Be it known that I, WILLIAM GEORGE CAN- NON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 106 and 107 London Road, Southwark, in the county of Surrey, England, gas and hot-water engineer, and manufacturer of hot-water apparatus, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Radiators, (for which I have obtained a patent in Io Great Britain, No.8,395, bearing date 29th of May, 188%) oi' which the following` is aspcciiication.
The object of my invention is to construct hot-watcr and steam coils or radiators for heat- I 5 ing purposes in au im proved manner,and with increased facilities for making the joints.
Incarrying out my invention, I usually cast triple pipes in one casting, the main body of which consists of three pipes, and the two 2o ends of which three pipes unite and form one neck the area ot' which is about equal to the united areas of the three pipes.
Instead of grouping1 three pipes together, four or more may be similarly grouped for the same object, and in all eases, if necessary, a cross waterway can be arranged through the center of the group ot' tubes. The neck or junction at each end ofthe group of pipes is 'provided with a ilange or shoulder, upon which 30 a. vulcanite, asbestns, orother joint-packing is placed to make a steam or water tight joint. The cross-sectional it'orm ofthe tubes Inay be rectangular, elliptical, circular, or otherwise, the object being to present alarge heating-sun face to the atmosphere to be warmed. rihc ends, however, are (by preference) circular; but I do not coniine myself to that form, as other forms may be used. These tubes are connected to soeket-tubes,which are placed at 4o right angles thereto, the multiple tubes being usually placed in a vertical position and the socket-tubes in a horizontal position, but these positions may be reversed or otherwise varied according to circumstances. The socketstubes are made with suitable socket or stuffing boxes, which it the necks of the grouped or multiple tubes, and the joint is made by means of a ring of vulcanite, asbestus, or other suitable packinfr. The center pipe of the group is further utilized by passing a rod through 5o the same, the ends ot' which rod are tapped to received a nut; or one end may have a head formed thereon, and the other end may be tapped to receive anut. The ends of this rod pass through a. suitable hole in the outer or socket tube at the top and bottom. In some cases the rod is provided with a nut and washer to make a joint and keep the multiple-tube ends in the sockets, and in other cases for the same purpose a countersunk boss is provided 6o in the socket-pipe into which the rod is tapped or otherwise attached, so as to make a sunk connection and leave the outside of the socketpipe fair and ilush without projections. When a number of grouped tubes are connected together,the tiereds may be omitted from some ofthe groups,.and a tie-rod may be iitted to every second or third group only, unless the pressure requires a greater number of tie-rods. The several connections may also be made with iron-cementjoint-s by making the joints of sufficient length, in which case the tie-rods may be dispensed with. The several pipes, rods, nuts, washers, and other articles may be made with any suitable materials, cast-iron 7 5 beingprei'erableto save expense; and in order that my said invention may be clearly understood, reference is hereby madeto the accom-4 panying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

It is obvious that my said invention is equally applicable to the use of steam for heating purposes.
I am aware that radiators have been coinposed of sections comprising several pipes emerging at one end into asingle pipe coupled to horizontal connecting-pipes, and I am also aware that the sections of a radiator have been secured together by rods passing through the interior ofthe pipes. Such features, therefore, I do not broadly claim.
Having now particnlary described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed,I declare that what I claim is# l. In heating apparatus, the combination, with socket-pipes, of multiple pipes merging l into one at each end, and a tension-rod passing through one branch of the multiple pipes, and having its ends connected to the socket-pipes, substantially as described.
2. In heating apparatus, the combination ofthe pipes b, having sockets, and the multiple pipes merging into one at each end and formed with transverse communicating Ways or chambers, and the ends of the pipes fitti ng the said sockets with the tension-rod passing through one branch of the multiple pipes and having its ends connected to the socl et-pipes, substantially as described.
