the longitudinally extending side edge 88 of extending portion 81 of the outer spindle rnember 80 (see FIGURE 3). It will be readily understood that the radius of curvature of the elements 81 and 85 is such that the two, when the edges .87 and 88 abut each other, form a continuous parti-cylindrical surface defined by the aforesaid parts.
A knob retainer plate 90 is transversely shiftably mounted within the spindle 80 within the slots 91, 92, which are diametrically opposed and formed in the said spindle, a leaf spring 93 being interposed between the end 94 of the plate 9.0 and the inner walls of spindle 80, thereby causing the latching or dogging end 95 of the plate 90 normally to project outwardly through slot 92.
The auxiliary spindle 83 is provided with an arcuately extending-slot 89 which last-named slot in the inserted position of spindle 83 in the spindle 80 registers with a complemental slot 96 formed adjacent the innermost tubular portion of said spindle 80.
As best seen in FIGURES 4 and 6, the auxiliary spindle 83 is secured rotatably within the tubular spindle 80 against .endwise removal by a retainer plate 100, which plate additionally functions to carry the dogging plate 101. The dogging plate includes a dogging finger 2 at its lower end and at its upper end, an inwardly disposed head portion 103; the head portion includes a longitudinally extending narrow neck portion 104, the end or side portions of the head 103 being provided with laterally extending ears, 105-, 106. The retainer plate 100 includes a radially extending slot 107 within which neck portion 104 of dogging plate 101 is slidably received, outward movement of dogging plate with respect to the retainer plate 100 being limited by the ears 105, 106. The retainer plate 100 secures the auxiliary spindle 83 rotatably within the spindle '80, said plate being passed through slot 110 in the upper portion of spindle 80 the lower spaced leg portions 111, 112 of said plate being received respectively in slots 96 and 113. It will be understood that the assembly of the dogging plate 101, and the retainer plate 100 must follow the insertion of retainer plate 100 into the spindle 80. It will be further understood that the legs 11 1, 112 of the retainer plate 100, will pass additionally through the slot 89 of the auxiliary spindle 83, limiting movement of the same, with respect to the spindle 80', both inwardly and outwardly, while permitting a range of relative rotary movement. Also, it will be obvious that the relative rotation of the spindle 83,. with respect to spindle 80, will be limited by the engagement of leg 111 of retainer plate 100 with end portion 114 in the slot 89. Before completion of the assembly of the retaining and the dogging plates 100 and 101 respectively, a coil spring 115 is sleeved over the dogging nose portion 102 of the dog 101, said spring serving normally to raise the dog to its upper limiting position as shown in solid lines of FIGURE 2 and maintaining the nose 102 thereof normally biased within the spindle 80. The dogging nose 102 of plate 101 is main tained in registry with dogging slot 116, in spindle 80' and upon application of a downward force 19 the P W1 as hereinafter described, the plate 101 will be shifted downwardly whereby the nose 102 is projected outwardly through and beyond the dogging slot 116.
As best seen in FIGURES 7 and 8, the auxiliary spindle 83 is provided with a transversely extending rear plate having formed therein spaced receiving sockets 121, 122. A spring clip member 123-, when passed through lock aperture 124- of retainer plate 100', secures the retainer plate 100 and, accordingly, the remainder of the mechanism comprising the outer spindle assembly against endwise removal from the housing.
The outer knob assembly includes a knob shell member 1 25, having formed in the .end wall 126 thereof, a central aperture 127. A conventional pin tumbler assembly 128 is carried within the knob 125, the outer-end portion 129 of the plug 130 of said tumbler assembly, being exposed to the exterior of the knob through the aperture 127. The spindle member 80 is slotted longitudinally at 131 to accommodate the laterally, radially extending tumbler housing portion 132 of the tumbler assembly 128. The knob includes on a shank 133 thereof, a latch slot 134, which cooperates in the assemble-d position of the knob on the spindle 80 with latching nose 95 of latch plate 90 against removal of the knob 125.
The inner end of the cylinder plug is provided with a pair of inwardly extending fingers 135, 136 which in the assembled position of the knob on the spindle, extend into socket portions 121 and 122 of the rear plate 120 of the auxiliary spindle 84, to form a rotary driving connection between the plug and said auxiliary spindle.
Latching plates Sit and 90, are provided with enlarged central apertures 140 and 141 respectively to permit the unobstructed passage therethrough of the lockbar 35 and the driver fingers or pins 135, 136 respectively. Similarly, the retainer plate 100 is formed with an enlarged central aperture 142. Retainer plate 5 8 and dogging plate 101 are provided with central apertures 144, 143, respectively, said apertures 143 and 144 being of decreased size, as compared to the apertures 140, 1 41 and 142. The lookbar 35 is provided with a camming portion lying adjacent and in the path of the walls defining aperture 144 of retainer plate 58. A stop lug portion 151 is formed on the lockbar 35 in trailing position with respect to camming portion 150. It will be readily recognized that as the lockbar 35 moves axially inwardly, the portion 150 is forced against the wall defining the upper part of aperture 144 of fixed retainer plate 58, causing the entire lookbar to tilt about a fulcrum point defined at the aperture 42 within the turnbutton 40, such tilting action being magnified toward the inner end 3 -6 of the lockbar 35. The lug 151 provides a stop against the plate 58 to prevent over-shifting of the lockbar inwardly. The inner end 36 of the lockbar actuates dogging plate 101 by its engagement with the walls definingaperture 143 in plate 101, said tilting movement of the bar causing the dogging lug 102 to be projected radially beyond the spindle 80 through dogging aperture 116.
