T. P.& J. B. HALL.
TRIGYGLE.
Patented Jan. 13, 11885.
ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrca.
TOMAS P. HALL AND JAMES B. HALL, OF TORONTO, CANADA.
TRICYCLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,676, dated January 13, 1885.
Application filed June 27, 1884. (No model) To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, TOMAS P. HALL and JAMES B. HALL, of Toronto, Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Tricycle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved tricycle which is small and compact, simple in construction, strong and durable.
The invention consists in the combination, with a frame, of a shaft journaled in the rear of the same, on which shaft the driving-wheels are mounted, the said shaft and wheels being revolved by gearing from levers pivoted to the front of the frame, and being provided with foot-plates. The steering-wheel is pivoted in the lower end of a tube held to turn in the front of the frame, and containing a rod which may be raised or lowered and locked in place.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which a perspective view of our improved tricycle is shown.
Two driving-wheels, A, are mounted on th ends of a shaft, 13, journaled in the rear end of a reach or frame, G, which is curved downward and toward the rear. In the front upper end of the reach or frame a vertical tube, D, is held to turn, in the lower forked end, D, of which the steering-wheel E is pivoted. A rod, F, fitting in the tube D, and adapted to be moved up and down in the same, is provided with atransverse handle or cross-piece, G, on its upper end. The rod F can be locked in the desired position in the tube D by means of a binding-screw, H. On the front end of the reach or frame 0 levers or rods J are pivoted at opposite sides, on the rear ends of which levers footplates K are formed. On the shaft B a pinion, L, is rigidly mounted, which engages with a cog-wheel, M, pivoted on the frame or reach 0, and provided with two opposite cranks, N, to which connectingrods 0 are pivoted, which are also pivoted to the under sides of the foot-plates K. The distance from the front of the frame 0 to the pivots of the rods 0 on the foot-plates is greater than the distance from the front of the frame 0 to the center of the wheel M, which is thus revolved more than through half a circle at each stroke, thus avoiding dead-centers.
The person stands on the tricycle with one foot on each foot-plate, and the tricycle is operated by alternately bringing the weight of the body on the two foot-plates K, from which the shaft B and the wheels A are revolved, by means of the connectingrods O, the cranks N, the cog-wheel M, and the pinion L.
The rod F, which is used for steering and as a hold for the rider, can easily be adjusted higher or lower to suit the rider.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters I Patent- 1. In a tricycle, the combination, with the frame 0, of the driving-whee1s A, the tube D, the steering-wheel E, pivoted to the same, the rod F in the tube 1), and means for locking the rod F in place, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a tricycle, the combination, with the frame 0, of the shaft B, the drivingwheels A, the levers J, pivoted to the front of the frame and provided with foot-plates K, and gearing for revolving the shaft B from the said footplates, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a tricycle, the combination, with the frame 0, of the shaft B, the levers J, having foot-plates K, the pinion L on the shaft B, the cog-wheel M, the cranks N, and the connecting-rods O, substantially as herein shown and described.
TOMAS P. HALL. JAMES B. HALL. IVitnesses:
\VILLIAM G. SHAW, JAMES SI-IOZACK.
