Filed Jan. 24, 1962, Ser. No. 168,362 8 Claims. (Cl. 51-221) Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in grinding xtures especially adapted for use in holding and manually guiding workpieces during the grinding of radii thereon.
A principal object of our invention is to provide a fixture of the character hereinafter described which is relatively simple in construction, one which can be economically manufactured, and which is portable.
Another object of our invention is to provide a fixture of a construction permitting manual manipulation relative to the grinding wheel or tool to facilitate the grinding of radii on a workpiece such, for example, a punch, the fixture being of such construction as to facilitate making a wide range of radii on workpieces of Various sizes and shapes.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a grinding iixture which may become a part of a kit of tools of a mechanic.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
FIG. l is a perspective view of our invention;
FIG. 2 is a sectional detail view taken substantially on line 2-2 of FIG. l;
FIG. 3 is a plan view of the same;
FIG. 4 is a front elevational view of the same;
FIG. 5 is a perspective view of the parts shown in exploded relation with respect to each other;
FIG. 6 is a plan view of the invention similar to FIG. 3, partly in section, showing an angle guide for the fixture.
Construction The drawings illustrate the preferred form of construction of our invention. Such construction comprises a base plate 10 preferably of elongated formation, the top and bottom surfaces of which are substantially flat. Extending longitudinally of the base plate 10 and opening from the top side thereof is a longitudinally extending groove 11. Operable for movement longitudinally of the groove 11 is an elongated rib 12. The rib 12 is connected to a workholder 13 by means of bolts 14.
Formed in the base plate 10 is an elongated slot 15, the lower portion 16 of which is of a size slightly greater than the upper portion 17 so as to provide an uninterrupted shoulder 18. The shoulder 18 is engaged by a washer 19 carried by a bolt 20. The bolt 20 is threaded into an opening 21 formed in the rib 12. This arrangement provides a means of effecting an adjustable connection between the workholder 13 and the base plate 10. The workholder 13 has a substantially flat bottom surface 22 which is in facial abutment with the top fiat surface of the base plate 1t). The workholder 13 is substantially rectangular in plan view and at its forward end is provided with a substantially V-shaped seat 23 against which abuts the shank 24 of a workpiece 25 to be ground.
A yoke 26 is secured to the front end 27 of the workholder 13 by means of bolts 23, the head portions of which are confined in sockets 29 formed in the yoke 26. The yoke 26 is semicircular in plan view. Projecting through the central bight portion thereof is a clamping screw 31 adapted to be threaded against the shank 24 of the workpiece 25 to firmly hold the latter in place during the grinding operation.
Inthe bottom portion of the workholder 13 there is provided a cut-out portion 32 to accommodate the head 33 of the workpiece 25 when such workpiece is provided with a head.
The forward portion of the base plate 10 is semicircular in plan view defined by a radius extending from the center of an opening 34 formed in the base plate 10. The semicircular curved forward portion 30 of the base plate 10 serves as a nose-piece for reasons which will be presently explained.
At the option of the user, the bed plate 35 upon which the fixture is operatively placed, may be provided with an upstanding pin or stud 36 shown in dotted lines in FIG. 2, serving as a pivot about which the fixture is oscillated.
For purposes of securing the work holder 13 in an adjusted position with respect to the base plate 10 after the operator has determined the radius to be ground and before the bolt 2t) is tightened, there are provided in the base plate several set screws 12 which are adapted to be threaded against the rib 12.
In FIG. 6 there is shown removably threaded into the openings 39 formed in the opposite sides of the base plate, angle guide pins 40. Such pins are optional equipment and when used are adapted to engage the bar 37, thereby to locate the work piece 2S for the grinding of an angle on each side thereof, or, in the case where a radius is to be ground on each side of the radius.
While we have shown two guide pins 40 in FIG. 6, it is understood that in a case where only one angle is to be ground, only one guide pin is required. The angle to be ground may be varied by adjusting the length or position of the guide pins 4i) relative to the base plate 10.
Operation v portion against the shank 24 of the workpiece 25 to securely clamp the workpiece in the fixture.
The bed plate 35 is provided with a bar 37 which is normally positioned adjacent to a grinding wheel 38 diagrammatically illustrated in FIG. l.
The fixture is now placed upon the bed plate 35 and moved in a direction to dispose the nose-piece 30 against the bar 37. It will be noted that the nose-piece 30 when in engagement with the bar 37 will be disposed generally beneath the edge of the grinding wheel, thus to present the workpiece 25 to the side of the grinding wheel for grinding operation. When this position of the workpiece with respect to the grinding wheel is thus determined, the bolt 2l) is then threaded to secure the workholder 13 in a xed position upon the base plate 1t).
The operator now grasps the fixture by the hand and as the grinding wheel 38 is rotated, the fixture is oscillated in a horizontal plane upon the bed plate 35, thus presenting to the grinding wheel the surfaces of the workpiece which are to be ground. This continues until the proper radius is formed upon the side of the workpiece 25 by the grinding wheel 38.
Upon completion of forming the required radius on such side of the workpiece 25, the operator unthreads the clamping bolt 31 suiciently to allow him to rotate the workpiece 25 within the seat 23 so as to present the opposite side of the workpiece to the grinding wheel for grinding operation.
By adjusting the workholder 13 predetermined or calculated distances to the rear of the long axis through the opening 34, the radius to be ground on the workpiece may be varied.
By the simple oscillation of the fixture in a horizontal plane upon the bed plate 35 with the guiding nose-piece 30 of the base plate 10 bearing against the bar 37 and with the workpiece in engagement with the grinding wheel 38, a radius may be ground with a minimum degree of time and labor.
In cases where the bed plate 35 is provided with a pin 34, such pin 34 may be used as the point of pivot about which the fixture is oscillated on the bed plate 35.
The grinding fixture is of such size as will enable the user to include it as a part of a kit of tools, if desired.
The fixture is to be formed of such material as will best serve the purpose.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. We, therefore,
do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