The knob and spindle unit is shown in connection with a latch bolt assembly of the so-called push-type, such name deriving from the fact that a pushing influence is exerted by the cam or roll back members on a tail piece or latch bolt retractor element 161. As shown in FIG. 3 the latch bolt L is normally projected beyond the door edge by a spring 162. Tail piece 161, is slidably mounted on the casing of the latch bolt mechanism 160 and when the tail piece is urged toward the edge of the door, arm 163 of bell crank lever 160a is pivoted causing the opposite arm 164 of said lever to retract the latch bolt L. Latch bolt retractors of the so-called push type, are well known in the art and a further description thereof is not believed necessary.
In the unlocked position, the latch bolt L may be retracted by turning the inside knob 70, the tail piece 161 being shifted toward the door edge in such instance by rollback 33 or 34 dependent upon the direction in which the inside knob is rotated. Similarly, in the undogged position or the assembly, the latch bolt L may be retracted by rotation in either direction of the outside knob 125'. The knob 125 may be rotated in a manner to shift rollback 82 away from the retractor element 161, the abutting side edges 88, 87 of the spindle 80 and the auxiliary spindle 83 respectively in such instance, will provide a driving connection between such spindle and auxiliary spindle whereby the portion 88 of the spindle 80 will drive the portion '87 of the auxiliary spindle 83 to urge said rollback 86 against the retractor element 161. If knob 125 is rotated in the opposite direction, rollback 82 serves to actuate the tail piece 1161 of the latch bolt assembly.
In order to lock the door that is to disable operation of the latch bolt by turning the outside knob 125, it is merely necessary to rotate the turnbutton 4d at the same time applying a slight inwardly directed force. In the course of such rotative movement, the follower dimple 46 formed in the inner spindle 31 will ride against the cam surface 450. of bayonet slot 45 and upon completion of the turning, will rest in trailing cutout portion of 45b formed in said bayonet slot. When the dimple 46 rests in portion 45b, the turnbutton and associated parts will have been shifted inwardly, further compressing the return spring 54. The loc'kbar 35 in the course of rotation of the turnbutton is shifted axially inwardly within the confining slot 68 of bracket 67. The engagement of cam 150 against the walls defining the upper portion of aperture 144 in the retainer plate 58, causes the inner end 36 of the lockbar 35 to be shifted downwardly as previously described and as particularly illustrated in the FIGURE 6.
The downwardly shifting end 36 of lockbar 35 engages the lower wall defining aperture 143 of dog plate 101, causing the dogging nose 102 thereof to be projected outwardly through slot 116 of the spindle 80, slot '89 of spindle S3, and into dog slot 116m in the outer housing portion 21. When the dog nose is thus projected, spindle St) may not be rotated relative to the housing, latch bolt retraction by rotation of the outside knob being thus prevented. The latch bolt may, however, be withdrawn through the use of a suitable key K inserted in the tumbler mechanism. Such retraction is effected by means of rotary movement imparted by driver pins 135 and 136 to sockets 121, 122 in the rear plate 120 of the auxiliary spindle 83. As best seen in FIGURE 3 the actuation of the tumbler mechanism will serve to shift rollback 86 of the auxiliary spindle toward the edge of the door, actuating the retractor element 161 independently of any rotation of the outside spindle 80, the spindle 83 being free to rotate within spindle 80.
It will be readily understood that upon the counterrotation of the turnbutton 40, the bar 35 will be permitted again to shift axially outwardly under the influence of spring 54, thus untilting the lockbar 35 and freeing the dog plate 1G1 to permit the same to be shifted transversely under the influence of spring 115 to a position wherein the dog nose 102 is cleared from the dogging slot 116a in which position the latch bolt may be retracted by rotation in either direction of the outside knob member 125.
White the above-described invention has been illustrated in connection with a turnbutton having a bayonet slot hold in, it will be understood that other means for guiding lock bar 35 may be employed.
