Description

(M0de1.)
A. F. TAYLOR.
- IIWENVTOR: a $42 ATTORNEYS.
BY WW5 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT F. TAYLOR, OF PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND.
HUB-CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,332, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed April 10, 1884. (Model) To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, ALBERT F. TAYLOR, of threaded part of the cap being of the same Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Hub-Cap, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved cap for closing the outer end of a hub, and thus preventing the grease from flowing out and sand from passing in between the axle-box and axle.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of :my improved hubcap, showing it screwed on a hub, which, with the axle-stem, is also shown in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is an end view of the hub. Fig. 3 is an in side face view of my improved hub-cap.
The hub A is provided with the usual end band or head-band, B, which is provided in its inner surface with an annular screw-threaded projection, B. A suitable nut, G, is screwed on the axlestem E to bear against the axlebox. The cap G, madeof cast or sheet metal, is provided with an annular flange, I, fitting over the outer surface of the band B. The cap Gis provided with an annular V-shaped groove, H, in its outer surface, whereby a central hollow projecting part, J, is formed, which does not project beyond the outer edge of the rim of the cap. In the inner part or bottom of the inner surface of the annular V- shaped part a screw-thread, K, is cut, adapted to engage with the screw-thread of the part B the cap.
of the band B, the said part B and the screwdiameter. A packing-strip, K, is held in the groove formed by the flange I and the side of After the nut O has been drawn up tight, the cap G is screwed on the end of the hub, the sorew-threads on the cap taking in the screw-threads in the band B. The cap thus closes the outer end of the hub and prevents the grease from running out, thus protecting the clothing frombeing soiled. The cap also gives the hub an elegant finish, and prevents sand from passing in between the stem E and the axle-box F. The packing K is pressed against the end edge of the band B.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The band B, provided with the internal -screw-threaded projection, B, in combination with the cap G, formed with V-shaped depression H, hollow projecting part J, annular flange I, constructed to fit over the outer end of the band, and screw-threaded portion K, as shown, for engaging the screw -threaded projection B, substantially as shown and de scribed.
2. The band B, provided with the internal screw-threaded projection, B, in combination with the cap G, formed with V-shaped depression H, hollow projecting part J, annular flange I, forming a groove for the end of the band to fit in, screw-threaded portion K, and the packing K, within the groove formed by the flange I, for the end of the band to rest against, substantially asshown and described.
v ALBERT F. TAYLOR.
