To all 2071/0712, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OIIN H. BANSER, of North Clarendon, in the county of \Varren and State of, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rope-Sock ets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to sockets for holding the rope by which the drill used in boring oil and other wells is raised and lowered; and it consists in a clamping rope-socket of novel construction, wherebyincreased facility is afforded for coupling and uncoupling, all as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents an exterior longitudinal view of a rope-socket embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a mainly longitudinal section of the same, with a piece of rope as held by the socket; Fig. 3, a transverse section on the line y 3 in Fig. 2, and Fig. at a transverse section on the line 2 z in said Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an interior longitudinal View of one of the clamps used in the socket detached.
A indicates the rope-holding portion of the socket, and B the tool or drill stock part, which screws into the part A, as at b, and has an inner end pinextension, c, with which, as by lips and groove d 6, two clamps or separate sections, 0 C, ol"alongitudinally-divided tubular clamp engage. This clamp, which may or may not have screw-threads on its exterior, is of tapering construction externally for the greater portion of its lcngth,corresponding to the tapering construction of a portion,f, of the interior of the part A, which it fits, and is also of corresponding taper, or approximately so, on its inside, to take its hold on the rope D, and is furthermore provided internally with annular ribs 9, to prevent the rope from slipping. The rope D where it enters the tapering portion of the socket A, and between the clamp-sections O O, is covered with a cord wrap, h, to give it an enlarged or in creased surface, and secure a more effective grip. Upon screwing the parts A and B together,and upon strain coming on the rope D, the inside and outside tapering construction of the clamp-section G O and tapering construction of the part f of the socket portion A will cause said clamp-sections to crowd on the rope, and secure such a firm grip that it will be found impossible to pull out the rope, and only on unscrewing the partA andB can the rope, with the clainp sections O C, be drawn out from the large end of the socket. The rope is readily inserted to its place when required, and effectually secured by the screwing of the parts A and B together, and the coupling or uncoupling is in a measure automatic-that is, the screwing and unscrewing of the parts A and 13 together or from one another serve to secure or release the hold of the socket on the rope, doing away with all rivet; ing or other like means of fastening, and saving both time and labor.
I am aware that a rope-socket composed of a tapering divided clamp having inwardlyprojecting teeth and a tapering socket in which said clamp is held is old, and I therefore do not claim such invention.
Having thus described my inventiond claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a tapering socket, of a tapering divided clamp having one end provided with inwardly-projecting lips, and a tool-holder provided with a headed extension engaging the lips of the clamp, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the tapering socket A, of the tapering divided clamp 0, provided with the lips d and the ribs g, and the tool-holder B, provided with the headed ex tension 0 a, substantially as herein shown and described.