Similarly, the form and type of latch bolt assembly employed may be varied by skilled workers in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described our invention and illustrated its use, what we claim as new and seek to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A cylindrical lock comprising a housing, a latch bolt retractor assembly mounted on said housing and including a latch bolt actuator portion, inner and outer spindle members rotatably mounted on said housing, said outer spindle member including a tubular shank and a single rollback portion disposed adjacent said actuator portion and positioned, upon rotation in one direction of said outer spindle member, to be urged into operative contact with said actuator portion and upon rotation in the opposite direction to be shifted away from said actuator portion, a tubular auxiliary spindle member rotatably carried by said outside spindle member and concentrically disposed therein, and including a single rollback portion lying adjacent said actuator portion at a point spaced from said first rollback portion, abu tting portions on said outside and auxiliary spindles forming a driving connection between said outside and auxiliary spindle members, a first slot formed in said outer spindle in a direction normal to the axis of said spindle, a second slot formed in said auxiliary spindle in a direction normal to said axis, said first slot being of lesser angular erdtent than said second slot, a retainer plate having spaced leg portions defining a channel therebetween, said plate being seated within said first slot and having said leg portions extended into said second slot whereby, when said outside spindle member is rotated in said opposite direction said rollback portion of said auxiliary spindle member is urged into operative contact with said actuator portion, said legs limiting the forward and rearward as well as the angular movements of said auxiliary spin-die with respect to said spindle.
2. A cylindrical lock comprising a housing, a latch bolt retractor assembly mounted on said housing and including a latch bolt actuator portion, inner and outer spindle members rotatably mounted on said housing, said outer spindle member including a tubular shank and a single rollback portion disposed adjacent said actuator portion and positioned, upon rotation in one direction of said outer spindle member, to be urged into operative contact with said actuator portion and upon rotation in the opposite direction to be shifted away from said actuator portion, a tubular auxiliary spindle member rotatably carried by said outside spindle member and concentrically disposed therein, and including a single rollback portion lying adjacent said actuator portion at a point spaced from said first rollback portion, abutting portions on said outside and auxiliary spindles forming a driving connection between said outside and auxiliary spindle members, a first slot formed in said outer spindle in a direction normal to the axis of said spindle, a second slot formed in said auxiliary spindle in a direction normal to said axis, said first slot being of lesses angular extent than said second slot, a retainer plate having spaced leg portions defining a channel therebetween, said plate being seated within said first slot and having said leg portions extended into said second slot, a dog slidably carried in said channel of said retainer plate and including a locking finger, means carried by said outer spindle member for shifting said finger of said dog radially outwardly through said second sldt and into a recess formed in said housing, said finger and second slot providing clearance for relative rotary movement of said auxiliary spindle with respect to said finger in the extended position of said finger, said legs of said plate limiting the forward and rearward as well as the angular movements of said auxiliary spindle with respect to said spindle.

Claims (1)

1. A CYLINDRICAL LOCK COMPRISING A HOUSING, A LATCH BOLT RETRACTOR ASSEMBLY MOUNTED ON SAID HOUSING AND INCLUDING A LATCH BOLT ACTUATOR PORTION, INNER AND OUTER SPINDLE MEMBERS ROTATABLY MOUNTED ON SAID HOUSING, SAID OUTER SPINDLE MEMBER INCLUDING A TUBULAR SHANK AND A SINGLE ROLLBACK PORTION DISPOSED ADJACENT SAID ACTUATOR PORTION AND POSITIONED, UPON ROTATION IN ONE DIRECTION OF SAID OUTER SPINDLE MEMBER, TO BE URGED INTO OPERATIVE CONTACT WITH SAID ACTUATOR PORTION AND UPON ROTATION IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION TO BE SHIFTED AWAY FROM SAID ACTUATOR PORTION, A TUBULAR AUXILIARY SPINDLE MEMBER ROTATABLY CARRIED BY SAID OUTSIDE SPINDLE MEMBER AND CONCENTRICALLY DISPOSED THEREIN, AND INCLUDING A SINGLE ROLLBACK PORTION LYING ADJACENT SAID ACTUATOR PORTION AT A POINT SPACED FROM SAID FIRST ROLLBACK PORTION, ABUTTING PORTIONS ON SAID OUTSIDE AND AUXILIARY SPINDLES FORMING A DRIVING CONNECTION BETWEEN SAID OUTSIDE AND AUXILIARY SPINDLE MEMBERS, A FIRST SLOT FORMED IN SAID OUTER SPINDLE IN A DIRECTION NORMAL TO THE AXIS OF SAID SPINDLE, A SECOND SLOT FORMED IN SAID AUXILIARY SPINDLE IN A DIRECTION NORMAL TO SAID AXIS, SAID FIRST SLOT BEING OF LESSER ANGULAR EXTENT THAN SAID SECOND SLOT, A RETAINER PLATE HAVING SPACED LEG PORTIONS DEFINING A CHANNEL THEREBETWEEN, SAID PLATE BEING SEATED WITHIN SAID FIRST SLOT AND HAVING SAID LEG PORTIONS EXTENDED INTO SAID SECOND SLOT WHEREBY, WHEN SAID OUTSIDE SPINDLE MEMBER IS ROTATED IN SAID OPPOSITE DIRECTION SAID ROLLBACK PORTION OF SAID AUXILIARY SPINDLE MEMBER IS URGED INTO OPERATIVE CONTACT WITH SAID ACTUATOR PORTION, SAID LEGS LIMITING THE FORWARD AND REARWARD AS WELL AS THE ANGULAR MOVEMENTS OF SAID AUXILIARY SPINDLE WITH RESPECT TO SAID SPINDLE.
