(Cl. 29-263) This invention relates to a bushing removing and inserting tool, and is more particularly concerned with a portable, manually operable tool designed to remove and insert or replace bushings, bearings and the like.
Devices to remove and insert bushings are in common use; however, such devices are frequently large, cumbersome, pneumatically opera ed devices which would not be readily portable nor suitable for use in restricted or cramped areas.
The device of the present invention comprises a central scre threaded bolt having axially aligned cylindrical force transmitting members which may be arranged to apply force as desired. A nut is provided on the central bolt to apply the desired force. The present device is rugged, compact and highly versatile.
It is among the objects of the present invention to provide a device to insert and remove bushings, bearings and the like, which device is sufficiently compact to be used in cramped or restricted areas.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a device to insert and remove bushings, bearings and the like, which device is completely portable, and manually operable.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a device to insert and remove bushings, which device is versatile and easily adaptable to a variety of applications.
A further object of the present invention is to proide a device of the character described which is simple and efficient in operation, durable in construction, and well designed to meet the demands of economic manufacture.
Other and further objects, features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from consideration of the following specification taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a longitudinal cross sectional view of one embodiment of the present invention, shown with the components arranged to remove a bushing.
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal cross sectional view of the device as shown in PEG. 1, having the components arranged to insert a bushing.
FIG. 3 is an end view as seen from the bottom of FIG. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings and to that embodiment here chosen by way of illustration of the general concept of the invention, it will be seen that a prior art member ill is adapted to receive a bushing it within opening 12. The tool of the present invention is arranged in FIG. 1 to remove the bushing from the opening 12.. The device itself comprises a central screw 14 having on one end thereof a head 15 formed integrally therewith and having fiat lateral tool engaging faces 13. A irusto-conical member 16 is secured permanently to the bolt 14 contiguous with the head 15.
As seen in FIG. 1, two force transmitting cylinders are provided which removably surround the bolt 14. The cylinder 18 is open on one end providing an annular face, and has the opposite end 26 closed by end wall 21 which is provided with an aperture 22 to receive bolt 14 therethrough. The central bore 23 is of such size as to receive the bushing to be removed, as bushing 11.
Axially aligned with cylinder 1-8 is cylinder 39, which is formed similarly to cylinder 18, but is smaller, and is here used as a spacing member, the open end 31 ter- Patented Nov. 19, 1983 ice minating at an annular face 31 hearing against the end wall 21 of cylinder 18. The end wall 32 of cylindcr 30 is provided with aperture 33 to receive bolt 14 therethrough, and the wall 32 sets as the force receiving surface for anti-friction bearing 35. A nut 38 is threaded on bolt 14 and is adapted to be screwed down against the bearing 35.
It will be seen that the present invention as shown in FIG. 1 provides a very simple device to remove bearings, bushings or the like. In use, the screw 14 is placed through the central opening in the bushing to be reioved, as bushing 11, and the larger end of frusto-conical member 16 bears against one side of bushing 11. The cylinder 18 is placed over the screw 14- with the open end 19 adjacent the member iii so that the bushing 11 may be received within the central opening 23, while the open end of the side wall of the cylinder 13 bears against the member 10. The cylinder 30 is then placed over the bolt 14 with the end 31 bearing against cylinder 18. The anti-friction bearing 3'5 is slipped over the bolt 14 and the nut 38 is screwed onto the bolt 14 and run down against the bearing 35.
With the above described arrangement, the cylinders 18 and 30 will maintain the distance between the nut 38 and the member it therefore, when the nut 38 is tightened, the head 15 and frusto-conical guide member in will move toward the nut 35;, carrying with them the bushing 11, which will be urged into the central opening 23 in cylinder 18. The bearing 35 reduces the frictional drag between the nut 33 and the cylinder 30 for added ease in operation; the taper on the member 16 prevents binding in the opening 12.
It will, of course, be understood that the various parts may be made in a size to accommodate any desired bushing, bearing or other sleeve-like part.
