SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,272, dated January 6,1885. I Application filed November 3, 1884. (No model.)

Be it known that we, J OHN GYPE and Gums- TIAN GYPE, citizens of the United States, residing at Tedrow, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cider Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to cider-presses; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which shall be cheap and simple in its construction, effective in its operation, and one that will be strong and durable.
Vith the above and other ends in View the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a cider-press constructed in accordance with our invention, and Fig. 2 is alongitudinal vertical section of the same on the line 00 w of Fig. 1. I
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate correspond ing parts in both the figures, A represents the supporting-frame, which consists of the longitudinal side beams, B B. The upper side beams, B, are connected at their ends by means of tie-beams C, while the beams B are connected at their ends by similar cross or tie beams, D. Upon the under side of the upper side beams, B, near each end thereof, is provided a cross-beam, a, while the lower beams, B, are provided with similar beams, 1), arranged on a vertical line with the beams a.
E represents a shaft which has hearing at its upper end in a crossbeam, b, and at its lower end in a crossbeam, c, said beams being located about midway between the ends of the supporting frame, as shown. Upon the shaft E is rigidly mounted a gear-wheel, F, said wheel being located just below the beam 2), while upon said shaft. E, just above the beam 0, is mounted a pinion-wheel, d. F represents a shaft which is mounted in boxes secured to the cross or tie beams O and one of the beams a. Upon the inner end of this shaft F is mounted a gear-wheel, G, which is adapted to mesh with the gear-wheel F, said shaft having on its outer end a spur-wheel adapted to receive a chain or belt for driving the shaft F.

Upon the under side of the follower-beam H, midway between the ends of the same, is secured a follower or platen, I, the operation of which will be more fully de scribed. Upon the shaft G is mounted a clutch, the upper section or disk of which is loose on said shaft, while the lower section or disk is fitted with grooves adapted to receive a spline on the said shaft. It will thus be seen that said disks, when in the position shown in Fig. 2, do not turn with the shaft; but as soon as the lower section of the clutch is pushed upwardly, so that the groove engages the spline on the shaft, said disks turn with the shaft. The lower section or disk of the clutch J is raised and lowered by means of a lever, K, which is pivoted as shown. Upon the upper side of the supporting-frame A, on each side of the beam 1), are provided cross'beams L, having grooves h. At the end of the frame adjacent to the shaft G is provided a cross-beam, M, having a groove or channel, at, upon its upper face.
N represents a platform which has an open ing about its center. lhis opening is adapted to receive the upper section of the clutch, and the platform is secured to said section in any suitable manner, so that it willturn therewith. It will be observed that while one end of the platform is directly under the platen or follower, the other or opposite end is located outside of and beyond the supporting-frame. The platform is provided on its under side with ribs or feathers,which fit in the grooves in the platfornrsupporting beams.
The operation is as follows: Atub containing apples is placed upon the inner end of the platform. Motion is then imparted to the shafts G G through the gearing before described. The shafts in revolving turn in the screw-threaded seats of the follower-beam and lower the samepthe platen or follower entering the tub containing the apples or other fruit and expressing the juice therefrom. As soon as the fruit in the tub has been sufficiently pressed the gearing is reversed, thus raising the follower-beam and follower. As soon as the follower has cleared the tub-that is, raised therefrom-the lower section of the clutch is pushed upwardly into engagement with the upper section,thus causing said clutch to become rigid on the shaft, and as the platform is rigidly secured to the upper section of the clutch it is turned, so as to earry the tub outside of the frame, thus bringing another tub under the follower, the latter-mentioned tub having been filled while the other one was being operated upon. As soon as said tub has arrived at the point beneath the follower the sections composing the clutch are thrown from engagement with each other, thus leaving the platform at a standstill. The gearing is again reversed and the operation continued,as above described.
It will be seen that by the construction of press shown and described the tubs containing the apples or other fruit may be readily brought beneath the follower and the juice expressed therefrom.
The press above described is simple,may be manufactured at a slight cost, is effective in its operation, and is strong and durable.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a suitable sup porting frame, of shafts, screw threaded at their upper ends, mounted therein, a followermounted on said shafts, and a platform for supporting the tubs containing the fruit to be operated upon, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a suitable supporting frame, of shafts, screw-threaded at their upperends, mounted therein,a followerbeam carrying a follower or platen,and a platform, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with a suitable supporting frame, of shafts, screw -threaded at their upper ends, mounted therein, means, substantially as described, for operating said shafts, a follower-beam carrying a follower, and a platform, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a cider-press, the combination, with the shafts G G, and means, substantially as described for operating the same, of a follower-beam having a follower secured thereto, and a movable platform for supporting the tubs containing the fruitto be operated upon, as set forth.
5. In a cider-press, a movable platform adapted to be turned, substantially as described, when the follower is raised, as set forth. 7
(5. In a cider-press, the combination, with a suitable supportingframe, of the shafts G G, mounted therein, gearing, substantially as described,for operating said shafts,a followerbeain, a follower, a platform loosely connected with one of said shafts, and a clutch, substantially as set forth.

The combination, with a suitable sup porting-frame, of shafts G G, mounted therein, gearing, substantially as described, for op erating said shafts, a follower-beam mounted on said shafts,a follower secured to said beam, a platform having ribs upon its under side, supportingbeams having grooves to receive the same, and a clutch, substantially as set forth.
