No. 203,560 4 Claims. (Cl. 315-66) The invention relates to ironer roll covers, and more particularly to novel and improved fastening means for holding such covers on lthe ironer rolls.
As is well known to those familiar with mechanized apparatus for ironing flatwork laundry articles, a cylindrical metal ironing roll is normally provided with an encasing cover which may include a backing member attached to the roll, a resilient or compressible padding carried on, and usually retained by, the backing member, and nally an outer cover cloth which, when in operation, contacts the workpiece. The work-piece travels between the cover cloth and the cooperating ironing member or chest, as it is usually called.
The resilient or compressible padding is normally provided with a full width attaching strip, known as a leader by means of which the leading edge of the padding is secured to the roll, or to some sort of a base which `also may have some resiliency. After the leader is attached the padding may thereupon be Wound around the ironer roll as in a spirally wound bandage, the padding being cut off after one, two, or more turns, depending on the requirements of the situation or the judgment of the particular operator in the light of his experience lwith the ironed output from the particular assembly. The trailing end of the padding is usually left unattached, to permit the spiral roll to be self-adjusting in operation. The final cloth cover may be applied in any suitable way, its arrangement fornn'ng no part of the present invention.
In the past the leader has sometimes been attached to the roll, or to a backing member fixed to the roll, by means of adhesive. In other arrangements various mechanical expedients have been devised for the same purpose. As far as is known to me none of the arrangements for retaining the padding have been completely satisfactory.
An object of the present invention is to provide novel and improved means retaining the padding on an ironer roll.
A further object of the present invention is to provide positive mechanical interlocking means which can be attached more readily and rapidly than any mechanical device previously available.
A `further object of the invention is to provide, in cornbination, a xed base having apertures therethrough, and clip means having portions passing through the leader and through said perforations whereby the leader is retained on the base.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from a study of the following specification, in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Proceeding iirst to a discussion of the embodiment shown in FIGS. l, 2 and 3, there is shown a driven roll 10 and an associated chest 11. The roll in this embodiment is provided with a wire mesh backing or supporting base 12. This wire mesh could be positioned directly on the surface of roll 10 although I show it here as attached, for example by welding, to supporting strips 13 circumferentially carried on and fixed to the roll periphery.
The padding 14 has a leader or attaching strip 15 which is .-laid upon the Wire mesh backing, as best shown in FIGS. l and 3, and in plan view in FIG. 2, and is rapidly attached by clips 16. They have a main body portion 16a which is resilient enough to be conformed to the general curvature of the roll as shown in the transition from the idle position in broken line in FIG. 3 to the operating position in full line in the same gure. Clip 116 has legs 16b and 16e, which in turn have respective toes 16d and 16e. -In applying the clip the toe 16d is inserted underneath a transverse wire of the mesh adjacent to the edge of the leader, or just in front of the edge of the leader as shown in FIG. 3. The clip is then bowed or exed slightly and the toe 16e is pushed through the -leader and slipped under another transverse wire of the screen 12. It thereupon snaps into the final position shown in FIG. 2. The offset amount of legs 16h, y16C, and toes 16a', 16e is proportioned so that the clip fastener presses snugly down along its length on the fabric leader so as to provide a secure grip. The exact shapes of legs and toes, as illustrated, are not critical, and other offset or hooked contours could be devised. The clip I show is made Ifrom spring wire, and l have found it very satisfactory. The leader may be first punctured to receive one or both ends of the clip, and the clip toes may be of different lengths as shown, it being more convenient to insert the longer toe iirst. A number of clips can be spaced across the width of the leader as indicated in the fragmentary plan view of FIG. 2.
A hollow shaft 17 which drives the roll may be connected with a vacuum pump, to accommodate the roll for suction and the roll periphery may be perforated, as indicated at 1S (FIGS. 3 and 5) so that vapors may be withdrawn through the padding so as to keep it dry. As heretofore indicated, the padding y14 is wound on the roll in sprial fashion, in a bandage-type wrapping, the trailing end 14a being left unattached as shown in FIG. l. Also as hereinabove previously indicated, an outer cover cloth 18 may also be wound around the roll on top of the padding. The end 13a of the cover cloth may likewise remain unattached since it will remain in place without wrinkling as long as the roll rotates in the proper direction.
In FIGS. 4 and 5 I show a backing or supporting base 19 for the padding which base is formed from a metal sheet having a plurality of perforations 20. This base is of sheath-like character, and can be secured to circumferential strips or beads 21 which can be secured to the roll as in the case of the strips 13 of FIGS. 1 to 3. In the embodiment of FIGS. 4 and 5 each of the clips 16 has one end passing through the leader 22 and into a perforation 2t) and the other end overhan-ging the leader and Iinserted in another perforation 2.0.
It can be readily seen that clips 16 can be attached quite rapidly, avoiding the previously known methods of glueing, lacing, etc., and, if desired the clips may be removed equally rapidly to facilitate repair or replacement of the padding.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination, ironing roll cover means and retaining means for the same including a backing member surrounding and fixed to said roll, a padding member superimposed on said backing member, said padding member being provided with an attaching member which overlies said backing member in the direction of the roll axis, and `an elongated clip for aihxing said Iattaching member to the backing member, said clip having end portions having a manually operatable interlock with said backing member.
2. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said backing means is provided with a plurality of apertures adapted to receive said clip end portions.
3. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said clip is formed from spring Wire having opposed end portions, one said end portion extending through said attaching member land then into interlocked relationship with said back-ing member, and the other said end portion extending beyond the edge of said attaching member and then into interlocked relationship lWith said backing member.

Claims (1)

1. IN COMBINATION, IRONING ROLL COVER MEANS AND RETAINING MEANS FOR THE SAME INCLUDING A BACKING MEMBER SURROUNDING AND FIXED TO SAID ROLL, A PADDING MEMBER SUPERIMPOSED ON SAID BACKING MEMBER, SAID PADDING MEMBER BEING PROVIDED WITH AN ATTACHING MEMBER WHICH OVERLIES SAID BACKING MEMBER IN THE DIRECTION OF THE ROLL AXIS, AND AN ELONGATED CLIP FOR AFFIXING SAID ATTACHING MEMBER TO THE BACKING MEMBER, SAID CLIP HAVING END PORTIONS HAVING A MANUALLY OPERATABLE INTERLOCK WITH SAID BACKING MEMBER.
