United States Patent O 3,099,232 SLIDE ASSEMBLY FOR EXTENfiION TABLES Joseph Cooper, 108-33 67th Ave, Forest Hills, NY. Filed Oct. 23, 1961, Ser. No. 146,740 1 Claim. (*Cl. 108-83) The present invention relates to slides on which are affixed opposed leaves of a table which can be brought into abutment when the table is of minor width, and which may be moved apart for the insertion of one or more central leaves when greater Width of the table surface is desired. Only two spaced slide assemblies are required in the use of the present invention, and each assembly consis-ts of only two interfitting elements which relatively slide. Each of said interfitting slide sections of the assembly is such that in their movement surfaces thereof do not rub against the under surfaces of the table top members, by the fact that the end area of each slide section, of the assembly of two sections, which is fixed to an appropriate table top member, continues with a projected area having a relatively depressed top, and, when the interfitting slide sections are extended by movement of the opposed table top members apart, for the insertion of a central leaf or leaves, roller means carried by the said projected slide sections come into position at the table center opening which receives the central leaf or leaves and the said projected areas of each of the spaced slide assemblies support the same in the same plane as that of the opposed table top members. When the central leaf or leaves are removed and the slide sections retracted the roller means are brought under one or both of the table top members.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing in dotted lines opposed table top members, with supporting legs and for positioning [at the under surface thereof two spaced interfitting slide members in accordance with the invention.
FIG. 2 is a schematic side view showing one of the interfitting slide members contracted and the opposed table top members in abutment.
FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 2 showing the assembly extended, but not to full extended position.
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 2 showing the interfi-tting slide members extended to a greater degree, a central leaf having been brought into position.
FIG. 5 is an enlarged view in side elevation and partly broken away, showing the elements illustrated in FIG. 2.
FIG. 6 is a vertical section on the line 6-6, FIG. 5.
FIG. 7 is a schematic view showing two central leaves non-supported by the rollers and hence they are shown dropped out of line with the table top member.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown in FIG. 1, by dotted lines, a table structure in which the opposed table top members 1 and 2, supported by legs 3 may be moved apart for the insertion of a central leaf. Underlying the opposed table top members 1 and 2 are shown two spaced interfitting and sliding assemblies of slide members, one member for each assembly being designated A and the second member being designated B. Reference to FIG. 6 will best show the construction. Although the material used for the slide sections preferably is metal, any suitable material such as wood or plastic, for example, may be employed. The embodiment shown is an example only as to form.
Referring again to the embodiment illustrated in the drawing, along its line of attachment to an appropriate table top member the appropriate section of each assembly is formed with a line upwardly directed and apertured integral buttons 4 and which may be of any suitable number. Screws '5 pass through the buttons and i l lQ the ice table top members so that the slides, as to each member thereof, provide firm attachment at one end to an appropriate table top member, but without attachment to the opposite table top member, and free to slide without rubbing against the table top member. When wood or plastic material is used and also in the case of metal, the buttons may be eliminated and the top of one area raised relatively to the opposite area.
One end area of the slide section B carries roller means consisting of the rollers 7. At the lower base of the table top members 1 and 2, these rollers project upwardly to the height of the opposite end areas which are to be attached to table top members. When the interfitting slide sections are moved apart for insertion of a central leaf or leaves the rollers move to the gap between the table top members for support of the central leaf or leaves as shown in FIG. 4, so that the central leaf or leaves are held on the same plane as that of the opposed table top members 1 and 2.
In the embodiment illustrated each slide section A is formed with a horizontal fiange at 9, FIG. 6, which flange at the area for its attachment to a table top member is upset at spaced points, and apertured to form the integral buttons 4. Each flange carries an elongated clip-like member 10 received within an elongated clip embracing member 11 which carries the roller means 7, which may comprise :one or a plurality of rollers as desired. Also the abutting edges of the table top members, as well as any inserted extension leaf or leaves, such as indicated at 10 FIGS. 4 and 5, the latter showing two extension leaves, may be formed with sockets and carry dowel pins, the latter being indicated at 12 in the drawings.
It will be understood that various modifications may be made in the form and arrangement of the elements illustrated in the drawings without departing from the spirit of the invention recited in the claims forming part of the specification. Thus, with reference to FIG. 6, the rollers 7 may be directly carried by the element 11, if desired. With reference to FIG. 7, the sliding elements may be considered as of wood, plastic, metal or other suitable material, and the sections of each assembly connected for mutual sliding action by any suitable means, in substitution of that shown in the preceding figures of the drawings. Of course, the roller means will be applied, although not shown in FIG. 7, because the figure is intended to exem plify the general utility of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
In a table having opposed leaves movable with their supports to provide a gap at the top of the table, the leaves facing the gap being a first and a second leaf, the combination of a pair of spaced slide bars carried by each of said first and second leaves in the normal direction of movement thereof and including means for slidingly interfitting the bars of the first leaf with those of the second leaf, the bars being of such length as to remain interfitted as supporting elements for a third leaf when the first and second leaves are moved apart a substantial distance equivalent to the width of such third leaf, and a roller carried by one slide bar of each of said interfitting spaced sets of slide bars, each roller being positioned perpendicular to the first and second leaves and bodily moving with the slide bar which carries it from under its appropriate first or second leaf to said gap between the leaves and with its top surfiace substantially level with said leaf.
