SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,689, dated January 13, 18`85,

Be it known that I, EVERETT L. LAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Syracuse,in the county ofOnondaga and the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Breech-Loading Fire-Arms, of whichthe following is a specification. v
My invention relates to improvements in the mechanism forbreech-loading fire-arms, whereby the hammer and lock are dispensed with and throwing out the broken shells and inserting new cartridges are simplified.

Arepresents the breech or stock of the gun., in which the plungers P, the vibrating spring S, the trigger-plate with the jointed lever or trigger` L, with the springs s and s, the ratchet R, star-wheels R R, shaft c, spring t,and dovetailed groove g are located and supported.

The spring S is fastened to the stock back of the trigger, and is bent to form a guard therefor. Near where it passes through the trigger-plateit is split,and on entering the stock it is forked or V-shaped, and the-respective ends enter the notchesnin the right and left plungers. The front edge of the slot o in the trigger-plate, through which the spring passes in entering the stock, acts as a stop for the spring, while the inside of the stock is so cut away that the ends of the spring whip. forward and carry the plungers forward to explode the cartridges, and then vibrate to such a position of rest that the plungers are entire] y within the breech or stock.
c is a shaft supported by hangers, upon which are placed the ratchet-wheel Rand the star-wheels R B, (see Fig. 3,) arranged so that the ratchet-wheel It connects with the lever or trigger L, and the star-wheel R with the right and the star-wheel R with the left hand plunger. There are two notches on the ratchet-wheel R to one on the star-wheels R or R, and these star-wheels are so fastened to the shaft c that the notches on the respective wheels are in line` with the alternate notches on the ratchet-wheel, so that when the point on the star-wheel R enters the notch r of the right-hand plun-ger and the plunger is drawn back by pressure upon the power end of the trigger the other end engages the ratchet-wheel R until the star-wheel Rpasses 'the point of connection with the plunger, and the plunger is left free to explode the cartridge, and the trigger is restored to its position of rest by the spiral spring s. Then the point on the star-wheel R enters the notch i' .of the left-hand plunger, and in like manner is drawn back and let go, and thus alternately the barrels are discharged. By pressing upon the head of the shaft c thecoil-spring t is pressed back and the star-wheels R R are thrown out of connection with the plungers, and then the trigger may be drawn back without vdrawing back or discharging either plunger. By this arrangement the same barrel may be repeatedly discharged. The end of thelockingbolt b is so beveled that when the stock of the gun is in the right hand, and the left hand, being upon the barrels, is twisted around, the bolt is pressed back and the barrels revolve upon the axle C. The screw in the slot in the bolt b keeps it from being thrown out of place by the spring. The arms w, with the shoulders a, pass through the grooves g in the line of a circle. The key 7c, extending through the lug of the barrels and across the axle C in the furrow 1, keeps the barrels :in place while revolving about the axle C. The foot of the ejector-lever Z rests in the cam-groove 2 ofthe axle C,whilethe top of the ej ector-lever enters a mortise in the extractor,