When the old bushing has been removed and it is desired to reinsert the bushing or put in a new bushing, the tool of the present invention may be arranged as shown in FIG. 2 to insert a bushing, as bushing 11, into the receiving member, as member 10. In such cases, cylinder 18 is fitted over the bolt 14 with the end wall 21 abutting the frusto-conical member l d. Fitted over the screw 14 and received within the central opening 23 of cylinder 18 is an adapter 40 having an axial bore 41 and a counterbore 42 forming, in effect, internal ledges 4-4 and 45 in the cylinder. Since the bushing 11 will fit inside the opening 23, the member 4-0 acts as an adapter to restrict the movement of the bushing 11 into the cylinder 18 as the side wall at the open end of the counterbore 42 engages the overlapping rib 43 on bushing 11. The bolt 14 is then run through the bushing to be inserted, as bushing 11, then through the member into which the bushing is to be inserted, as member 10. The cylinder 30 is slipped over the bolt 24 with the open end 31 against the member it the bearing 35 is placed against the cylinder 3% bearing on end wall 32, and the nut 31 is screwed down against the bearing 35.
It will now be seen that the nut and bearing 35 are spaced from member 19 by cylinder 3i therefore, as the nut 33 is tightened on the bolt 14, the head l5 and frusto-conical member 16 will urge the cylinder 13, hence adapter 4-9, toward the receiving member iii, and the bushing 11 is forced by member 4i) into the opening 12.
From the foregoing, it will be obvious that my invention provides a' compact, simple and rugged tool which is easily transported. The size of the device renders it useful in cramped areas were larger prior art devices can not be used. No source of power other than manual is required, which makes the present device useful for work in a shop or vfor home use Where pneumatic power is not readily available. While the device here presented may be equally useful in the inserting and removing of many bearings, bushings, and other sleeve-like members.
it will therefore be realized that the present invention is not limited to the particular embodiment here chosen by Way of illustration, but many changes and modifications may be made, and the full use of equivalents resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device for sliding a bushing in a body bore, said device comprising a bolt having a head at one end and an opposite end portion carrying a nut threaded thereon, a irust'o-conical engagement piece on the bolt at the head, two cup-like cylinder members between the piece and nut and having recesses and respective bottoms provided with central holes slidably receiving the bolt therethrough, and holding the members substantially coaxial with the bolt, the members being of respective internal diameters to guidingly receive opposite end portions of a bushing, the bottom of one member being closer to the nut than is that of the other one of the members, said other one of the members being removable from the bolt to permit reversal of the ends thereof relative to the bolt having its recess substantially deep enough to contain the bushing when the piece pushes the bushing from the body, and a removable adapter in the removable member for reducing the eitective depth of the cup-recess therein so that when the piece and nut approach each other and the removable member is open toward the body and a bushing is in such member, the bushing can be inserted into the body bore without the removable member reaching as near the body as when the adapter is absent and the removable member is used to receive the bushing when the latter is forced from the body.
2. A device for moving a bushing member in a bore provided in a body, said device comprising a bolt for passing through the bushing member coaxially and provided with a head at one end and a nut threaded on the opposite end portion of the bolt, an engagement piece coaxial with the bolt at the head and having a frustroconical sidewall for providing an edge of greater diameter and a fiat engagement surface defined by said edge transverse to the axis of the bolt and facing toward the nut, two bored cylinder members of different diameter on the bolt coaxial therewith and between said engagement surface and the nut, each cylinder having an end wall provided with a central aperture for slidably receiving the bolt therethrough, the exterior face of at least one of said walls facing toward said nut, and an anti-friction bearing means between and engaging said exterior face and the nut, said engagement surface being en- 'gageable on one of the memberg-and one of said cylinder members being engageable against the body to brace 4- against same for moving the bushing member relative to the body when the bolt moves axially with respect to the body and carries the bushing member therewith.
