Description

(No Model.)
H. G. WATT.
ELECTRICAL CONDUCTOR.
No. 310,345. Patented Jan. 6, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY O. \VATT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ELECTRlCAL CONDUCTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,345, dated January 6, 1885.
(No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. \VATT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Penn sylvania, have invented a new and useful Iniprovement in Electric Conductors, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of an electric conductor embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section enlarged in line a." 9.".
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists of an electric conductor which is thoroughly insulated and rendered water-proof, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents wires or electric conductors having a coating, a, T gum-turpentine, around which is a covering, b, of hemp or linen braid. The braid is coated with metallic or water-proof paint, as at 6, around which is a covering, (Z, of hemp or linen braid. A coating, c, of metallic or water-proof paint is applied to the covering d, and covered by braided wire f, and a coating, g, of tar applied to the wire.
It will be seen that the cable produced is water-proof and the wires thoroughly insulated. The exterior wire, f, forms a flexible sheath, which protects the inner materials from loosening and separating, and also prevents abrasion of said materials by the action of water and passing objects in the water. The gum-turpentine around the wires Athoroughly insulates the same, and is a perfect non conductor. It is impervious to the ac tion of acids, moisture, rust, &c., and thoroughly Waterproofs the wire or wires, said gum being, it is believed, the exuding of turpentine-pine trees, or expressed from turpentine.
In lieu of gum turpentine, I may use any equivalent resin.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An electric conducting-wire having a coating of gum-turpentine, coverings of hemp or linen braid, coatings of metallic or waterproof paint, and a covering of braided wire, substantially as and for the purpose set'forth.
2. An electric conducting-wire having a coating of gum-turpentine, coverings of hemp or linen braid, coatings of metallic or waterproof paint, a covering of braided wire, and an exterior of-tar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
