Aug. 6, 1963 H. s. BREMBECK BULK FEED BIN BOTTOM 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Sept. 26, 1961 BY m WA7'70ZA/E Y5 INVENTOR. flan 420 5. 5ZEM5ECK United States Patent 3,100,052 BULK FEED BIN BOTTOM Howard Speicher Brembeck, 2808 Martin Manor Drive, Goshen, Ind. Filed Sept. 26, 1961, Ser. No. 140,707 2 Claims. (Cl. 214-17) This invention relates to a bulk feed bin bottom and more particularly to an arrangement for completely exhausting the feed, grain, or other material in the bin from the bottom thereof.
A primary object of the invention is the provision of an improved auger arrangement which, in combination with the shaping of the bin bottom, completely removes all material therefrom, when desired, by the prevention of bridging of the feed over the auger, or clogging from other causes.
A more specific object of the invention resides in the provision of a pivoted auger section attached to a primary discharge auger by means of a universal or other flexible type joint, whereby the primary auger may be arranged in a variety of positions and locations without disturbing the section of the auger which actually does the primary unloading.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a bin bottom so arranged that the section of the auger lying directly beneath the opening in the bottom of the bin is angularly disposed at such an angle as to preclude bridging of the material in the bin, and further to prevent to a large extent the possibility of any clogging.
A further specific object of the invention is the provision of a specially shaped boot or bottom which permits the extended portion of the auger to ride in the bottom at all times even though the primary auger is moved upwardly or downwardly or from side to side.
Still .another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, assemble, and utilize.
Other objects reside in the combinations of elements, arrangements of parts, and features of construction, all as will be more fully pointed out hereinafter and disclosed in the accompanying drawings wherein there are shown preferred embodiments of this inventive concept.
In the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevational view of a bin for feed or the like with the attachment of the instant invention applied to the bottom thereof.
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through the bottom of the bin showing the pivotal connection between the feed discharge auger at the bottom of the bin and the primary discharge auger.
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 3-3 of FIG. 2 as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
FIGURE 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of a constructional detail; and
FIGURE 5 is a view similar to FIG. 1, but partially broken away, disclosing a side draw bin with the instant invention applied thereto.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Having reference now to the drawings in detail, and more particularly to FIG. 1, there is generally indicated at a bin for bulk feed or other similar material provided with a top opening having a closure 11 therefor. The bin 10 is supported on a framework or foundation comprised of a plurality of reinforced uprights 12, and the lower portion thereof terminates in a conical section 13, which is provided with a centrally disposed open- 3,100,052 Patented Aug. 6, 1963 "ice ing 14. The opening 14 terminates in a tapered funnelshaped portion 15, to which is attached a boot 16 of generally U-shaped configuration, and having a bottom 17 which is inclined upwardly toward the discharge opening. Positioned within the boot and extending the full length of the angularly positioned bottom 17 thereof is a discharge auger 18, the extremity of which extends into a discharge tube 19. A discharge tube extension 20 is secured to the tube 19 in any desired manner, as by means of a removable collar 21, the arrangement being such that the relative angle of the tube extension 20 to the bin may be varied through a wide radius in both horizontal and vertical directions. Collar 21 is comprised of two sections 21a and 21b, each of which has an end flange 21c and 21:], respectively, the flanges being diagonally disposed relative to the longitudinal axis of the collar, whereby rotation of the sections relative to each other varies the angular relation of tube extension 20 relative to tube 19. The flanges and their associated collar sections are secured in a desired position by bolts 21e (see FIGURE 4) extended through aligned openings in the flanges. The tube extension 20 also contains a main discharge auger 22, which extends substantially the full length thereof and includes a shaft 23 which carries a pulley 24 which is driven by a belt 25 from the drive shaft of a conventional electric motor 26 or the like. The central shaft 23 of primary auger 22 is connected by means of a universal or other suitable flexible joint 25 to the shaft of anger 18, so that the auger 18 is driven from the shaft 23 and rotated therewith regardless of the angle of inclination of the tube 20. By virtue of the shape of the boot 16 together with the opening 15 and the relationship of the angular bottom 17 complete evacuation of the internal contents of the bin 10 may be readily provided, since bridging of the feed over the auger is precluded by the spacing of the side wall 16a of boot 16 and the fact that the auger 18 lies in the rounded bottom of the boot, which it is to be noted, is slightly tapered toward the rear of the auger to provide increased space to facilitate passage of the feed toward the discharge end of the spout.
A flow deflector 30 is positioned interiorly of the end wall 17a of boot 16 in such manner as to direct any residual feed from the bin directly onto the auger thus, effectively resulting in the removal of all of the contents of the bin.
A support 31 for tube extension 20' is pivotally connected as at 31a to a lower portion of the bin, and facilitates the positioning of the discharge tube extension 20 if desired. Discharge tube extension 20 has a spout 32 adjacent one end, which may be positioned over or interiorly of any truck, car, or other locality into which it is desired to unload the contents of the bin.
FIGURE 5 shows a slightly modified form of construction wherein the bin is mounted on supporting legs and wherein the lower bottom portion thereof is inclined toward one side, with the bottom opening positioned immediately adjacent one side thereof. In this instance, the boot with its inclined bottom corresponding exactly to the boot 16 and 17 may be rotated about a two part connecting ring 151 so that the discharge tube extension 200 and its associated discharge tube may be directed radially about the outlet as indicated by dotted lines, as well as varied in angular relation by means of the adjusting collar 210*.
In all other respects the interior arrangement of the discharge tube extension 200 and the boot 160 are substantially identical to the discharge tube extension 20 and boot 16 previously described.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved bottom for feed bins or the like which accomplishes all the objects of this invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative, and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
1. In a bulk b-in having a conical bottom with an outlook therein, a boot depending beneath said outlet, said boot having an upwardly inclined substantially U-shaped bottom, a discharge auger extending along said inclined bottom, an inclined discharge tube for said boot at the uppermost end of said inclined bottom, a discharge extension, a two part collar connecting said discharge tube to said discharge extension, each of said two parts having a flange inclined relative to the longitudinal axis of the collar, whereby rotation of one part relative to the other varies the angular inclination of said discharge extension relative to said discharge tube, bolts extended through aligned openings in said flanges fixedly securing said parts in a selected position of adjustment, 2 primary anger in said discharge extension, a universal connection between said discharge auger and said primary auger, and means carried by said discharge extension for rotating said primary and hence said discharge angers.
2. The construction of claim 1 wherein said boot is rotatably connected to said conical bottom of said bin for varying the direction of radial extension of said discharge extension.