3. A device for moving abushing ina bore provided in a body, said device comprising a bolt for passing through the bushing coaxially and provided with a head having a flat lateral tool engaging face, a .nut threaded on the opposite end portion of the bolt, a frusto-conical engagement member permanently coaxial with the bolt having its end of reduced diameter at said head and providing a flat engagement surface transverse to the axis of the bolt facing toward the nut, two hollow cylinders of respectively difierent internal diameter on the bolt coaxial therewith and between said engagement surface and the nut, each cylinder being open at one end for receiving and guiding parts of the bushing and having an end opposite wall provided with a central aperture for slidably receiving the bolt therethrough, the exterior face of at least one of said walls facing toward saidnut, an anti-friction bearing device engaging said face and the nut, each cylinder having an annular face at the end opposite the end wall, the annular face or" one cylinder being en-gageable on the body about the bore for such cylinder to space the end wall thereof sufficiently to perm-it entry of a part of the bushing axially into the cylinder when the bolt is drawn axially with respect thereto and 'a cuplike adaptor removably received within the larger cylinder for selectively adapting said larger cylinder for engaging the bushing to urge the same Within said bore when the smaller cylinder is poistioned on the opposite side of said body from said larger cylinder, said adaptor being of a length to abut the end of said bushing within said larger cylinder so that said one end of said larger cylinder abuts said body when said bushing is positioned properly within said bore.

A device as claimed in claim 3, the cylinder of smaller diameter having the annular face thereof disposable against the outer face of the end Wall of the other cylinder, and the engagement member against an end of the bushing for tending to draw the bushing into the larger cylinder when the nut is rotated with respect to the bolt. 5. A device as claimed in claim 4, said adapter having a e-ounterbore to receive part of a bushing and to provide an annular ledge to support a peripheral bushing rib.

Claims (1)
1. A DEVICE FOR SLIDING A BUSHING IN A BODY BORE, SAID DEVICE COMPRISING A BOLT HAVING A HEAD AT ONE END AND AN OPPOSITE END PORTION CARRYING A NUT THREADED THEREON, A FRUSTO-CONICAL ENGAGEMENT PIECE ON THE BOLT AT THE HEAD, TWO CUP-LIKE CYLINDER MEMBERS BETWEEN THE PIECE AND NUT AND HAVING RECESSES AND RESPECTIVE BOTTOMS PROVIDED WITH CENTRAL HOLES SLIDABLY RECEIVING THE BOLT THERETHROUGH, AND HOLDING THE MEMBERS SUBSTANTIALLY COAXIAL WITH THE BOLT, THE MEMBERS BEING OF RESPECTIVE INTERNAL DIAMETERS TO GUIDINGLY RECEIVE OPPOSITE END PORTIONS OF A BUSHING, THE BOTTOM OF ONE MEMBER BEING CLOSER TO THE NUT THAN IS THAT OF THE OTHER ONE OF THE MEMBERS, SAID OTHER ONE OF THE MEMBERS BEING REMOVABLE FROM THE BOLT TO PERMIT REVERSAL OF THE ENDS THEREOF RELATIVE TO THE BOLT AND HAVING ITS RECESS SUBSTANTIALLY DEEP ENOUGH TO CONTAIN THE BUSHING WHEN THE PIECE PUSHES THE BUSHING FROM THE BODY, AND A REMOVABLE ADAPTER IN THE REMOVABLE MEMBER FOR REDUCING THE EFFECTIVE DEPTH OF THE CUP-RECESS THEREIN SO THAT WHEN THE PIECE AND NUT APPROACH EACH OTHER AND THE REMOVABLE MEMBER IS OPEN TOWARD THE BODY AND A BUSHING IS IN SUCH MEMBER, THE BUSHING CAN BE INSERTED INTO THE BODY BORE WITHOUT THE REMOVABLE MEMBER REACHING AS NEAR THE BODY AS WHEN THE ADAPTER IS ABSENT AND THE REMOVABLE MEMBER IS USED TO RECEIVE THE BUSHING WHEN THE LATTER IS FORCED FROM THE BODY.
