7 UNITED STATES PATENT Grrrcn.
RICHARD D. THAOKSTON, OF ST; LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HENRY I. COE, OF SAME PLACE.
SELF- CLOSING HATCHWAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,994, dated December 30, 1884.
Application filed May 31, 1884. (No modelJ T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD D. THACK: STON, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Self -Closing Hatchways, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the cage and a section of the floor taken on line 1 1, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the shafts and its boxes. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of the corner of one of the doors, showing the shaft G in transverse section.
This invention relates to an improvement in Letters Patent of the United States No. 274,844, granted to me March 27, 1883.
This invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, A represents part of a floor of a building, B B the uprights of the elevator, and G the hatchway. The
hatchway is provided with doors D I), secured to vertical shafts G, which have eccentric gudgeons H 011 their ends fitting in boxes I,
referred to.
are forced open, these shafts allow them to be opened on a slight incline, so that they will close by gravity.
E E are cams secured to the top of the cage E, to open the doors on the ascent of the cage, and E E" are cams secured to the bottom of the cage. The doors are provided with friction-ro1lers F F, (see Fig. 3,) against which the cams strike and bear in opening the doors, and in fast-running elevators these rollers may have springs placed behind them, if desired.
For a full description of the operation of this door reference is made to my patent above By opening the door or doors on an incline it or they will close by gravity without the assistance of a spring or other power.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a self-closing hatchway, a door pivoted at one corner and adapted to be swung open in an inclined plane, as set forth.
2. In a self-closing hatchway, a door secured at one corner to ashaft having eccentric gudgeons journaled in suitable bearings, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
